Performance and parasitosis in heifers grazing mixed with sows
The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of mixed grazing with first season heifers and pregnant sows on animal performance, gastro-intestinal helminths, pasture quality and sward structure during three grazing seasons. This presentation will focus on results from 1999, primarily regarding performance and parasitosis in heifers. There have been no earlier reports on such mixed grazing systems. Three grazing systems were studied in replicate: 1) Heifers grazing alone; 2) sows grazing alone; 3) heifers grazing together with sows. The heifers were inoculated with low doses of infective O.ostertagi larvae at turn-out. Continuous grazing was practised in paddocks regulated in size according to herbage allowance. Individual weight gain, faecal egg output and serum pepsinogen concentrations - as indicator of O.ostertagi infection - were measured fortnightly. The sward structure and quality were greatly influenced by the applied grazing system. The average daily gain of the heifers was significantly higher (P=0.0006) when grazing together with sows (1,121±45 g/day, n=16) than when grazing alone (869±48 g/day, n=14). The mean pepsinogen concentrations were elevated in the heifers grazing alone. It is concluded, that weight gains were significantly better and infection levels with O.ostertagi were significantly reduced in heifers grazing together with sows
Quantum social networks
We introduce a physical approach to social networks (SNs) in which each actor
is characterized by a yes-no test on a physical system. This allows us to
consider SNs beyond those originated by interactions based on pre-existing
properties, as in a classical SN (CSN). As an example of SNs beyond CSNs, we
introduce quantum SNs (QSNs) in which actor is characterized by a test of
whether or not the system is in a quantum state. We show that QSNs outperform
CSNs for a certain task and some graphs. We identify the simplest of these
graphs and show that graphs in which QSNs outperform CSNs are increasingly
frequent as the number of vertices increases. We also discuss more general SNs
and identify the simplest graphs in which QSNs cannot be outperformed.Comment: REVTeX4, 6 pages, 3 figure
Basic exclusivity graphs in quantum correlations
A fundamental problem is to understand why quantum theory only violates some
noncontextuality (NC) inequalities and identify the physical principles that
prevent higher-than-quantum violations. We prove that quantum theory only
violates those NC inequalities whose exclusivity graphs contain, as induced
subgraphs, odd cycles of length five or more, and/or their complements. In
addition, we show that odd cycles are the exclusivity graphs of a well-known
family of NC inequalities and that there is also a family of NC inequalities
whose exclusivity graphs are the complements of odd cycles. We characterize the
maximum noncontextual and quantum values of these inequalities, and provide
evidence supporting the conjecture that the maximum quantum violation of these
inequalities is exactly singled out by the exclusivity principle.Comment: REVTeX4, 7 pages, 2 figure
Fewer and Better Children: Race, Class, Religion, and Birth Control Reform in America
In the early 20th century, contraceptives were illegal and, for many, especially religious groups, taboo. But, in the span of just two years, between 1929 and 1931, many of the United States’ most prominent religious groups pronounced contraceptives to be moral and began advocating for the laws restricting them to be repealed. Met with everything from support, to silence, to outright condemnation by other religious groups, these pronouncements and the debates they caused divided the American religious field by an issue of sex and gender for the first time. This article explains why America’s religious groups took the positions they did at this crucial moment in history. In doing so, it demonstrates that the politics of sex and gender that divide American religion today is deeply rooted in century-old inequalities of race and class
Notes on the birds of the tidal lowlands and floodplains of South Sumatra province, Indonesia
During an environmental baseline survey of the tidal lowlands and floodplains of South Sumatra Province in 1988-89, a total of 270 bird species was recorded. This paper focuses on wetland species, including those inhabiting swamp forests. No upland forest habitats are found within the region described. The area supports a diverse avifauna, including some globally threatened species that have a core population here, notably Milky Stork Mycteria cinerea, Storm's Stork Ciconia stormi, Lesser Adjutant Leptoptilos javanicus, Black-headed Ibis Threskiomis melanocephatus and Asian Dowitcher Limnodromus semipalmatus. The coast has vital passage and wintering grounds that rank second in importance only to coastal wetlands in Bangladesh for East Palaearctic waders in terms of numbers of birds. Three species were recorded for the first time in Sumatra: Spotted Eagle Aquila clanga, Steppe/Imperial Eagle Aquila nipalensis/heliaca and Spotted Redshank Tringa erythropa, and first Sumatran breeding records were obtained for Javan Pond-heron Ardeola speciosa and White-headed Stilt Himantopus leucocephalus. A few species were observed outside their previously recorded usual habitats. The paper discusses the principal habitats of the area, and the very rapid rate of development that has occurred during the past two decades. Only one wetland area in the province has protection status, Padang-Sugihan. This Wildlife Reserve does not provide habitat for eight out of the eleven globally threatened species recorded in the study area. Consequently the establishment of two additional swamp reserves and bird sanctuary is strongly recommended
Experimental fully contextual correlations
Quantum correlations are contextual yet, in general, nothing prevents the
existence of even more contextual correlations. We identify and test a
noncontextuality inequality in which the quantum violation cannot be improved
by any hypothetical postquantum theory, and use it to experimentally obtain
correlations in which the fraction of noncontextual correlations is less than
0.06. Our correlations are experimentally generated from the results of
sequential compatible tests on a four-state quantum system encoded in the
polarization and path of a single photon.Comment: REVTeX4, 6 pages, 3 figure
Egotisme og retrofleksjon som selvbeskyttelse i veiledning
Fagoppgave i Tverrfaglig videreutdanning i veiledning - 6o studiepoeng.
Avhandling (Ph.D.)
