Levels of Cognitive Congruence between Managers and Team Members' Perceptions of Cooperation at Work

    Get PDF
Much of the research on the psychological dynamics of performance teams suffers from the following limitations: consideration of only one theoretical framework and analysis of just one perspective (e.g., manager-coach or team member). To address these shortcomings, this study used a Global Cooperation concept that synthesized five psychological frameworks: coordination, cohesion, cooperation, integration, and identification. The objective of this study was to examine the level of congruence-symmetry between the two perspectives and the tendency for managers-coaches and team members to reduce cognitive dissonance in the perception of global cooperation. To this end, 108 managers-coaches and members of performance teams were studied (range: 23−60 years old) using a Cooperative Workteam Questionnaire (CWQ). Results revealed that the greatest amount of asymmetry was observed in Global Cooperation and Emotional Cooperation, while less asymmetry was found in Personal Growth, and good congruence-fit in Conditioned Cooperation. Results are discussed in terms of their theoretical meaning and practical implications for interventions on performance teams

Dislocated workers from four Minnesota industries--manufacturing, mining, lumber, and agriculture--were interviewed about their job goals, plans for retraining, and needs for improved basic skills in reading and mathematics. This report includes policy recommendations as to what unions, companies, government, and educational institutions can do to aid dislocated workers. A summary of the study appeared in the June 1988 CURA Reporter.A project of the Interactive Research Grants Program, Center for Urban and Regional Affairs and the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs, University of Minnesota

The Importance of Time Congruity in the Organisation.

    Get PDF
In 1991 Kaufman, Lane, and Lindquist proposed that time congruity in terms of an individual's time preferences and the time use methods of an organisation would lead to satisfactory performance and enhancement of quality of work and general life. The research reported here presents a study which uses commensurate person and job measures of time personality in an organisational setting to assess the effects of time congruity on one aspect of work life, job-related affective well-being. Results show that time personality and time congruity were found to have direct effects on well-being and the influence of time congruity was found to be mediated through time personality, thus contributing to the person–job (P–J) fit literature which suggests that direct effects are often more important than indirect effects. The study also provides some practical examples of ways to address some of the previously cited methodological issues in P–J fit research
