Size and emission wavelength control of InAs/InP quantum wires

    Get PDF
For a certain heteroepitaxial system, the optical properties of self-assembled nanostructures basically depend on their size. In this work, we have studied different ways to modify the height of InAs/InP quantum wires (QWrs) in order to change the photoluminescence emission wavelength. One procedure consists of changing the QWr size by varying the amount of InAs deposited. The other two methods explored rely on the control of As/P exchange process, in one case during growth of InAs on InP for QWr formation and in the other case during growth of InP on InAs for QWr capping. The combination of the three approaches provides a fine tuning of QWr emission wavelength between 1.2 and 1.9 μm at room [email protected]

Hybrid analog-digital processing system for amplitude-monopulse RSSI-based MiMo wifi direction-of-arrival estimation

    Get PDF
We present a cost-effective hybrid analog digital system to estimate the Direction of Arrival (DoA) of WiFi signals. The processing in the analog domain is based on simple wellknown RADAR amplitude monopulse antenna techniques. Then, using the RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) delivered by commercial MiMo WiFi cards, the DoA is estimated using the socalled digital monopulse function. Due to the hybrid analog digital architecture, the digital processing is extremely simple, so that DoA estimation is performed without using IQ data from specific hardware. The simplicity and robustness of the proposed hybrid analog digital MiMo architecture is demonstrated for the ISM 2.45GHz WiFi band. Also, the limitations with respect to multipath effects are studied in detail. As a proof of concept, an array of two MiMo WiFi DoA monopulse readers are distributed to localize the two-dimensional position of WiFi devices. This costeffective hybrid solution can be applied to all WiFi standards and other IoT narrowband radio protocols, such us Bluetooth Low Energy or Zigbee. This work was supported in part by the Spanish National Projects TEC2016-75934-C4-4-R, TEC2016-76465-C2-1-R and in part by Regional Seneca Project 19494/PI/14

The effect of substrate on high-temperature annealing of GaN epilayers: Si versus sapphire

    Get PDF
We have studied the effects of rapid thermal annealing at 1300¿°C on GaN epilayers grown on AlN buffered Si(111) and on sapphire substrates. After annealing, the epilayers grown on Si display visible alterations with craterlike morphology scattered over the surface. The annealed GaN/Si layers were characterized by a range of experimental techniques: scanning electron microscopy, optical confocal imaging, energy dispersive x-ray microanalysis, Raman scattering, and cathodoluminescence. A substantial Si migration to the GaN epilayer was observed in the crater regions, where decomposition of GaN and formation of Si3N4 crystallites as well as metallic Ga droplets and Si nanocrystals have occurred. The average diameter of the Si nanocrystals was estimated from Raman scattering to be around 3¿nm. Such annealing effects, which are not observed in GaN grown on sapphire, are a significant issue for applications of GaN grown on Si(111) substrates when subsequent high-temperature processing is required

Atención integral a la mujer con cardiopatía isquémica tras el alta hospitalaria

    Get PDF
Nowadays, in spite of the preventive campaigns that have been made in order to control heart risk factors, heart diseasesare the first cause of mortality in the world in both men and women. Moreover, the consequences of these pathologies are usually assessed by using quantitative parameters such as the mortality or morbidity rate, the economic cost or impact which they generate, etc. Although it is clearly evident that we need to use qualitative control instruments which help us understand how people sense the disease. This view would facilitate an improvement of the assistance given and of the approach which is givento these pathologies. As for the heart disease in women, there have been some differences in aspects like the therapeutic effort or the diagnosis. The point which motivates this research is the following one: What happens after the discharge from hospital? What kind of assistance does the Health System offer to a woman who has suffered a heart attack and has been discharged from hospital? What kind of possibilities does our Health System offer to patients once they have been discharged from hospital? Or what"s more, Are the different psychological, social, cultural and physical spheres to which the patient must 'return' being considered? This text p roposes the introduction of a comprehensive assistance programme for women with ischaemic heart disease after they have been discharged from hospital and tries to meet the necessities which can be generated after the assistance process in all the individual spheres in order to guarantee the assistance care as far the holistic point of view is concerned

Custom IMU-Based Wearable System for Robust 2.4 GHz Wireless Human Body Parts Orientation Tracking and 3D Movement Visualization on an Avatar

Recent studies confirm the applicability of Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU)-based systems for human motion analysis. Notwithstanding, high-end IMU-based commercial solutions are yet too expensive and complex to democratize their use among a wide range of potential users. Less featured entry-level commercial solutions are being introduced in the market, trying to fill this gap, but still present some limitations that need to be overcome. At the same time, there is a growing number of scientific papers using not commercial, but custom do-it-yourself IMU-based systems in medical and sports applications. Even though these solutions can help to popularize the use of this technology, they have more limited features and the description on how to design and build them from scratch is yet too scarce in the literature. The aim of this work is two-fold: (1) Proving the feasibility of building an affordable custom solution aimed at simultaneous multiple body parts orientation tracking; while providing a detailed bottom-up description of the required hardware, tools, and mathematical operations to estimate and represent 3D movement in real-time. (2) Showing how the introduction of a custom 2.4 GHz communication protocol including a channel hopping strategy can address some of the current communication limitations of entry-level commercial solutions. The proposed system can be used for wireless real-time human body parts orientation tracking with up to 10 custom sensors, at least at 50 Hz. In addition, it provides a more reliable motion data acquisition in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi crowded environments, where the use of entry-level commercial solutions might be unfeasible. This system can be used as a groundwork for developing affordable human motion analysis solutions that do not require an accurate kinematic analysis. This research has been partially funded by a research contract with IVECO Spain SL and by the Department of Employment and Industry of Castilla y León (Spain), under research project ErgoTwyn (INVESTUN/21/VA/0003)

    Get PDF
Introduction: Stigma and mental health literacy play an important role in individuals' trajectories with mental disorders who are often stigmatised and suffer adverse consequences such as social isolation and limited life chances. Stigma towards people with mental disorders can occur in adults but also in adolescents. Objective: We aimed to determine the social stigma towards people with mental disorders in a group of adolescents and to establish any possible relationships with personal variables. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study. A total of 144 adolescents were recruited from a secondary school in Spain by the convenience sampling method and completed a demographic questionnaire and the Community Attitudes toward the Mentally Ill scale. Results: Female adolescents had fewer stigmatising attitudes (p= 0.003). Females and Higher academic year students scored less in the Authoritarianism subscale (p< 0.001 and p= 0.001, respectively). Differences in scores of the Benevolence subscale were found depending on the academic level of the mother (p= 0.013). Discussion: Gender, age and academic year are factors related to social stigma in the adolescent population. Mothers’ academic level is related. Implications to clinical practice: Our results can contribute in focusing anti-stigma interventions in those adolescents with more stigma levels.

Multipactor radiation analysis within a waveguide region based on a frequency-domain representation of the dynamics of charged particles

    Get PDF
A technique for the accurate computation of the electromagnetic fields radiated by a charged particle moving within a parallel-plate waveguide is presented. Based on a transformation of the time-varying current density of the particle into a time-harmonic current density, this technique allows the evaluation of the radiated electromagnetic fields both in the frequency and time domains, as well as in the near- and far-field regions. For this purpose, several accelerated versions of the parallel-plate Green’s function in the frequency domain have been considered. The theory has been successfully applied to the multipactor discharge occurring within a two metal-plates region. The proposed formulation has been tested with a particle-in-cell code based on the finite- difference time-domain method, obtaining good agreement. The authors would like to thank ESA/ESTEC for having funded this research activity through the Contract “RF Breakdown in Multicarrier Systems” ͑Contract No. 19918/06/NL/GLC͒

Different femoral rotation with navigated flexion-gap balanced or measured resection in total knee arthroplasty does not lead to different clinical outcomes

    Get PDF
PURPOSE: Femoral rotation in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is hypothesized to vary in the same knee depending on the method used to establish it. METHODS: Thirty-eight patients who underwent TKA surgery using a measured resection technique (RT) were compared with 40 patients who underwent a flexion-gap balancing technique with computer-assisted (for navigation) surgery (FB-CAS) to assess clinical and radiographic alignment differences at two years postoperatively. In 36 of the 40 patients in the FB-CAS group, both methods were used. Intraoperatively, the transepicondylar femoral rotation (TEFR) in reference to the transepicondylar axis was established as the rotation that balanced the flexion gap. Once the TEFR was obtained, an analogous rotation as measured by a posterior reference femoral rotation (PRFR) cutting guide was determined. RESULTS: Femoral component rotation determined by the TEFR and PRFR methods differed in each of the knees. The median TEFR was 0.08°±0.6° (range -¿1.5°, 1.5°), and the median PRFR was 0.06°±2.8° (range -¿6°, 5°). The mean difference in the rotational alignment between the TEFR and PRFR techniques was 0.01° ± 3.1°. The 95% limits of agreement between the mean differences in measurements were between 6.2° external rotation and -¿6.1° internal rotation. At 2 years postoperatively, we found no differences in the radiographic or clinical American Knee Society score between the two groups. CONCLUSION: Rotation of the femoral component in TKA can vary in the same knee depending on the surgical method used to establish it. This variation in femoral rotation is sufficiently small enough to have no apparent effect on the 2-year clinical outcome score.Postprint (author's final draft

All optical switching of a single photon stream by excitonic depletion

Single semiconductor quantum dots have been extensively used to demonstrate the deterministic emission of high purity single photons. The single photon emission performance of these nanostructures has become very well controlled, offering high levels of photon indistinguishability and brightness. Ultimately, quantum technologies will require the development of a set of devices to manipulate and control the state of the photons. Here we measure and simulate a novel all-optical route to switch the single photon stream emitted from the excitonic transition in a single semiconductor quantum dot. A dual non-resonant excitation pumping scheme is used to engineer a switching device operated with GHz speeds, high differential contrasts, ultra-low power consumption and high single photon purity. Our device scheme can be replicated in many different zero dimensional semiconductors, providing a novel route towards developing a platform-independent on-chip design for high speed and low power consumption quantum devices. Using semiconductor quantum dots as single-photon sources for application to quantum technologies is promising due to the high brightness and photon purity of the emitted light. Here, a method of optically switching their emission based on excitonic depletion is presented
