    Poly[di-Îź-glycinato-copper(II)]: a two-dimensional coordination polymer

    The title coordination polymer, [Cu(C2H4NO2)2]n, is two-dimensional and consists of a distorted octa­hedral copper coordination polyhedron with two bidentate glycine ligands chelating the metal through the O and N atoms in a trans-square-planar configuration. The two axial coordination sites are occupied by carbonyl O atoms of neighbouring glycine mol­ecules. The Cu—O distances for the axial O atoms [2.648 (2) and 2.837 (2) Å] are considerably longer than both the Cu—O [1.9475 (17) and 1.9483 (18) Å] and Cu—N [1.988 (2) and 1.948 (2) Å] distances in the equatorial plane, which indicates a strong Jahn–Teller effect. In the crystal, the two-dimensional networks are arranged parallel to (001) and are linked via N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional arrangement

    Restorative sleep predicts the resolution of chronic widespread pain: results from the EPIFUND study

Conversely, good-quality sleep may play a role in the resolution of pain symptoms. Sleep is a multidimensional construct, comprising a number of diverse components. The aims of the current study were to examine the hypotheses that: (i) good sleep quality would predict the resolution of CWP, (ii) restorative sleep would predict the resolution of CWP and (iii) that these relationships would be independent of confounding psychological factors. METHODS: Subjects in a population-based prospective study completed a pain questionnaire at baseline from which subjects with CWP were identified. Baseline sleep was measured using the Estimation of Sleep Problems Scale which measures sleep onset, maintenance, early wakening and restorative sleep. The questionnaire also contained scales examining psychosocial status. Subjects were followed up 15 months later and pain status was assessed. RESULTS: A total of 1061 subjects reported CWP at baseline of whom 679 (75% of eligible subjects) responded at follow-up. Of those, a total of 300 (44%) no longer satisfied criteria for CWP. Univariate analysis revealed that three of the four sleep components were associated with the resolution of CWP: rapid sleep onset, odds ratio (OR) = 1.7, 95% CI 1.2, 2.5; absence of early wakening, OR = 1.6, 95% CI 1.1, 2.4; and restorative sleep, OR = 2.7, 95% CI 1.5, 4.8. After adjusting for the effect of psychosocial factors, which may have confounded the relationship, only restorative sleep (OR = 2.0, 95% CI 1.02, 3.8) was associated.     Thermal and electrical conductivity of iron at Earth's core conditions

    The Earth acts as a gigantic heat engine driven by decay of radiogenic isotopes and slow cooling, which gives rise to plate tectonics, volcanoes, and mountain building. Another key product is the geomagnetic field, generated in the liquid iron core by a dynamo running on heat released by cooling and freezing to grow the solid inner core, and on chemical convection due to light elements expelled from the liquid on freezing. The power supplied to the geodynamo, measured by the heat-flux across the core-mantle boundary (CMB), places constraints on Earth's evolution. Estimates of CMB heat-flux depend on properties of iron mixtures under the extreme pressure and temperature conditions in the core, most critically on the thermal and electrical conductivities. These quantities remain poorly known because of inherent difficulties in experimentation and theory. Here we use density functional theory to compute these conductivities in liquid iron mixtures at core conditions from first principles- the first directly computed values that do not rely on estimates based on extrapolations. The mixtures of Fe, O, S, and Si are taken from earlier work and fit the seismologically-determined core density and inner-core boundary density jump. We find both conductivities to be 2-3 times higher than estimates in current use. The changes are so large that core thermal histories and power requirements must be reassessed. New estimates of adiabatic heat-flux give 15-16 TW at the CMB, higher than present estimates of CMB heat-flux based on mantle convection; the top of the core must be thermally stratified and any convection in the upper core driven by chemical convection against the adverse thermal buoyancy or lateral variations in CMB heat flow. Power for the geodynamo is greatly restricted and future models of mantle evolution must incorporate a high CMB heat-flux and explain recent formation of the inner core.Comment: 11 pages including supplementary information, two figures.     INTRODUCTION: Asthma is now one of the most common long-term conditions in the UK. It is therefore important to develop a comprehensive appreciation of the healthcare and societal costs in order to inform decisions on care provision and planning. We plan to build on our earlier estimates of national prevalence and costs from asthma by filling the data gaps previously identified in relation to healthcare and broadening the field of enquiry to include societal costs. This work will provide the first UK-wide estimates of the costs of asthma. In the context of asthma for the UK and its member countries (ie, England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales), we seek to: (1) produce a detailed overview of estimates of incidence, prevalence and healthcare utilisation; (2) estimate health and societal costs; (3) identify any remaining information gaps and explore the feasibility of filling these and (4) provide insights into future research that has the potential to inform changes in policy leading to the provision of more cost-effective care. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Secondary analyses of data from national health surveys, primary care, prescribing, emergency care, hospital, mortality and administrative data sources will be undertaken to estimate prevalence, healthcare utilisation and outcomes from asthma. Data linkages and economic modelling will be undertaken in an attempt to populate data gaps and estimate costs. Separate prevalence and cost estimates will be calculated for each of the UK-member countries and these will then be aggregated to generate UK-wide estimates. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Approvals have been obtained from the NHS Scotland Information Services Division's Privacy Advisory Committee, the Secure Anonymised Information Linkage Collaboration Review System, the NHS South-East Scotland Research Ethics Service and The University of Edinburgh's Centre for Population Health Sciences Research Ethics Committee. We will produce a report for Asthma-UK, submit papers to peer-reviewed journals and construct an interactive map

    Stellar kinematics and populations out to 1.5 effective radius in the elliptical galaxy NGC4636

    We present high quality long slit spectra along the major and minor axes out to 1.5 effective radius (ReR_e) of the massive galaxy NGC4636 taken by Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET). Using Fourier Correlation Quotient (FCQ) method, we measured the stellar line-of-sight velocity distribution along the axes. Furthermore, six Lick/IDS indices (Hβ,Mgb,Fe5015,Fe5270,Fe5335,Fe5406H\beta,Mgb,Fe_{5015},Fe_{5270},Fe_{5335},Fe_{5406}) are derived from the clean spectrum. By comparing the measured absorption line strengths with the predictions of Simple Stellar Populations (SSP) models, we derived ages, total metallicity and ι\alpha abundance profiles of the galaxy. This galaxy presents old and [ι/Fe][\alpha/Fe] over abundant stellar populations. Indeed, using the SSP model, we obtained the broadband color profiles. The theoretical colors match well with the measured colors and present red sharp peaks at the galaxy center. The sharp peaks of the colors are mainly shaped by the high metallicity in the galaxy center. Interestingly, the galaxy has steep negative metallicity gradients, but trend flattens outwards. This result likly suggests that the center and outer regions of the galaxy formed through different formation process.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, accepted by RA

    Influx of Calcium through L-type Calcium Channels in Early Postnatal Regulation of Chloride Transporters in the Rat Hippocampus

    During the early postnatal period, GABAB receptor activation facilitates L-type calcium current in rat hippocampus. One developmental process that L-type current may regulate is the change in expression of the K+Cl− co-transporter (KCC2) and N+K+2Cl− co-transporter (NKCC1), which are involved in the maturation of the GABAergic system. The present study investigated the connection between L-type current, GABAB receptors, and expression of chloride transporters during development. The facilitation of L-type current by GABAB receptors is more prominent in the second week of development, with the highest percentage of cells exhibiting facilitation in cultures isolated from 7 day old rats (37.5%). The protein levels of KCC2 and NKCC1 were investigated to determine the developmental timecourse of expression as well as expression following treatment with an L-type channel antagonist and a GABAB receptor agonist. The time course of both chloride transporters in culture mimics that seen in hippocampal tissue isolated from various ages. KCC2 levels increased drastically in the first two postnatal weeks while NKCC1 remained relatively stable, suggesting that the ratio of the chloride transporters is important in mediating the developmental change in chloride reversal potential. Treatment of cultures with the L-type antagonist nimodipine did not affect protein levels of NKCC1, but significantly decreased the upregulation of KCC2 during the first postnatal week. In addition, calcium current facilitation occurs slightly before the large increase in KCC2 expression. These results suggest that the expression of KCC2 is regulated by calcium influx through L-type channels in the early postnatal period in hippocampal neurons

    WALLABY Early Science - I. The NGC 7162 Galaxy Group

    We present Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind Survey (WALLABY) early science results from the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) observations of the NGC 7162 galaxy group. We use archival HIPASS and Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) observations of this group to validate the new ASKAP data and the data reduction pipeline ASKAPsoft. We detect six galaxies in the neutral hydrogen (HI) 21-cm line, expanding the NGC 7162 group membership from four to seven galaxies. Two of the new detections are also the first HI detections of the dwarf galaxies, AM 2159-434 and GALEXASC J220338.65-431128.7, for which we have measured velocities of cz=2558cz=2558 and cz=2727cz=2727 km s−1^{-1}, respectively. We confirm that there is extended HI emission around NGC 7162 possibly due to past interactions in the group as indicated by the 40∘40^{\circ} offset between the kinematic and morphological major axes for NGC 7162A, and its HI richness. Taking advantage of the increased resolution (factor of ∼1.5\sim1.5) of the ASKAP data over archival ATCA observations, we fit a tilted ring model and use envelope tracing to determine the galaxies' rotation curves. Using these we estimate the dynamical masses and find, as expected, high dark matter fractions of fDM∼0.81−0.95f_{\mathrm{DM}}\sim0.81-0.95 for all group members.     Asteroseismology of three evolved stars in M67:testing systematic biases in seismic masses and ages

    Asteroseismology can precisely characterize stars, but the accuracy of seismic inference is still an open question. In this work, we use three evolved stars, including one late subgiant (EPIC 211411922) and two young red giants (EPIC 211409560 and EPIC 211416749) in the open cluster M67 to validate seismic inferences of stellar mass and age. We start by measuring oscillation mode frequencies and identifying acoustic and mixed modes in all three stars. We then fit the stars to determine their masses and ages with a detailed modelling approach. Our age estimates for all stars agree well with the literature consensus age range of M67 (3.0-5.0 Gyr). Mass estimates for EPIC 211411922 and EPIC 211409560 are sensible because they are slightly higher than the typical turn-off mass of the cluster. The inferred mass for EPIC 211416749 is underestimated by 5-10 per cent compared with the turn-off mass, but this could be caused by poor data quality. Our results indicate that the detailed modelling can determine sensible masses and ages for evolved stars near the base of the red giant branch

    Digital PCR analysis of circulating tumor DNA: a biomarker for chondrosarcoma diagnosis, prognostication, and residual disease detection

    Conventional chondrosarcoma is the most common primary bone tumor in adults. Prognosis corresponds with tumor grade but remains variable, especially for individuals with grade (G) II disease. There are currently no biomarkers available for monitoring or prognostication of chondrosarcoma. Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) has recently emerged as a promising biomarker for a broad range of tumor types. To date, little has been done to study the presence of ctDNA and its potential utility in the management of sarcomas, including chondrosarcoma. In this study, we have assessed ctDNA levels in a cohort of 71 patients, 32 with sarcoma, including 29 individuals with central chondrosarcoma (CS) and 39 with locally aggressive and benign bone and soft tissue tumors, using digital PCR. In patients with CS, ctDNA was detected in pretreatment samples in 14/29 patients, which showed clear correlation with tumor grade as demonstrated by the detection of ctDNA in all patients with GIII and dedifferentiated disease (n = 6) and in 8/17 patients with GII disease, but never associated with GI CS. Notably detection of ctDNA preoperatively in GII disease was associated with a poor outcome. A total of 14 patients with CS had ctDNA levels assessed at multiple time points and in most patients there was a clear reduction following surgical removal. This research lays the foundation for larger studies to assess the utility of ctDNA for chondrosarcoma diagnosis, prognostication, early detection of residual disease and monitoring disease progression

    LETSGO: A spacecraft-based mission to accurately measure the solar angular momentum with frame-dragging

    LETSGO (LEnse-Thirring Sun-Geo Orbiter) is a proposed space-based mission involving the use of a spacecraft moving along a highly eccentric heliocentric orbit perpendicular to the ecliptic. It aims to accurately measure some important physical properties of the Sun and to test some post-Newtonian features of its gravitational field by continuously monitoring the Earth-probe range. Preliminary sensitivity analyses show that, by assuming a cm-level accuracy in ranging to the spacecraft, it would be possible to detect, in principle, the Lense-Thirring effect on it at a 10^-3-10^-4 level over a timescale of 2 yr, while the larger Schwarzschild component of the solar gravitational field may be sensed with a relative accuracy of about 10^-8-10^-9 during the same temporal interval. The competing range perturbation due to the non-sphericity of the Sun would be a source of systematic error, but it turns out that all the three dynamical features of motion examined affect the Earth-probe range in different ways, allowing for a separation in data analyses. The high eccentricity would help in reducing the impact of the non-gravitational perturbations whose impact would certainly be severe when LETSGO would approach the Sun at just a few solar radii. Further studies should be devoted to investigate both the consequences of the non-conservative forces and the actual measurability of the effects of interest by means of extensive numerical data simulations, parameter estimations and covariance analyses.
