Green Production of Anionic Surfactant Obtained from Pea Protein
A pea protein isolate was hydrolyzed by a double enzyme treatment method in order to obtain short peptide sequences used as raw materials to produce lipopeptides-based surfactants. Pea protein hydrolysates were prepared using the combination of Alcalase and Flavourzyme. The influence of the process variables was studied to optimize the proteolytic degradation to high degrees of hydrolysis. The average peptide chain lengths were obtained at 3–5 amino acid units after a hydrolysis of 30 min with the mixture of enzymes. Then, N-acylation in water, in presence of acid chloride (C12 and C16), carried out with a conversion rate of amine functions of 90%, allowed to obtain anionic surfactant mixtures (lipopeptides and sodium fatty acids). These two steps were performed in water, in continuous and did not generate any waste. This process was therefore in line with green chemistry principles. The surface activities (CMC, foaming and emulsifying properties) of these mixtures were also studied. These formulations obtained from natural renewable resources and the reactions done under environmental respect, could replace petrochemical based surfactants for some applications
A multi-site campaign to measure solar-like oscillations in Procyon. II. Mode frequencies
We have analyzed data from a multi-site campaign to observe oscillations in
the F5 star Procyon. The data consist of high-precision velocities that we
obtained over more than three weeks with eleven telescopes. A new method for
adjusting the data weights allows us to suppress the sidelobes in the power
spectrum. Stacking the power spectrum in a so-called echelle diagram reveals
two clear ridges that we identify with even and odd values of the angular
degree (l=0 and 2, and l=1 and 3, respectively). We interpret a strong, narrow
peak at 446 muHz that lies close to the l=1 ridge as a mode with mixed
character. We show that the frequencies of the ridge centroids and their
separations are useful diagnostics for asteroseismology. In particular,
variations in the large separation appear to indicate a glitch in the
sound-speed profile at an acoustic depth of about 1000 s. We list frequencies
for 55 modes extracted from the data spanning 20 radial orders, a range
comparable to the best solar data, which will provide valuable constraints for
theoretical models. A preliminary comparison with published models shows that
the offset between observed and calculated frequencies for the radial modes is
very different for Procyon than for the Sun and other cool stars. We find the
mean lifetime of the modes in Procyon to be 1.29 +0.55/-0.49 days, which is
significantly shorter than the 2-4 days seen in the Sun.Comment: accepted for publication in Ap
Validation of a novel multivariate method of defining HIV-associated cognitive impairment
Background. The optimum method of defining cognitive impairment in virally suppressed people living with HIV is unknown.
We evaluated the relationships between cognitive impairment, including using a novel multivariate method (NMM), patient–
reported outcome measures (PROMs), and neuroimaging markers of brain structure across 3 cohorts.
Methods. Differences in the prevalence of cognitive impairment, PROMs, and neuroimaging data from the COBRA, CHARTER,
and POPPY cohorts (total n = 908) were determined between HIV-positive participants with and without cognitive impairment defined using the HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND), global deficit score (GDS), and NMM criteria.
Results. The prevalence of cognitive impairment varied by up to 27% between methods used to define impairment (eg, 48% for HAND
vs 21% for NMM in the CHARTER study). Associations between objective cognitive impairment and subjective cognitive complaints generally were weak. Physical and mental health summary scores (SF-36) were lowest for NMM-defined impairment (P < .05).
There were no differences in brain volumes or cortical thickness between participants with and without cognitive impairment defined using the HAND and GDS measures. In contrast, those identified with cognitive impairment by the NMM had reduced mean
cortical thickness in both hemispheres (P < .05), as well as smaller brain volumes (P < .01). The associations with measures of white
matter microstructure and brain-predicted age generally were weaker.
Conclusion. Different methods of defining cognitive impairment identify different people with varying symptomatology and
measures of brain injury. Overall, NMM-defined impairment was associated with most neuroimaging abnormalities and poorer selfreported health status. This may be due to the statistical advantage of using a multivariate approac
Genomic investigations of unexplained acute hepatitis in children
Since its first identification in Scotland, over 1,000 cases of unexplained paediatric hepatitis in children have been reported worldwide, including 278 cases in the UK1. Here we report an investigation of 38 cases, 66 age-matched immunocompetent controls and 21 immunocompromised comparator participants, using a combination of genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic and immunohistochemical methods. We detected high levels of adeno-associated virus 2 (AAV2) DNA in the liver, blood, plasma or stool from 27 of 28 cases. We found low levels of adenovirus (HAdV) and human herpesvirus 6B (HHV-6B) in 23 of 31 and 16 of 23, respectively, of the cases tested. By contrast, AAV2 was infrequently detected and at low titre in the blood or the liver from control children with HAdV, even when profoundly immunosuppressed. AAV2, HAdV and HHV-6 phylogeny excluded the emergence of novel strains in cases. Histological analyses of explanted livers showed enrichment for T cells and B lineage cells. Proteomic comparison of liver tissue from cases and healthy controls identified increased expression of HLA class 2, immunoglobulin variable regions and complement proteins. HAdV and AAV2 proteins were not detected in the livers. Instead, we identified AAV2 DNA complexes reflecting both HAdV-mediated and HHV-6B-mediated replication. We hypothesize that high levels of abnormal AAV2 replication products aided by HAdV and, in severe cases, HHV-6B may have triggered immune-mediated hepatic disease in genetically and immunologically predisposed children
A Multisite Campaign to Measure Solar-Like Oscillations in Procyon. I. Observations, Data Reduction and Slow Variations
International audienceWe have carried out a multisite campaign to measure oscillations in the F5 star Procyon A. We obtained high-precision velocity observations over more than three weeks with 11 telescopes, with almost continuous coverage for the central 10 days. This represents the most extensive campaign so far organized on any solar-type oscillator. We describe in detail the methods we used for processing and combining the data. These involved calculating weights for the velocity time series from the measurement uncertainties and adjusting them in order to minimize the noise level of the combined data. The time series of velocities for Procyon shows the clear signature of oscillations, with a plateau of excess power that is centered at 0.9 mHz and is broader than has been seen for other stars. The mean amplitude of the radial modes is 38:1 AE 1:3 cm s À1 (2.0 times solar), which is consistent with previous detections from the ground and by the WIRE spacecraft, and also with the upper limit set by the MOST spacecraft. The variation of the amplitude during the observing campaign allows us to estimate the mode lifetime to be 1:5 þ1:9 À0:8 days. We also find a slow variation in the radial velocity of Procyon, with good agreement between different telescopes. These variations are remarkably similar to those seen in the Sun, and we interpret them as being due to rotational modulation from active regions on the stellar surface. The variations appear to have a period of about 10 days, which presumably equals the stellar rotation period or, perhaps, half of it. The amount of power in these slow variations indicates that the fractional area of Procyon covered by active regions is slightly higher than for the Sun

Wood falls in the deep sea have recently become the focus of studies showing their importance as nutrients on the deep-sea Xoor. In such environments, Crustaceans constitute numerically the second-largest group after Mollusks. Many questions have arisen regarding their trophic role therein. A careful examination of the feeding appendages, gut contents, and gut lining of Munidopsis andamanica caught with wood falls revealed this species as a truly original detritivorous species using wood and the biofilm covering it as two main food sources. Comparing individuals from other geographic areas from substrates not reported highlights the galatheid crab as specialist of refractory substrates, especially vegetal remains. M. andamanica also exhibits a resident gut microXora consisting of bacteria and fungi possibly involved in the digestion of wood fragments. The results suggest that Crustaceans could be full-fledged actors in the food chains of sunken-wood ecosystems and that feeding habits of some squat lobsters could be different than scavenging.GDRE-DIWOOD research program (“Diversity, Establishment, and Function of Organisms Associated with Marine Wood Falls”
