As an informational technology, the World Wide Web has enjoyed spectacular success. In just ten years it has transformed the way information is produced, stored, and shared in arenas as diverse as shopping, family photo albums, and high-level academic research. The “Semantic Web” was touted by its developers as equally revolutionary but has not yet achieved anything like the Web’s exponential uptake. This 17 000 word survey article explores why this might be so, from a perspective that bridges both philosophy and IT

A parametric study on the effectiveness of the NSM technique for the flexural strengthening of continuous RC slabs

    Get PDF
Recent experimental research has shown that Near Surface Mounted (NSM) technique has high potential to increase the load carrying capacity of continuous reinforced concrete (RC) slabs. This flexural strengthening technique is based on the installation of rectangular cross sectional carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates into thin slits opened onto the top concrete cover at the intermediate supports and in the bottom concrete cover in the tensile zones. However, the linear-elastic behaviour of the CFRP laminates, and the possibility of occurring premature detachment of the concrete cover that includes these laminates can compromise, not only the flexural strengthening effectiveness of the NSM technique, but also the moment redistribution and the ductility performance of this type of structures. To evaluate the influence of the concrete strength class, the percentage of existing longitudinal tensile reinforcement and the percentage of CFRP on the strengthening effectiveness, moment redistribution capacity and ductility performance, a parametric study was carried out by executing material nonlinear analysis with a FEM-based computer program, which predictive performance was calibrated using the results of a previous experimental program. The study reported in this paper forms part of the research program "PrePAM -Pre-Fabricated Thin Panels Using Advanced Materials For Structural Rehabilitation" supported by FCT, PTDC/ECM/114511/2009. The authors also wish to acknowledge the support provided by the S&P and Casais. The first author further wishes to acknowledge the Erasmus Mobility Program between the University of Minho (Portugal) and the University of Ferrara (Italy), which rendered this international cooperation possible. In the title complex, [Co(C26H20N2O4)(NCS)]·C4H10O·CH2Cl2, the pentacoordinated CoIII atom exhibits a distorted square-pyramidal geometry with an N,N′,O,O′ tetradentate Schiff base ligand in the basal plane and one thiocyanate ligand at the apical site. The diethyl ether molecule is located in a cavity provided by four O atoms of the ligand with weak C—H⋯O interactions, generating two short O⋯O contact distances [2.766 (3) and 2.745 (3) Å] between the diethyl ether molecule and the ligand. The crystal structure is stabilized by the weak C—H⋯O and C—H⋯N interactions and π–π interactions between the naphthyl ring system and the benzene ring [centroid–centroid distance = 3.657 (5) Å] and between the two naphthyl ring systems [centroid–centroid distance = 4.305 (2) Å]

(Meta-)stable reconstructions of the diamond(111) surface: interplay between diamond- and graphite-like bonding

    Get PDF
Off-lattice Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations of the clean diamond (111) surface, based on the effective many-body Brenner potential, yield the (2×1)(2\times1) Pandey reconstruction in agreement with \emph{ab-initio} calculations and predict the existence of new meta-stable states, very near in energy, with all surface atoms in three-fold graphite-like bonding. We believe that the long-standing debate on the structural and electronic properties of this surface could be solved by considering this type of carbon-specific configurations.Comment: 4 pages + 4 figures, Phys. Secondary prevention of coronary artery disease in Poland : results from the POLASPIRE survey

    Get PDF
Background: The highest priority in preventive cardiology is given to patients with established coronary artery disease (CAD). The aim of the study was to assess the current implementation of the guidelines for secondary prevention in everyday clinical practice by evaluating control of the main risk factors and the cardioprotective medication prescription rates in patients following hospitalization for CAD. Methods: Fourteen departments of cardiology participated in the study. Patients (aged <= 80 years) hospitalized due an acute coronary syndrome or for a myocardial revascularization procedure were recruited and interviewed 6-18 months after the hospitalization. Results: Overall, 947 patients were examined 6-18 months after lwspitalization. The proportion of patients with high blood pressure (>= 140/90 mmHg) was 42%, with high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C >= 1.8 mmol/L) 62%, and with high fasting glucose (>= 7.0 mmol/L) 22%, 17% of participants were smokers and 42% were obese. The proportion of atients taking an antiplatelet agent 6-18 months after hospitalization was 93%, beta-blacker 89%, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor or sartan 86%, and a lipid-lowering drug 90%. Only 2.3% patients had controlled all the five main risk factors well (non-smoking, blood pressure < 140190 mmHg, LDL-C < 1.8 mmoIlL and glucose < 7.0 mmoilL, body mass index < 25 kg/m(2)), while 179% had 1 out of 5, 40.9% had 2 out of 5, and 29% had 3 out of 5 risk factors uncontrolled. Conclusions: The documented multicenter survey provides evidence that there is considerable potential for further reductions of cardiovascular risk in CAD patients in Poland. A revision of the state funded cardiac prevention programs seems rational
