Resistive communications based on neuristors
Memristors are passive elements that allow us to store information using a
single element per bit. However, this is not the only utility of the memristor.
Considering the physical chemical structure of the element used, the memristor
can function at the same time as memory and as a communication unit. This paper
presents a new approach to the use of the memristor and develops the concept of
resistive communication
Multi-agent system for selecting images based on the gender and age
This paper presents a multi-agent system that is able to search people on a database of images recognizing patterns of facial features on each person, based on the main features of the face (eyes, nose and mouth). Using that multi-agent architecture, the system can do the work faster applying Fisherfaces algorithm for the face recognition and classification. This technology can be used for several purposes like specific ads in each user group to suit better their interests or search for the age and gender of people that usually go to different places like malls or shops
Evaluation of Alternative Refractory Materials for the Main Flame Deflectors at KSC Launch Complexes
The deterioration of the refractory materials used to protect the KSC launch complex steel base structures from the high temperatures during launches results in frequent and costly repairs and safety hazards. KSC-SPEC-P-0012, Specification for Refractory Concrete, is ineffective in qualifying refractory materials. This study of the specification and of alternative refractory materials recommends a complete revision of the specification and further investigation of materials that were found to withstand the environment of the Solid Rocket Booster main flame deflector better than the refractory materials in current use in terms of compressive strength, tensile strength, modulus of rupture, shrinkage, and abrasion

Deducing signaling pathways from parallel actions of arsenite and antimonite in human epidermal keratinocytes.
Inorganic arsenic oxides have been identified as carcinogens in several human tissues, including epidermis. Due to the chemical similarity between trivalent inorganic arsenic (arsenite) and antimony (antimonite), we hypothesized that common intracellular targets lead to similarities in cellular responses. Indeed, transcriptional and proteomic profiling revealed remarkable similarities in differentially expressed genes and proteins resulting from exposure of cultured human epidermal keratinocytes to arsenite and antimonite in contrast to comparisons of arsenite with other metal compounds. These data were analyzed to predict upstream regulators and affected signaling pathways following arsenite and antimonite treatments. A majority of the top findings in each category were identical after treatment with either compound. Inspection of the predicted upstream regulators led to previously unsuspected roles for oncostatin M, corticosteroids and ephrins in mediating cellular response. The influence of these predicted mediators was then experimentally verified. Together with predictions of transcription factor effects more generally, the analysis has led to model signaling networks largely accounting for arsenite and antimonite action. The striking parallels between responses to arsenite and antimonite indicate the skin carcinogenic risk of exposure to antimonite merits close scrutiny
CASE STUDY OF AN ACCIDENTAL ANKLE TWIST: A KINEMATIC ANALYSIS USING FUNCTIONAL DATA ANALYSIS
This study examined an accidental ankle twist occurring during a single-participant study of the effects of traction on ankle biomechanics. One male participant performed a series of randomly distributed side-cuts and turns. In the 11th trial, the participant twisted his ankle during a side-cut. As no injury occurred, another 24 side-cut trials were recorded. Functional Data Analysis (FDA) demonstrated that the ankle twist trial was characterised by a sudden increase in inversion and internal rotation along with rapid transition from plantarflexion to dorsiflexion. Velocities showed a two-step increase in internal rotation and inversion, exceeding a 300 °/s safety threshold. The shift to dorsiflexion is indicative of an unloading mechanism that likely prevented the injury. FDA revealed variations between the ankle twist and the control that could inform stud design to prevent injuries
Vision-based techniques for automatic marine plankton classification
Plankton are an important component of life on Earth. Since the 19th century, scientists have attempted to quantify species distributions using many techniques, such as direct counting, sizing, and classification with microscopes. Since then, extraordinary work has been performed regarding the development of plankton imaging systems, producing a massive backlog of images that await classification. Automatic image processing and classification approaches are opening new avenues for avoiding time-consuming manual procedures. While some algorithms have been adapted from many other applications for use with plankton, other exciting techniques have been developed exclusively for this issue. Achieving higher accuracy than that of human taxonomists is not yet possible, but an expeditious analysis is essential for discovering the world beyond plankton. Recent studies have shown the imminent development of real-time, in situ plankton image classification systems, which have only been slowed down by the complex implementations of algorithms on low-power processing hardware. This article compiles the techniques that have been proposed for classifying marine plankton, focusing on automatic methods that utilize image processing, from the beginnings of this field to the present day.Funding for open access charge: Universidad de Málaga / CBUA.
