    Get PDF
This research explored the life journeys of Indigenous Australian business women residing in Victoria, Australia. In addition, Indigenous community views were explored to uncover the factors that may impact on business women from their relationships with the Indigenous community. The findings add insight into the relationship interplay between the Indigenous community and Victorian Indigenous business women. The research involved the exploration of knowledge and experience of participants using a base feminist theory with Participatory Action Research (PAR) that had concepts adopted from co-operative inquiry utilising cycles of action and reflection. The action cycles were the sharing of stories in both focus groups and individual sessions. The interview sessions were unstructured where the thoughts and emotive processes of participants generated in action cycles, defined the direction of the reflection cycles. The reflective cycle action was achieved by presenting the 21 participants with an opportunity to verify the information that was disclosed during interview and to provide additional information such as stories, poetry or pictures to express their journey thereby providing richness to their data. All participants were considered to be co-researchers and the author being an Indigenous person, facilitated in open, trusting communication exchange. The research uncovered four main themes of family; business; government and culture/community that affected both community and business women and highlighted the critical areas of concern, including the importance of education, family connectedness and adequate support. It is often accepted that the Indigenous community has a connectedness to culture that is specific to Indigenous Australians. The research had significant findings that inform business, government, community, women and Indigenous people, as well as contribute to academe. Finally, recommendations for government agencies such as the Koori Business Network to help support current Indigenous business women and to help increase the numbers of Indigenous business women in Victoria are presented

Severe, steroid-responsive, myositis mimicking necrotizing fasciitis following orthopedic surgery: a pyoderma variant with myonecrosis

    Get PDF
Postoperative pyoderma gangrenosum is a rare neutrophilic dermatosis that may be confused for necrotizing fasciitis. The inflammatory response is triggered by the trauma of surgery and thus must be managed nonsurgically. Clinical and pathological findings in the 2 diseases can be identical, leading to misdiagnosis and massive surgical defects from the ensuing surgery. This report documents a severe case of postsurgical pyoderma following an elective rotator cuff repair presenting with myositis and myonecrosis. The patient was initially treated as having an infection, which resulted in multiple aggressive surgical debridements. Despite this, the patient continued to deteriorate and was in a critical and hemodynamically unstable condition. Following administration of high-dose intravenous corticosteroids, the patient made a dramatic recovery and went on to have internal fixation of the shoulder and closure of the wound with a combination of a free flap and a rotational flap. Extensive myositis, as seen in this case, has not been previously reported in postoperative pyoderma gangrenosum variants. Clinicians should be aware that the presence of myositis and myonecrosis should not preclude this diagnosis

A 52-year-old diabetic man presented to the Emergency Department with a history of fevers and pain in his right thigh. He had recently returned from a 10-month trip to Vietnam. A suspected bacterial abscess in the right thigh did not respond to empirical antibiotics. Subsequent investigations revealed melioidotic osteomyelitis of the femur. This case emphasises the need to consider the diagnosis of melioidosis in patients presenting with fever following travel in endemic areas

Fire safety protection motivation and preparedness in Irish apartments: a post-Grenfell analysis

    Get PDF
This study used an extended version of Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) to identify the variables that influence fire safety preparedness in apartment buildings. PMT was extended to include an individual’s perceived responsibility for fire safety within their building. A survey of 455 respondents living in apartments in Dublin, Ireland, was undertaken to ascertain the level of fire safety awareness and preparedness among residents. Data analysis included correlations, ordinary least squares regressions and probit analysis. The findings reveal a worrying lack of preparedness and that fire safety preparedness motivation is complex, sometimes producing counterintuitive results. For example, a high level of worry about a fire increased the probability that a respondent tested their smoke detector(s) by 27.4 pp, yet was associated with a 33.3 pp reduction in the probability that a respondent acted in line with the building evacuation policy. The factors which influenced preparedness motivation also varied depending on the specific safety measure. For instance, assuming a personal responsibility for fire safety in the building was positively associated with perceived preparedness and having an extinguisher or fire blanket. Conversely, no relationship was observed between personal responsibility for fire safety and the presence of household fire plans, appropriate fire alarm response behaviour, or smoke detector testing. The critical contribution of this study is the identification of factors that act as barriers to, or facilitators of, fire safety in residential apartments. Understanding what drives fire safety can be used to enhance the effectiveness of preparedness messaging to inform public fire safety campaigns

Wild poliovirus–associated paralytic poliomyelitis has not been reported in Australia since 1977. We report type 1 wild poliovirus infection in a man who had traveled from Pakistan to Australia in 2007. Poliomyelitis should be considered for patients with acute flaccid paralysis or unexplained fever who have been to poliomyelitis-endemic countries

The effects of instruction and environmental demand on state anxiety, driving performance and autonomic activity: Are ego-threatening manipulations effective?

    Get PDF
A small yet emerging body of research on the relationship between anxiety and driving suggests that higher levels of state anxiety may lead to more dangerous driving behaviours. The aim of the current research was to investigate the effects of increased state anxiety on driving behaviours within a simulated environment using instructional sets to manipulate anxiety levels. In Study One, whilst a set of safety-related instructions were able to increase state anxiety, this did not result in changes to driving behaviours. In Study Two, ego-threatening instructions were not able to successfully increase state anxiety. This has implications regarding instructional sets in research, including their task relevance and the necessity for a motivational incentive. However, when changes in anxiety were considered regardless of instruction group, Study Two found changes in SDLP and skin conductance levels related to state anxiety increases. As these effects were context specific, it is argued that some of these changes may be due to poorer processing efficiency, leading to suggestions about the types of behaviours that may need to be trained in potential therapies for those who show high state anxiety levels whilst driving

Financial support from the Austrian Science Fund FWF (Project no. P 21192-N17) and from the Spanish Ministry of Education (Joint Project no. AT2009-0019) is gratefully acknowledged. The authors thank the Institute of Organic Chemistry, Graz University of Technology, particularly Jana Rentner, MSc for kind support in performing LC-MS. Furthermore, we thank Johann Pichler, Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, Graz University of Technology, for acquiring 19F-NMR spectra, as well as Sarah Schiller and Stefan Schobesberger.A new class of rhodamines for the application as indicator dyes in fluorescent pH sensors is presented. Their pH-sensitivity derives from photoinduced electron transfer between non-protonated amino groups and the excited chromophore which results in effective fluorescence quenching at increasing pH. The new indicator class carries a pentafluorophenyl group at the 9-position of the xanthene core where other rhodamines bear 2-carboxyphenyl substituents instead. The pentafluorophenyl group is used for covalent coupling to sensor matrices by “click” reaction with mercapto groups. Photophysical properties are similar to “classical” rhodamines carrying 2′-carboxy groups. pH sensors have been prepared with two different matrix materials, silica gel and poly(2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate). Both sensors show high luminescence brightness (absolute fluorescence quantum yield ΦF≈0.6) and high pH-sensitivity at pH 5–7 which makes them suitable for monitoring biotechnological samples. To underline practical applicability, a dually lifetime referenced sensor containing Cr(III)-doped Al2O3 as reference material is presented.Austrian Science Fund (FWF) P 21192-N17Spanish Government AT2009-001

New fluorescent perylene bisimide indicators—a platform for broadband pH optodes

    Get PDF
Asymmetric perylene bisimide (PBI) dyes are prepared and are shown to be suitable for the preparation of fluorescence chemosensors for pH. They carry one amino-functional substituent which introduces pH sensitivity via photoinduced electron transfer (PET) while the other one increases solubility. The luminescence quantum yields for the new indicators exceed 75% in the protonated form. The new indicators are non-covalently entrapped in polyurethane hydrogel D4 and poly(hydroxyalkylmethacrylates). Several PET functions including aliphatic and aromatic amino groups were successfully used to tune the dynamic range of the sensor. Because of their virtually identical spectral properties, various PBIs with selected PET functions can easily be integrated into a single sensor with enlarged dynamic range (over 4 pH units). PBIs with two different substitution patterns in the bay position are investigated and possess variable spectral properties. Compared with their tetrachloro analogues, tetra-tert-butyl-substituted PBIs yield more long-wave excitable sensors which feature excellent photostability. Cross-sensitivity to ionic strength was found to be negligible. The practical applicability of the sensors may be compromised by the long response times (especially in case of tetra-tert-butyl-substituted PBIs)
