    Typification of the name Senecio pygmaeus (Asteraceae), with some additional taxonomic and phytogeographic remarks

    A thorough research on the scientific activity of Guglielmo Gasparrini, Giovanni Gussone and Augustin Pyramus De Candolle allowed the authors to address a research in several European herbaria looking for the type of the name Senecio pygmaeus DC. The original specimen sent by Gussone and mentioned in the protologue by Candolle is still kept at G-DC and is designated as the lectotype, whilst three other herbarium sheets, preserved at NAP-GUSS, PAL and PAV herbaria respectively, in all probability belong to the same gathering, and are considered as isolectotypes. The authors provide an updated description of this taxon in order to better point out its diagnostic characters. However, further biosystematic and phytogeographic surveys are needed to ascertain the taxonomic value and the distribution range of S.pygmaeus. Indeed, it might represent just a dwarfed, salt-tolerant ecotype of S.leucanthemifolius Poir. or S.vulgarisL., hence be more widespread than previously reported, counting numerous scattered populations along the rocky shores of central and eastern Mediterranean countries

    Correlations between EEG and clinical outcome in chronic neuropathic pain: surgical effects and treatment resistance

    Chronic neuropathic pain may require a neurosurgical treatment, but for reasons that have not been fully explored yet, a significant number of patients do not benefit from the intervention. We compared the resting EEG of 15 healthy controls to the EEG of 23 chronic neuropathic pain patients before and 12months after treatment by the central lateral thalamotomy (CLT). A patient subgroup had a high (n = 14, pain relief (PR) ≥ 50%) and another subgroup a low (n = 9, PR < 50%) postoperative PR. EEG spectral power and source localization of the high PR patients were normalized postoperatively. In contrast, low PR patients showed postoperative maintenance of insular, cingulate and prefrontal overactivities, and their frustration values were positively correlated with cingulate and prefrontal activity. These findings demonstrate a normalizing effect of CLT on cortical activity and suggest that treatment resistance is associated with a frustration-based dynamic

    Human pallidothalamic and cerebellothalamic tracts: anatomical basis for functional stereotactic neurosurgery

    Anatomical knowledge of the structures to be targeted and of the circuitry involved is crucial in stereotactic functional neurosurgery. The present study was undertaken in the context of surgical treatment of motor disorders such as essential tremor (ET) and Parkinson's disease (PD) to precisely determine the course and three-dimensional stereotactic localisation of the cerebellothalamic and pallidothalamic tracts in the human brain. The course of the fibre tracts to the thalamus was traced in the subthalamic region using multiple staining procedures and their entrance into the thalamus determined according to our atlas of the human thalamus and basal ganglia [Morel (2007) Stereotactic atlas of the human thalamus and basal ganglia. Informa Healthcare Inc., New York]. Stereotactic three-dimensional coordinates were determined by sectioning thalamic and basal ganglia blocks parallel to stereotactic planes and, in two cases, by correlation with magnetic resonance images (MRI) from the same brains prior to sectioning. The major contributions of this study are to provide: (1) evidence that the bulks of the cerebellothalamic and pallidothalamic tracts are clearly separated up to their thalamic entrance, (2) stereotactic maps of the two tracts in the subthalamic region, (3) the possibility to discriminate between different subthalamic fibre tracts on the basis of immunohistochemical stainings, (4) correlations of histologically identified fibre tracts with high-resolution MRI, and (5) evaluation of the interindividual variability of the fibre systems in the subthalamic region.     <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The physiopathological mechanism underlying the tinnitus phenomenon is still the subject of an ongoing debate. Since oscillatory EEG activity is increasingly recognized as a fundamental hallmark of cortical integrative functions, this study investigates deviations from the norm of different resting EEG parameters in patients suffering from chronic tinnitus.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Spectral parameters of resting EEG of male tinnitus patients (n = 8, mean age 54 years) were compared to those of age-matched healthy males (n = 15, mean age 58.8 years). On average, the patient group exhibited higher spectral power over the frequency range of 2-100 Hz. Using LORETA source analysis, the generators of delta, theta, alpha and beta power increases were localized dominantly to left auditory (Brodmann Areas (BA) 41,42, 22), temporo-parietal, insular posterior, cingulate anterior and parahippocampal cortical areas.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Tinnitus patients show a deviation from the norm of different resting EEG parameters, characterized by an overproduction of resting state delta, theta and beta brain activities, providing further support for the microphysiological and magnetoencephalographic evidence pointing to a thalamocortical dysrhythmic process at the source of tinnitus. These results also provide further confirmation that reciprocal involvements of both auditory and associative/paralimbic areas are essential in the generation of tinnitus.</p

    Increased EEG power and slowed dominant frequency in patients with neurogenic pain

    To study the mechanisms of chronic neurogenic pain, we compared the power spectra of the resting EEG of patients (n = 15, 38-75 years, median 64 years, 6 women) and healthy controls (n = 15, 41-71 years, median 60 years, 8 women). On an average, the patient group exhibited higher spectral power over the frequency range of 2-25 Hz, and the dominant peak was shifted towards lower frequencies. Maximal differences appeared in the 7-9 Hz band in all electrodes. Frontal electrodes contributed most to this difference in the 13-15 Hz band. Bicoherence analysis suggests an enhanced coupling between theta (4-9 Hz) and beta (12-25 Hz) frequencies in patients. The subgroup of six patients free from centrally acting medication showed higher spectral power in the 2-18 Hz frequency range. On an individual basis, the combination of peak height and peak frequency discriminated between patient and control groups: discriminant analysis classified 87% of all subjects correctly. After a therapeutic lesion in the thalamus (central lateral thalamotomy, CLT) we carried out follow-up for a subgroup of seven patients. Median pain relief was 70 and 95% after 3 and 12 months, respectively. The average EEG power of all seven patients gradually decreased in the theta band and approached normal values only after 12 months. The excess theta EEG power in patients and its decrease after thalamic surgery suggests that both EEG and neurogenic pain are determined by tightly coupled thalamocortical loops.     Floristic analyses of the Corsican flora: distribution in ecological compartments (vegetation belts, habitats and substrates)

    This article analyzes partial data published in the &quot;Flora Corsica&quot; in order to characterize the Corsican vascular flora. These analyses focus on different aspects of the flora such as species richness, taxonomic distribution, abundance and life-forms at different vegetation belts, habitats and substrates. The results are compared with other geographic regions, particularly from the European Mediterranean and adjacent areas. The decrease of species richness with an increase of altitude as well as the sharp decrease of Fabaceae has been confirmed. Regarding the biological spectrum, the decrease of the therophytes with an increase of altitude is obvious and compensated by the increase of the hemicryptophytes. On Corsica several peculiarities have been highlighted in the different ecological compartments: 1. the littoral and the cryo-oromediterranean belts appear to be very different from the others in many features; 2. the rocky habitats are shown to be especially important for the diversity of families such as Poaceae and Caryophyllaceae; 3. calcareous areas are shown to be extremely important for the alpha diversity as well as for the restricted range taxa.     Pain Ratings, Psychological Functioning and Quantitative EEG in a Controlled Study of Chronic Back Pain Patients

    <div><h3>Objectives</h3><p>Several recent studies report the presence of a specific EEG pattern named Thalamocortical Dysrhythmia (TCD) in patients with severe chronic neurogenic pain. This is of major interest since so far no neuroscientific indicator of chronic pain could be identified. We investigated whether a TCD-like pattern could be found in patients with moderate chronic back pain, and we compared patients with neuropathic and non-neuropathic pain components. We furthermore assessed the presence of psychopathology and the degree of psychological functioning and examined whether the strength of the TCD-related EEG markers is correlated with psychological symptoms and pain ratings.</p> <h3>Design</h3><p>Controlled clinical trial with age and sex matched healthy controls.</p> <h3>Methods</h3><p>Spontaneous EEG was recorded in 37 back pain patients and 37 healthy controls.</p> <h3>Results</h3><p>We were not able to observe a statistically significant TCD effect in the EEG data of the whole patient group, but a subsample of patients with evidence for root damage showed a trend in this direction. Pain patients showed markedly increased psychopathology. In addition, patients' ratings of pain intensity within the last 1 to 12 months showed strong correlations with EEG power, while psychopathology was correlated to the peak frequency.</p> <h3>Conclusion</h3><p>Out of several possible interpretations the most likely conclusion is that only patients with severe pain as well as root lesions with consecutive thalamic deafferentation develop the typical TCD pattern. Our primary method of defining ‘neuropathic pain’ could not reliably determine if such a deafferentation was present. Nevertheless the analysis of a specific subsample as well as correlations between pain ratings, psychopathology and EEG power and peak frequency give some support to the TCD concept.</p> <h3>Trial Registration</h3><p>ClinicalTrials.gov <a href="http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00744575">NCT00744575</a></p> </div

    Anatomical and Technical Reappraisal of the Pallidothalamic Tractotomy With the Incisionless Transcranial MR-Guided Focused Ultrasound. A Technical Note

    Background: MR-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) offers new perspectives for safe and efficient lesioning inside the brain. The issue of target coverage remains primordial and sub-optimally addressed or solved in the field of functional neurosurgery.Objective: To provide an optimized planning and operative strategy to perform a pallidothalamic tractotomy (PTT) in chronic therapy-resistant Parkinson's disease (PD) with the technology of MRgFUS.Methods and results: Histological sections and maps from 6 human brain hemispheres were analyzed and outlines of the pallidothalamic tract on Myelin-stained sections were drawn and superimposed. We determined a standardized PTT target coverage characterized by 5 to 7 preplanned target lesion sub-units of 1.5 × 1.5 × 3.0 mm, which were placed using focal point displacements and shortest possible times, under thermal dose control.Conclusion: We hereby present our current approach to the MRgFUS PTT on the basis of a histological reappraisal and optimized heat application to the pallidothalamic tract in the H1 field of Forel

    Radiological and Thermal Dose Correlations in Pallidothalamic Tractotomy With MRgFUS

    Background: MR-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) offers the possibility of safe and accurate lesioning inside the brain. Until now, most MRgFUS thermal applications have been based on temperature or energy protocols. Experimental studies support however an approach centered on thermal dose control.Objective: To show the technical feasibility and lesion size predictability of a thermal dose approach during MRgFUS pallidothalamic tractotomy (PTT) against chronic therapy-resistant Parkinson's disease (PD).Methods: MR and thermal dose data were analyzed in 31 MRgFUS interventions between January and December 2017 in patients suffering from chronic therapy-resistant Parkinson's disease (PD) using a standardized PTT target covered by 5 to 7 target lesion sub-units.Results: Good correlations were found between (1) the mean axial T2 lesion diameter intraoperatively and the mean 240 cumulative equivalent min at 43°C (240 CEM) thermal dose diameter (r = 0.52), (2) the mean axial T2 diameter 48 h post-treatment and the mean 18 CEM thermal dose diameter (r = 0.62), and (3) the mean axial T2 diameter intraoperatively and 48 h post-treatment (r = 0.62).Conclusion: Our current approach using a thermal dose steering for multiple target lesion sub-units could be reproduced in 31 interventions with a good lesion size predictability

    Topography-driven isolation, speciation and a global increase of endemism with elevation

    Aim: Higher-elevation areas on islands and continental mountains tend to be separated by longer distances, predicting higher endemism at higher elevations; our study is the first to test the generality of the predicted pattern. We also compare it empirically with contrasting expectations from hypotheses invoking higher speciation with area, temperature and species richness. Location: Thirty-two insular and 18 continental elevational gradients from around the world. Methods: We compiled entire floras with elevation-specific occurrence information, and calculated the proportion of native species that are endemic (‘percent endemism’) in 100-m bands, for each of the 50 elevational gradients. Using generalized linear models, we tested the relationships between percent endemism and elevation, isolation, temperature, area and species richness. Results: Percent endemism consistently increased monotonically with elevation, globally. This was independent of richness–elevation relationships, which had varying shapes but decreased with elevation at high elevations. The endemism–elevation relationships were consistent with isolation-related predictions, but inconsistent with hypotheses related to area, richness and temperature. Main conclusions: Higher per-species speciation rates caused by increasing isolation with elevation are the most plausible and parsimonious explanation for the globally consistent pattern of higher endemism at higher elevations that we identify. We suggest that topography-driven isolation increases speciation rates in mountainous areas, across all elevations and increasingly towards the equator. If so, it represents a mechanism that may contribute to generating latitudinal diversity gradients in a way that is consistent with both present-day and palaeontological evidence
