Working together in Dorset to create a lasting legacy among HE students and young people beyond 2012
RELAYS (Regional Educational Legacy in Arts and Youth Sport) is one of the programmes designed to create a positive and lasting legacy beyond 2012. Funded by Legacy Trust UK, an independent charity set up to build a lasting cultural and sporting legacy from the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), it is supported by a range of partners, including 13 of the region’s universities (Universities South West, 2010). Here the partnership formed by the RELAYS School Events Coordinator, and the Events and Sports Management tutors from the School of Services Management at Bournemouth University is described. Through this collaboration, opportunities are being created to enhance the student experience both within the curricula and external to it, throughout the period of study
Deposition of Dorothy Kilgallen Kollmar, New York Journal American Reporter
Deposition statement of New York Journal American Reporter Dorothy Kilgallen Kollmar. She answers Attorney F. Lee Bailey\u27s questions regarding conversations she had with trial Judge Blythin (in chambers) before the trial proceeded. Her statements indicate that Judge Blythin believed the case was open and shut and also his surprise of all the media attention the case brought. Kollmar commented that the case was a good media draw because of the classic mystery surrounding the murder

Black and Hispanic Federal Judges: 1900 to Present
This report shows that in recent years, attention has increasingly focused upon the minority composition of the Federal judiciary, in apparent response to concerns that judges appointed to the Federal bench should more compositely reflect the U.S. population they serve. Two of the larger U.S. subpopulations served by the Federal judiciary are blacks and Hispanics. Accordingly, this mini brief lists chronologically and cumulatively the appointments of blacks and Hispanics to the Federal bench, which includes the U.S.Supreme Court, Circuit Courts of Appeals, and District courts
A Survey of Clergy Practices Associated with Premarital Financial Counseling
The purpose of this exploratory study was to gain an understanding of the state of clergy-led premarital financial counseling. Clergy respondents (n =223) indicated that they often include a financial component in their formal premarital counseling. The most frequently discussed financial topics are budgeting, managing debt and credit, and saving. The most frequently cited obstacles to providing premarital financial counseling are lack of time and lack of subject matter expertise
Views and experiences of visually impaired older people and exercise instructors about the Falls Management Exercise programme: a qualitative study
Purpose: To gain insight into visually impaired older people’s views regarding acceptability of an adapted Falls Management Exercise programme, and to explore Postural Stability Instructors’s perspectives on provision of the programme.
Materials and methods: Data from this qualitative study comprised interviews with nine visually impaired older people and two Postural Stability Instructors. Data were analysed using thematic analysis.
Results: Themes identified from interviews with the participants related to self-perception, exercise-related factors and facilitators to participation. Participants positioned themselves as not old or at risk of falls, felt exercises were not challenging enough and recommended that home exercise materials be offered in individually tailored formats. Themes identified from interviews with the instructors related to programme adaptations for visual impairments, exercises and facilitators to participation. Instructors recommended stratifying groups into levels of ability. Social time after the exercise sessions was deemed key in programme adherence by both participants and instructors.
Conclusions: Visually impaired older people have similar barriers and facilitators to group-based falls prevention sessions as older people without visual impairment, but seem to have more difficulties in motivation to exercise at home. Both participants and instructors felt the main facilitator to adherence to group exercise sessions was the social time

Mapping and validating predictions of soil bacterial biodiversity using European and national scale datasets
Recent research has highlighted strong correlations between soil edaphic parameters and bacterial biodiversity. Here we seek to explore these relationships across the European Union member states with respect to mapping bacterial biodiversity at the continental scale. As part of the EU FP7 EcoFINDERs project, bacterial communities from 76 soil samples taken across Europe were assessed from eleven countries encompassing Arctic to Southern Mediterranean climes, representing a diverse range of soil types and land uses (grassland, forest and arable land). We found predictable relationships between community biodiversity (ordination site scores) and land use factors as well as soil properties such as pH. Based on the modelled relationship between soil pH and bacterial biodiversity found for the surveyed soils, we were able to predict biodiversity in ∼1000 soils for which soil pH data had been collected as part of national scale monitoring. We then performed interpolative mapping utilising existing EU wide soil pH data to present the first map of bacterial biodiversity across the EU member states. The predictive accuracy of the map was assessed again using the national scale data, but this time contrasting the EU wide spatial predictions with point data on bacterial communities. Generally the maps were useful at predicting broad extremes of biodiversity reflective of low or high pH soils, though predictive accuracy was limited for Britain particularly for organic/acidic soil communities. Spatial accuracy could however be increased by utilising published maps of soil pH calculated using geostatistical approaches at both global and national scales. These findings will contribute to wider efforts to predict and understand the spatial distribution of soil biodiversity at global scales. Further work should focus on enhancing the predictive power of such maps, by harmonising global datasets on soil conditioning parameters, soil properties and biodiversity; and the continued efforts to advance the geostatistical modelling of specific components of soil biodiversity at local to global scales
Self-directed multimodal learning in higher education
This book aims to provide an overview of theoretical and practical considerations in terms of self-directed multimodal learning within the university context. Multimodal learning is approached in terms of the levels of multimodality and specifically blended learning and the mixing of modes of delivery (contact and distance education). As such, this publication will provide a unique snapshot of multimodal practices within higher education through a self-directed learning epistemological lens. The book covers issues such as what self-directed multimodal learning entails, mapping of specific publications regarding blended learning, blended learning in mathematics, geography, natural science and computer literacy, comparative experiences in distance education as well as situated and culturally appropriate learning in multimodal contexts. This book provides a unique focus on multimodality in terms of learning and delivery within the context of self-directed learning. Therefore, the publication would not only advance the scholarship of blended and open distance learning in South Africa, but also the contribute to enriching the discourse regarding self-direction. From this book readers will get an impression of the latest trends in literature in terms of multimodal self-directed learning in South Africa as well as unique empirical work being done in this regard
Non-Fasting High-Density Lipoprotein Is Associated With White Matter Microstructure in Healthy Older Adults
A growing body of evidence indicates that biomarkers of cardiovascular risk may be related to cerebral health. However, little is known about the role that non-fasting lipoproteins play in assessing age-related declines in a cerebral biomarker sensitive to vascular compromise, white matter (WM) microstructure. High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) is atheroprotective and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is a major atherogenic lipoprotein. This study explored the relationships between non-fasting levels of cholesterol and WM microstructure in healthy older adults. A voxelwise and region of interest approach was used to determine the relationship between cholesterol and fractional anisotropy (FA). Participants included 87 older adults between the ages of 59 and 77 (mean age = 65.5 years, SD = 3.9). Results indicated that higher HDL-C was associated with higher FA in diffuse regions of the brain when controlling for age, sex, and body mass index (BMI). HDL-C was also positively associated with FA in the corpus callosum and fornix. No relationship was observed between LDL-C and FA. Findings suggest that a modifiable lifestyle variable associated with cardiovascular health may help to preserve cerebral WM
