    The effect of Charolais and Hereford sires and straightbred and crossbred dams on pre-weaning growth of calves

    Weaning performance of calves sired by Charolais and Hereford on dams of Angus, Bonsmara and Hereford and various crossbred dam combinations was compared. Charolais sired calves were on average 5 kg heavier at birth and 20 kg heavier at weaning than Hereford sired calves. Among the three straightbred dam breeds, the Bonsmara weaned calves that were approximately 6% heavier than both the Angus and the Hereford calves. The use of crossbred dams having intermediate levels of Charolais composition is suggested in crossbreeding programmes in intensive production systems based on cultivated pastures under irrigation.     Peningkatan Ketahanan Oksidasi Karet Alam Melalui Pengikatan Antioksidan 4-aminodifenilamina Secara Kimia

    Natural rubber is very important in supporting the Indonesian economy from non-oil sector. However, natural rubber is not resistant to oxidation. Various attempts have been made to overcome the weaknesses; one of them is the addition of antioxidants as additives in the manufacture of rubber goods. However, it has the disadvantage of mechanical technique, including antioxidant blooming, resulting in failed products and decrease in antioxidants ability. The aim of this research is to improve the resistance of natural rubber from oxidation through the chemically-bound antioxidant into epoxidized latex. Fresh latex was deproteinized using 0.06 phr papain. Latex was epoxidized using formic acid and hydrogen peroxide at 70°C with stirring speed of 700 rpm for 3 hours. Then the 4-Aminodiphenylamine (4-ADPA) antioxidant was added with three variations mole percent of 4-ADPA between 0.025 to 0.1 mol/100 grams of rubber, and four variations in temperature were applied (between 27-80°C). The results showed that the optimum condition for the binding was at 27°C at a dose of antioxidants as much as 0.1 mol/100 grams of rubber. The analysis of FTIR spectra revealed that the binding of 4-ADPA into the epoxidized latex was as much as 1.93 phr.     Pemekatan Lateks Kebun Secara Cepat Dengan Proses Sentrifugasi Putaran Rendah

    Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mempelajari kombinasi proses pendadihan dan sentrifugasi, untuk meningkatkan kecepatan pendadihan dengan menggunakan mesin sentrifugasi kecepatan rendah. Lateks pekat adalah salah satu jenis produk komersial dari industri karet dan masih diproduksi oleh pabrik besar, umumnya dibuat dari mesin sentrifugasi yang biaya investasinya mahal. Hal inilah yang menjadi hambatan bagi industri kecil untuk terjun dalam industri lateks pekat. Untuk memproduksi lateks pekat dari lateks kebun dapat dilakukan dengan proses sentrifugasi putaran tinggi (9000-15000 rpm) dan pendadihan. Lateks dadih adalah lateks pekat, dibuat dengan menggunakan bahan pendadih misalnya CMC dan alginat dalam tangki secara batch selama 1-2 minggu dan proses pendadihan ini kecepatan pemisahannya sangat lambat, sehingga membutuhkan waktu yang lama, akibatnya lateks pekat yang diproduksi dengan teknik pendadihan tidak populer di industri. Dalam penelitian ini sebuah mesin sentrifugasi didisain sederhana dan diharapkan layak digunakan oleh industri kecil menengah, digerakkan dengan motor 5 HP dengan kecepatan maksimum 5000 rpm dan mempunyai kapasitas sekitar 5-6 liter lateks kebun. Untuk memproduksi lateks dadih sekitar 5 liter lateks kebun per jam, bahan pendadih CMC ditambahkan ke lateks kebun dengan dosis 0 sampai 0,2%. Waktu sentrifugasi divariasikan selama 0 sampai 60 menit pada kecepatan 5000 rpm. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan, kondisi optimum untuk memperoleh Kadar Karet Kering di atas 60% diperoleh pada dosis CMC hanya 0,1% dengan waktu sentrifugasi selama 45 menit.     Impact of Nab–Paclitaxel-based Second-line Chemotherapy in Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer

    Background: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a lethal malignancy with median survival of 20% at 1 year. We conducted a retrospective study to assess the efficacy and tolerability of nab-paclitaxel (NP)-based second-line chemotherapy in metastatic PDAC. Patients and Methods: The Indiana University Simon Cancer Center pancreatic cancer program was used to identify patients with metastatic PDAC who received any second-line chemotherapy. Demographic, clinical and outcomes data were collected by manual chart abstraction. Patients were divided into two groups: a NP-based treatment group and a non- NP-based treatment group. Overall (OS) and progression-free (PFS) survival were estimated using Kaplan–Meier method. Cox proportional hazards regression was used for multivariate analyses. Results: A total of 120 patients received second-line chemotherapy. There were 47 (39%) patients in the NP group and 73 (61%) in the non-NP group. As compared to the non-NP group, the NP group showed improved median PFS [2.8 vs. 2.1 months; hazard ratio (HR)=0.62, 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.38-1.02; p=0.06] and median OS (7.5 vs. 4.7 months; HR=0.67, 95% CI=0.45-1.00; p=0.05). Multivariate analyses adjusted for age showed a significantly improved PFS (adjusted HR=0.60, 95% CI=0.36-0.98; p=0.04) and a suggestion of improved OS (adjusted HR=0.67, 95% CI=0.44-1.01, p=0.05) in the NP group as compared to non-NP group. Serious adverse events were seen in 13.3% of patients in the non-NP group and 17.1% patients in the NP group. Conclusion: In a single-institution retrospective cohort study, we report a significant improvement in the PFS and suggestion of improvement in the OS with NP-based second-line chemotherapy with an acceptable toxicity rate

    Comparison of Effects of p53 Null and Gain-of-Function Mutations on Salivary Tumors in MMTV-Hras Transgenic Mice

    p53 is an important tumor suppressor gene which is mutated in ~50% of all human cancers. Some of these mutants appear to have acquired novel functions beyond merely losing wild-type functions. To investigate these gain-of-function effects in vivo, we generated mice of three different genotypes: MMTV-Hras/p53+/+, MMTV-Hras/p53-/-, and MMTV-Hras/p53R172H/R172H. Salivary tumors from these mice were characterized with regard to age of tumor onset, tumor growth rates, cell cycle distribution, apoptotic levels, tumor histopathology, as well as response to doxorubicin treatment. Microarray analysis was also performed to profile gene expression. The MMTV-Hras/p53-/- and MMTV-Hras/p53R172H/R172H mice displayed similar properties with regard to age of tumor onset, tumor growth rates, tumor histopathology, and response to doxorubicin, while both groups were clearly distinct from the MMTV-Hras/p53+/+ mice by these measurements. In addition, the gene expression profiles of the MMTV-Hras/p53-/- and MMTV-Hras/p53R172H/R172H tumors were tightly clustered, and clearly distinct from the profiles of the MMTV-Hras/p53+/+ tumors. Only a small group of genes showing differential expression between the MMTV-Hras/p53-/- and MMTV-Hras/p53R172H/R172H tumors, that did not appear to be regulated by wild-type p53, were identified. Taken together, these results indicate that in this MMTV-Hras-driven salivary tumor model, the major effect of the p53 R172H mutant is due to the loss of wild-type p53 function, with little or no gain-of-function effect on tumorigenesis, which may be explained by the tissue- and tumor type-specific properties of this gain-of-function mutant of p53

    Tempeh as a Cultural Heritage in Indonesia: Intergenerational Perception

    This study aimed to assess how people perceive tempeh. The study was conducted using an online self-administered questionnaire among 340 respondents aged between 11 and 58 years. The results showed that respondents perceived tempeh as an Indonesian cultural food (97.70%), a highly nutritious food (99.41%), and a superfood (86.47%), and 51.76% of respondents consumed 50 g of tempeh daily. Most respondents perceived tempeh to have economic impact (91.7%) and used it as a food for celebrations (95.29%), and there was no significant differences between generations (p<0.05). The conclusion is that tempeh is perceived as an Indonesian cultural food that has cultural, economic, and nutritional value

    Harmonic oscillator with nonzero minimal uncertainties in both position and momentum in a SUSYQM framework

    In the context of a two-parameter (α,β)(\alpha, \beta) deformation of the canonical commutation relation leading to nonzero minimal uncertainties in both position and momentum, the harmonic oscillator spectrum and eigenvectors are determined by using techniques of supersymmetric quantum mechanics combined with shape invariance under parameter scaling. The resulting supersymmetric partner Hamiltonians correspond to different masses and frequencies. The exponential spectrum is proved to reduce to a previously found quadratic spectrum whenever one of the parameters α\alpha, β\beta vanishes, in which case shape invariance under parameter translation occurs. In the special case where α=β≠0\alpha = \beta \ne 0, the oscillator Hamiltonian is shown to coincide with that of the q-deformed oscillator with q>1q > 1 and its eigenvectors are therefore nn-qq-boson states. In the general case where 0≠α≠β≠00 \ne \alpha \ne \beta \ne 0, the eigenvectors are constructed as linear combinations of nn-qq-boson states by resorting to a Bargmann representation of the latter and to qq-differential calculus.
