    SummaryPurpose of the studyBone tumours are frequent conditions in children, and their surgical resection may lead to extensive defects which reconstruction is often challenging. Indeed, local conditions do not promote bone healing, and the achieved surgical result requires to be life-lasting. Capanna suggested a reconstruction technique combining massive allograft and free vascularized fibular flap. The first one is intended to withstand mechanical stress, and the second one offers biological and vascular support to improve bone healing and prevent infections.Materiel and methodsWe report our experience with this technique when applied to the lower limb in a prospective study including seven children, with a mean follow-up of 44 months.ResultsBone healing was achieved by one single procedure in 85.7% of the cases, usually 7 months after surgery. Six out of seven patients achieved a final and long-lasting outcome, five of them following a simple surgical history. Partial weight-bearing was post-operatively allowed at about 2 months, full weight-bearing was initiated at about 5.5 months.DiscussionA low complication rate was reported despite the extent of the disease and the type of the surgical procedure. Capanna's combined reconstructive technique appears very efficient in the management of massive bone defects following tumour resection in children's lower limb.Level of evidenceLevel IV.     Influência de diferentes agentes auxiliares do preparo biomecânico na obturação de canais laterais artificiais

    The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the influence of some auxiliary agents of biomechanical preparation of the root canal on the filling of artificial lateral canals in extracted human teeth. A total of eighty single-rooted teeth were employed, which were submitted to preparation of three artificial lateral canals in one of the proximal aspects at the cervical, middle and apical thirds, besides one in the buccal aspect. The main canals were prepared by Profile 0.4 rotary instruments through the crown-down technique and irrigated with the irrigants investigated, as follows: Group A - 1% sodium hypochlorite and final irrigation with trisodium EDTA for 5 minutes; Group B - Endogel (2% chlorhexidine gel); Group C - Endo PTC and Dakin's solution and final irrigation with Tergentol- Furacin; and Group D - File Eze. The root canals were obturated by the Tagger's hybrid technique and then radiographed for assessment of the penetration rate of the filling materials in the lateral canals. Analysis of the results demonstrated no statistically significant difference (pObjetivou-se avaliar a influência de alguns agentes auxiliares do preparo biomecânico do canal radicular, na obturação de canais laterais artificiais em dentes humanos extraídos. Foram utilizados oitenta dentes unirradiculados nos quais, previamente, foram confeccionados três canais laterais artificiais em uma das paredes proximais, nos terços cervical, médio e apical e um canal na parede vestibular. Os canais principais foram preparados com instrumentação rotatória, instrumentos Profile 0.4, pela técnica rotatória coroa- ápice e irrigados com a substância irrigadora estudada, sendo no grupo A - hipoclorito de sódio a 1% e irrigação final com EDTA trissódico por 5 minutos; grupo B - Endogel (gel de clorexidina a 2%); grupo C - Endo PTC e solução de Dakin e irrigação final com tergentol-furacin segundo a técnica de Paiva e Antoniazzi e no grupo D - File Eze.     Tick burden on European roe deer (Capreolus capreolus)

    In our study we assessed the tick burden on roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.) in relation to age, physical condition, sex, deer density and season. The main objective was to find predictive parameters for tick burden. In September 2007, May, July, and September 2008, and in May and July 2009 we collected ticks on 142 culled roe deer from nine forest departments in Southern Hesse, Germany. To correlate tick burden and deer density we estimated deer density using line transect sampling that accounts for different detectability in March 2008 and 2009, respectively. We collected more than 8,600 ticks from roe deer heads and necks, 92.6% of which were Ixodes spp., 7.4% Dermacentor spp. Among Ixodes, 3.3% were larvae, 50.5% nymphs, 34.8% females and 11.4% males, with significant seasonal deviation. Total tick infestation was high, with considerable individual variation (from 0 to 270 ticks/deer). Adult tick burden was positively correlated with roe deer body indices (body mass, age, hind foot length). Significantly more nymphs were found on deer from forest departments with high roe deer density indices, indicating a positive correlation with deer abundance.
