It is known that every Riesz operator R on a Hilbert space can be written R=Q+C, where C is compact and both Q and CQ-QC are quasinilpotent. This result is extended to a general C*-algebra setting

The utility of curriculum-based measurement within a multitiered framework: establishing cut scores as predictors of student performance on the Alaska standards-based assessment

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between student performance on Reading Curriculum-based Measures (R-CBM) and student performance on the Alaska\u27s standards based assessment (SBA) administered to students in Studied School District (SSD) Grade 3 through Grade 5 students in the Studied School District as required by Alaska\u27s accountability system. The 2 research questions were: (a) To what extent, if at all, is there a relationship between student performance on the R-CBM tools administered in Grades 3, 4, and 5 in the fall, winter, and spring and student performance on the Alaska SBA administered in the spring of the same school year in the SSD? (b) To what extent, if at all, can cut scores be derived for each of the 3 R-CBM testing windows in the fall, winter, and spring that predict success on the Alaska SBA administered in the spring of the same school year in the SSD? The Study School District (SSD) served approximately 9,500 students, with 14% of students eligible for special education services. The enrollment was 81% Caucasian, 10% Alaska Native, 3% Hispanic, 3% multiethnic, and 4% as the total of American Indian, Asian, Black, and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander. The sample was 3rd (n = 472), 4th (n = 435), and 5th (n = 517) graders and consisted of all students with an Alaska SBA score and an R-CBM score for each of the 3 administrations of the R-CBM used in the 2009-2010 (FY10) and 2010-2011 (FY11) years. Pearson correlations were significant between R-CBM scores across 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades and the same grade Alaska SBA scores for FY10 data, r = .689 to r = .728, p \u3c .01. A test of the full model with R-CBM as predictor against a constant-only model was statistically reliable, p \u3c .001. The R-CBM reliably distinguished between passing and failing the Alaska SBA for students in Grades 3 through 5. Criterion validity of the cut scores was ascertained by applying scores to the FY11 data and yielded adequate levels of sensitivity from 49% to 88% while specificity levels ranged from 89% to 97%

Volunteer commitment and satisfaction in Sport for Disabled organizations.

The first purpose of this study was to identify the sources of satisfaction as measured by the Job Description Index (JDI) and commitment as measured by the Organizational Commitment Questionnaire (OCQ) within volunteers of Sport for the Disabled Organizations. The second purpose of this study was to identify the significant relationships between the sub-sections and general scores of commitment and satisfaction. The third purpose of this study was to identify the demographic characteristics of Sport for the Disabled volunteers and to determine if these characteristics had any relationships to the individual measures of commitment and satisfaction. By identifying appropriate strengths and weaknesses within these relationships, volunteer administrators would be more able to create a satisfied and committed corps of volunteers. For these purposes, a sample of one hundred and eight (108) Sport for Disabled volunteers (from six games sites including St. Catharines, Brockville, Toronto, Burlington, Ottawa, and Sudbury) completed questionnaires. These surveys included one section identifying volunteer demographics, an adapted version of the organizational Commitment Questionnaire (OCQ) (Mowday et al., 1979) identifying commitment and an adapted version of the Job Description Index (Smith, Kendall & Hulin, 1969) measuring satisfaction. Results from this study showed that the measurements of satisfaction and commitment were significant reflections of their combined sub-sections, therefore minimizing the opportunity for administrators to focus on one particular sub-section versus another in the hopes of enhancing a volunteers level of satisfaction or commitment. Predictive relationships between volunteer satisfaction and commitment were minimal. Finally, demographic characteristics, presented minimal significant relationships towards the measures of volunteer satisfaction and commitment. The demographic variables that recorded positive significant relationships include; years of experience with the organization and volunteer commitment; and levels of completed education and volunteer role. Monotone approximation in several variables

AbstractLet Ω denote the unit n-cube, [0, 1]n, and let M be the set of all real valued functions on Ω which are nondecreasing in each variable. If f is a bounded Lebesgue measurable function on Ω and 1 < p < ∞, let ƒp denote the best Lp-approximation to ƒ by elements of M. It is shown that ƒp converges almost everywhere as p decreases to one to a best L1-approximation to f by elements of M. If ƒ is continuous, then ƒp is continuous and converges uniformly as p ↓ 1 to a best L1-approximation to ƒ by elements of M and ƒp converges uniformly as p → ∞ to a best L∞-approximation to ƒ by elements of M

Why Do Females Remain in Violent Dating Relationships?

    Get PDF
Recent interest in the study of physical aggression/coercion in dating violence follows more than a decade of research on marital violence and violence against children. In the 1980\u27s, studies have shown the frequency of violence in dating relationships to be approximately as high as in marriage (Makepeace, 1981, 1983; Laner and Thompson, 1982; Gate, et. al. 1982 and others). These studies revealed 20% or more of those sampled reported at least one incident of dating violence. Consistent with studies of marital violence, incidents are usually perceived as being relatively mild, involving slapping, pushing, and shoving (Henton, et. al., 1983; Makepeace 1981; Gate, et. al., 1982; Straus, et al., 1980). Violence patterns in relationships are evidently established early; Henton et. al (1983) reported a 12.1% violence rate among high school couples, and researchers studying college students have noted that violence frequently begins prior to high school graduation (e.g. Olday and Wesley, 1987). Although available dating violence research clearly underscores the importance of the phenomenon as an area of study, relatively little attention has been directed toward the effects of violence on these relationships: e.g. their stability, and likelihood of resulting in marriage. In many intimate relationships partners appear to endure violence for considerable periods of time. In Stacey and Shupe\u27s (1983) study of residents of a shelter for battered wives, 28% indicated that they had tolerated physical abuse for one to twoyears and 26% reported being victims of abuse for more than five years. In O\u27Brien\u27s (1971) study of divorce applicants, 48% of those involved in violent marriages reported violence to be an integral part of their marital interaction. In premarital relationships, Makepeace (1983) found that 30% of those experiencing violence in a dating relationship experienced it more than once. Gate et. al. (1982) found that those who said the dating relationship worsened because of the violence also said that they had experienced multiple violent acts

    Mining Meaning from Wikipedia

Wikipedia is a goldmine of information; not just for its many readers, but also for the growing community of researchers who recognize it as a resource of exceptional scale and utility. It represents a vast investment of manual effort and judgment: a huge, constantly evolving tapestry of concepts and relations that is being applied to a host of tasks. This article provides a comprehensive description of this work. It focuses on research that extracts and makes use of the concepts, relations, facts and descriptions found in Wikipedia, and organizes the work into four broad categories: applying Wikipedia to natural language processing; using it to facilitate information retrieval and information extraction; and as a resource for ontology building. The article addresses how Wikipedia is being used as is, how it is being improved and adapted, and how it is being combined with other structures to create entirely new resources. We identify the research groups and individuals involved, and how their work has developed in the last few years. We provide a comprehensive list of the open-source software they have produced.Comment: An extensive survey of re-using information in Wikipedia in natural language processing, information retrieval and extraction and ontology building. A revision of the Late Ordovician marellomorph arthropod Furca bohemica from Czech Republic

    Get PDF
The enigmatic marrellomorph arthropod Furca bohemica from the Upper Ordovician Letná Formation, is redescribed. Based on existing museum specimens and new material collected from the southern slope of Ostrý Hill (Beroun, Czech Republic), the morphology and taphonomy of F. bohemica is reappraised and expanded to produce a new anatomical interpretation. The previously distinct taxa F. pilosa and Furca sp., are synonymised with F. bohemica, the latter being represented by a tapho−series in which decay has obscured some of the diagnostic features. A cladistic analysis indicates close affinities between F. bohemica and the Hunsrück Slate marrellomorph Mimetaster hexagonalis, together forming the Family Mimetasteridae, contrary to previous models for marrellomorph internal relationships. As with other representatives of the group, the overall anatomy of F. bohemica is consistent with a benthic, or possibly nektobenthic, mode of life. The depositional setting of the Letná Formation indicates that F. bohemica inhabited a shallow marine environment, distinguishing it palaeoecologically from all other known marrellomorphs, which have been reported from the continental shelf
