The Gemini NICI Planet-Finding Campaign
Our team is carrying out a multi-year observing program to directly image and
characterize young extrasolar planets using the Near-Infrared Coronagraphic
Imager (NICI) on the Gemini-South 8.1-meter telescope. NICI is the first
instrument on a large telescope designed from the outset for high-contrast
imaging, comprising a high-performance curvature adaptive optics system with a
simultaneous dual-channel coronagraphic imager. Combined with state-of-the-art
observing methods and data processing, NICI typically achieves ~2 magnitudes
better contrast compared to previous ground-based or space-based programs, at
separations inside of ~2 arcsec. In preparation for the Campaign, we carried
out efforts to identify previously unrecognized young stars, to rigorously
construct our observing strategy, and to optimize the combination of angular
and spectral differential imaging. The Planet-Finding Campaign is in its second
year, with first-epoch imaging of 174 stars already obtained out of a total
sample of 300 stars. We describe the Campaign's goals, design, implementation,
performance, and preliminary results. The NICI Campaign represents the largest
and most sensitive imaging survey to date for massive (~1 Mjup) planets around
other stars. Upon completion, the Campaign will establish the best measurements
to date on the properties of young gas-giant planets at ~5-10 AU separations.
Finally, Campaign discoveries will be well-suited to long-term orbital
monitoring and detailed spectrophotometric followup with next-generation

The Gemini NICI Planet-Finding Campaign: The Frequency of Giant Planets Around Debris Disk Stars
We have completed a high-contrast direct imaging survey for giant planets
around 57 debris disk stars as part of the Gemini NICI Planet-Finding Campaign.
We achieved median H-band contrasts of 12.4 mag at 0.5" and 14.1 mag at 1"
separation. Follow-up observations of the 66 candidates with projected
separation < 500 AU show that all of them are background objects. To establish
statistical constraints on the underlying giant planet population based on our
imaging data, we have developed a new Bayesian formalism that incorporates (1)
non-detections, (2) single-epoch candidates, (3) astrometric and (4)
photometric information, and (5) the possibility of multiple planets per star
to constrain the planet population. Our formalism allows us to include in our
analysis the previously known Beta Pictoris and the HR 8799 planets. Our
results show at 95% confidence that 5MJup
planet beyond 80 AU, and 3MJup planet outside
of 40 AU, based on hot-start evolutionary models. We model the population of
directly-imaged planets as d^2N/dMda ~ m^alpha a^beta, where m is planet mass
and a is orbital semi-major axis (with a maximum value of amax). We find that
beta 1.7. Likewise, we find that beta < -0.8 and/or amax
< 200 AU. If we ignore the Beta Pic and HR 8799 planets (should they belong to
a rare and distinct group), we find that
3MJup planet beyond 10 AU, and beta < -0.8 and/or alpha < -1.5. Our Bayesian
constraints are not strong enough to reveal any dependence of the planet
frequency on stellar host mass. Studies of transition disks have suggested that
about 20% of stars are undergoing planet formation; our non-detections at large
separations show that planets with orbital separation > 40 AU and planet masses

Changes in physicochemical characteristics during fruit development in June-bearing strawberry cultivars
Changes in physicochemical characteristics were investigated during fruit development in 'Maehyang', 'Seolhyang', 'Keumhyang', 'Akihime', and 'Red Pearl' strawberries. Fresh weights and color parameters of strawberry fruits changed significantly during the fruit development in all cultivars. Fruit shapes of 'Maehyang' and 'Akihime' were conical, with an index of length to width being 1.5 and that of 'Seolhyang', 'Keumhyang', and 'Red Pearl' were cordate, the index being 1.3. Firmness decreased as the fruit developed in all cultivars. Contents of sugars, organic acids, ascorbic acid, and anthocyanin increased as the fruits developed while the ellagic acid content decreased. Sugars, ascorbic acid, and anthocyanin contents of 'Maehyang', 'Seolhyang', and 'Keumhyang' were higher than those of 'Akihime' and 'Red Pearl'. A Case of a Pulmonary Arteriovenous Malformation With Ebstein's Anomaly
A pulmonary arteriovenous malformation (PAVM) is a rare pulmonary vascular anomaly presenting as dyspnea or recurrent epistaxis. Ebstein's anomaly (EA), a congenital cardiac malformation, is also a rare condition. There have been no reports concerning the co-existence of PAVM with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) and EA. A 40-year-old woman was admitted with a 2-month history of increasing dyspnea and several years of recurrent epistaxis. On transthoracic echocardiography, she was diagnosed with EA and agreed to undergo surgical treatment. A chest CT angiography showed a 12-mm serpiginous vascular structure suspicious for a PAVM and a liver CT suggested HTT. Although it is unclear whether or not a concurrent PAVM and EA have an embryologic or genetic relationship, we report a case of a PAVM with EA. Further genetic and embryonic studies are needed to identify a possible relationship of the two medical conditions
Measurement of the branching fraction and CP content for the decay B(0) -> D(*+)D(*-)

Copyright @ 2002 APS.We report a measurement of the branching fraction of the decay B0→D*+D*- and of the CP-odd component of its final state using the BABAR detector. With data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.4 fb-1 collected at the Υ(4S) resonance during 1999–2000, we have reconstructed 38 candidate signal events in the mode B0→D*+D*- with an estimated background of 6.2±0.5 events. From these events, we determine the branching fraction to be B(B0→D*+D*-)=[8.3±1.6(stat)±1.2(syst)]×10-4. Measurement of the B0-anti-B0-Oscillation Frequency with Inclusive Dilepton Events
The - oscillation frequency has been measured with a sample of
23 million \B\bar B pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II
asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we select events in which both B
mesons decay semileptonically and use the charge of the leptons to identify the
flavor of each B meson. A simultaneous fit to the decay time difference
distributions for opposite- and same-sign dilepton events gives ps.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, submitted to Physical Review Letter
Mixed-linker UiO-66: structure–property relationships revealed by a combination of high-resolution powder X-ray diffraction and density functional theory calculations
The use of mixed-linker metal–organic frameworks (MIXMOFs) is one of the most effective strategies to modulate the physical–chemical properties of MOFs without affecting the overall crystal structure. In many instances, MIXMOFs have been recognized as solid solutions, with random distribution of ligands, in agreement with the empirical rule known as Vegard's law. In this work, we have undertaken a study combining high-resolution powder X-ray diffraction (HR-PXRD) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations with the aim of understanding the reasons why UiO-66-based amino- and bromo-functionalized MIXMOFs (MIXUiO-66) undergo cell expansion obeying Vegard's law and how this behaviour is related to their physical–chemical properties. DFT calculations predict that the unit cell in amino-functionalized UiO-66 experiences only minor expansion as a result of steric effects, whereas major modification to the electronic features of the framework leads to weaker metal–linker interaction and consequently to the loss of stability at higher degrees of functionalization. For bromo-functionalized UiO-66, steric repulsion due to the size of bromine yields a large cell expansion, but the electronic features remain very similar to pristine UiO-66, preserving the stability of the framework upon functionalization. MIXUiO-66 obtained by either direct synthesis or by post-synthetic exchange shows Vegard-like behaviour, suggesting that both preparation methods yield solid solutions, but the thermal stability and the textural properties of the post-synthetic exchanged materials do not display a clear dependence on the chemical composition, as observed for the MOFs obtained by direct synthesis
A Study of Time-Dependent CP-Violating Asymmetries and Flavor Oscillations in Neutral B Decays at the Upsilon(4S)
We present a measurement of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in
neutral B meson decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II
asymmetric-energy B Factory at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The data
sample consists of 29.7 recorded at the
resonance and 3.9 off-resonance. One of the neutral B mesons,
which are produced in pairs at the , is fully reconstructed in
the CP decay modes , , , () and , or in flavor-eigenstate
modes involving and (). The flavor of the other neutral B meson is tagged at the time of
its decay, mainly with the charge of identified leptons and kaons. The proper
time elapsed between the decays is determined by measuring the distance between
the decay vertices. A maximum-likelihood fit to this flavor eigenstate sample
finds . The value of the asymmetry amplitude is determined from
a simultaneous maximum-likelihood fit to the time-difference distribution of
the flavor-eigenstate sample and about 642 tagged decays in the
CP-eigenstate modes. We find , demonstrating that CP violation exists in the neutral B meson

Measurement of D-s(+) and D-s(*+) production in B meson decays and from continuum e(+)e(-) annihilation at √s=10.6 GeV

Copyright @ 2002 APSNew measurements of Ds+ and Ds*+ meson production rates from B decays and from qq̅ continuum events near the Υ(4S) resonance are presented. Using 20.8 fb-1 of data on the Υ(4S) resonance and 2.6 fb-1 off-resonance, we find the inclusive branching fractions B(B⃗Ds+X)=(10.93±0.19±0.58±2.73)% and B(B⃗Ds*+X)=(7.9±0.8±0.7±2.0)%, where the first error is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the Ds+→φπ+ branching fraction uncertainty. The production cross sections σ(e+e-→Ds+X)×B(Ds+→φπ+)=7.55±0.20±0.34pb and σ(e+e-→Ds*±X)×B(Ds+→φπ+)=5.8±0.7±0.5pb are measured at center-of-mass energies about 40 MeV below the Υ(4S) mass. The branching fractions ΣB(B⃗Ds(*)+D(*))=(5.07±0.14±0.30±1.27)% and ΣB(B⃗Ds*+D(*))=(4.1±0.2±0.4±1.0)% are determined from the Ds(*)+ momentum spectra. Body mass index and risk of head and neck cancer in a pooled analysis of case-control studies in the International Head and Neck Cancer Epidemiology (INHANCE) Consortium
Background Head and neck cancer (HNC) risk is elevated among lean people and reduced among overweight or obese people in some studies; however, it is unknown whether these associations differ for certain subgroups or are influenced by residual confounding from the effects of alcohol and tobacco use or by other sources of biases. Methods We pooled data from 17 case-control studies including 12 716 cases and the 17 438 controls. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated for associations between body mass index (BMI) at different ages and HNC risk, adjusted for age, sex, centre, race, education, tobacco smoking and alcohol consumption. Results Adjusted ORs (95% CIs) were elevated for people with BMI at reference (date of diagnosis for cases and date of selection for controls) ≤18.5 kg/m2 (2.13, 1.75-2.58) and reduced for BMI >25.0-30.0 kg/m2 (0.52, 0.44-0.60) and BMI ≥30 kg/m2 (0.43, 0.33-0.57), compared with BMI >18.5-25.0 kg/m2. These associations did not differ by age, sex, tumour site or control source. Although the increased risk among people with BMI ≤18.5 kg/m2 was not modified by tobacco smoking or alcohol drinking, the inverse association for people with BMI > 25 kg/m2 was present only in smokers and drinkers. Conclusions In our large pooled analysis, leanness was associated with increased HNC risk regardless of smoking and drinking status, although reverse causality cannot be excluded. The reduced risk among overweight or obese people may indicate body size is a modifier of the risk associated with smoking and drinking.
