Temporal dynamics of spectral reflectance and vegetation indices during canola crop cycle in southern Brazil
The objective of this study was to characterize the variability of spectral reflectance and temporal profiles of vegetation indices
associated with nitrogen fertilization, crop cycle periods, and weather conditions of the growing season in canola canopies in southern Brazil. An
experiment was carried out during the 2013 and 2014 canola growing seasons at EMBRAPA Trigo, Passo Fundo, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.
The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with four replications. Five doses of nitrogen top dressing were used as treatments:
10, 20, 40, 80, and 160kg ha-1. Measurements were obtained with the spectroradiometer positioned above the canopy, to construct spectral
reflectance curves for canola and establish temporal profiles for several vegetation indices (SR, NDVI, EVI, SAVI, and GNDVI). In addition, data
on shoot dry matter were obtained and phenological stages were determined. The spectral reflectance curves of canola were reported to change
with canopy growth and development. Temporal profiles of vegetation indices showed two maximum peaks, one before flowering and other after
flowering. The indices SR, NDVI, EVI, SAVI, and GNDVI were able to characterize changes in the canola canopy over time, as a function of
phenological phases, weather conditions, and nitrogen fertilization, throughout the development cycle. Plant growth and development, variations
in crop management, and environmental conditions affect the spectral response of canol
Predictors of response to TNF blockers in patients with polyarticular psoriatic arthritis
Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a chronic inflammatory
rheumatic disease with a broad clinical spectrum. PsA
can affect the axialskeleton, peripheral joints, entheses,
synovial sheaths of tendons, skin, nails and extra-articular
organs. Tumour necrosis factor alpha blockers
(TNF blockers) were a breakthrough development in
the treatment of PsA. Identifying predictors of response
to biological therapiesin patients with PsA is of utmost
importance, especially in view of the costs and potential
side effects of these agents. The aims of the present
study were to determine baseline predictive factors of
response to biological therapies, at 3 and 6 months, in
PsA patients with polyarticular involvement (with or
without axial involvement). Data were collected from
the RheumaticDiseases Portuguese Register(Reuma.pt).
Eligible patients had to be anti-TNF-naive at baseline
and to have at least 3 months of follow-up after the beginning
of TNF blocker therapy. Only patients with information
on at least one of the response measures (at
3 or 6 months of follow-up) were included in the analysis.
Univariable logistic regression analysis of potential
baseline predictors of European League Against Rheu-matism (EULAR) good clinical response, EULAR good/
/moderate response, 28-joint Disease Activity Score
with three variables including the erythrocyte sedimentation
rate (DAS28-3V-ESR) remission and Health
Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) response were performed.
Multivariable logistic regression using a forward
selection procedure was used until the best-fit
model was obtained, taking confounding effects into
account. A total of 180 patients were eligible for the
study (mean age 52 years, 54% women). In multivariable
analysis at 3 months, females were less likely to attain
a good EULAR response [OR=0.082 (95%
CI=0.024, 0.278)], a DAS28-3V-ESR remission
[OR=0.083 (95% CI=0.017, 0.416)], a moderate or
good EULAR response [OR=0.091 (95% CI=0.011,
0.091)] and a HAQ response [OR=0.074 (95%
CI=0.009, 0.608)]. At 6 months, female gender was
also less likely to achieve a good EULAR response
[OR=0.060 (95% CI=0.011, 0.325)], DAS28-3V-ESR
remission [OR=0.060 (95% CI=0.012, 0.297)], and a
HAQ response [OR=0.138 (95% CI= 0.029, 0.654)]. In
this study we found that gender was the most consistent
predictor of response to TNF blocker therapy in
patients with polyarticular PsA, with females having a
lower probability ofresponse compared to males. These
findings suggest that gender-related biochemical, hormonal
and psychological factors could play an importantrole
in the response to TNF blockertherapy in PsA
Increased CK5/CK8-Positive Intermediate Cells with Stromal Smooth Muscle Cell Atrophy in the Mice Lacking Prostate Epithelial Androgen Receptor
Results from tissue recombination experiments documented well that stromal androgen receptor (AR) plays essential roles in prostate development, but epithelial AR has little roles in prostate development. Using cell specific knockout AR strategy, we generated pes-ARKO mouse with knock out of AR only in the prostate epithelial cells and demonstrated that epithelial AR might also play important roles in the development of prostate gland. We found mice lacking the prostate epithelial AR have increased apoptosis in epithelial CK8-positive luminal cells and increased proliferation in epithelial CK5-positive basal cells. The consequences of these two contrasting results could then lead to the expansion of CK5/CK8-positive intermediate cells, accompanied by stromal atrophy and impaired ductal morphogenesis. Molecular mechanism dissection found AR target gene, TGF-β1, might play important roles in this epithelial AR-to-stromal morphogenesis modulation. Collectively, these results provided novel information relevant to epithelial AR functions in epithelial-stromal interactions during the development of normal prostate, and suggested AR could also function as suppressor in selective cells within prostate
Human α2β1HI CD133+VE epithelial prostate stem cells express low levels of active androgen receptor
Stem cells are thought to be the cell of origin in malignant transformation in many tissues, but their role in human prostate carcinogenesis continues to be debated. One of the conflicts with this model is that cancer stem cells have been described to lack androgen receptor (AR) expression, which is of established importance in prostate cancer initiation and progression. We re-examined the expression patterns of AR within adult prostate epithelial differentiation using an optimised sensitive and specific approach examining transcript, protein and AR regulated gene expression. Highly enriched populations were isolated consisting of stem (α(2)β(1)(HI) CD133(+VE)), transiently amplifying (α(2)β(1)(HI) CD133(-VE)) and terminally differentiated (α(2)β(1)(LOW) CD133(-VE)) cells. AR transcript and protein expression was confirmed in α(2)β(1)(HI) CD133(+VE) and CD133(-VE) progenitor cells. Flow cytometry confirmed that median (±SD) fraction of cells expressing AR were 77% (±6%) in α(2)β(1)(HI) CD133(+VE) stem cells and 68% (±12%) in α(2)β(1)(HI) CD133(-VE) transiently amplifying cells. However, 3-fold lower levels of total AR protein expression (peak and median immunofluorescence) were present in α(2)β(1)(HI) CD133(+VE) stem cells compared with differentiated cells. This finding was confirmed with dual immunostaining of prostate sections for AR and CD133, which again demonstrated low levels of AR within basal CD133(+VE) cells. Activity of the AR was confirmed in prostate progenitor cells by the expression of low levels of the AR regulated genes PSA, KLK2 and TMPRSS2. The confirmation of AR expression in prostate progenitor cells allows integration of the cancer stem cell theory with the established models of prostate cancer initiation based on a functional AR. Further study of specific AR functions in prostate stem and differentiated cells may highlight novel mechanisms of prostate homeostasis and insights into tumourigenesis
An ALMA/NOEMA survey of the molecular gas properties of high-redshift star-forming galaxies
We have used ALMA and NOEMA to study the molecular gas reservoirs in 61 ALMA-identified submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) in the COSMOS, UDS, and ECDFS fields. We detect 12CO (Jup= 2–5) emission lines in 50 sources, and [C I](3P1 − 3P0) emission in eight, at z= 1.2–4.8 and with a median redshift of 2.9 ± 0.2. By supplementing our data with literature sources, we construct a statistical CO spectral line energy distribution and find that the 12CO line luminosities in SMGs peak at Jup ∼ 6, consistent with similar studies. We also test the correlations of the CO, [C I], and dust as tracers of the gas mass, finding the three to correlate well, although the CO and dust mass as estimated from the 3-mm continuum are preferable. We estimate that SMGs lie mostly on or just above the star-forming main sequence, with a median gas depletion timescale, tdep = Mgas/SFR, of 210 ± 40 Myr for our sample. Additionally, tdep declines with redshift across z ∼ 1–5, while the molecular gas fraction, μgas = Mgas/M*, increases across the same redshift range. Finally, we demonstrate that the distribution of total baryonic mass and dynamical line width, Mbaryon–σ, for our SMGs is consistent with that followed by early-type galaxies in the Coma cluster, providing strong support to the suggestion that SMGs are progenitors of massive local spheroidal galaxies. On the basis of this, we suggest that the SMG populations above and below an 870-μm flux limit of S870 ∼ 5 mJy may correspond to the division between slow and fast rotators seen in local early-type galaxies

Enhancement of PLA-PVA surface adhesion in bilayer assemblies by PLA aminolisation
Data Availability: The raw/processed data required to reproduce these
findings cannot be shared at this time due to legal or ethical reasons.Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) present complementary barrier properties, and their combination in multilayer assemblies (laminates) could provide materials with more effective barrier capacity for food packaging purposes. However, their low chemical affinity compromises adequate polymer adhesion. Surface free energy modification of thermo-processed PLA films through treatment with 1,6-hexanediamine was used to enhance adhesion with polar PVA aqueous solutions. Treatments of 1 and 3 min increased the polar component of the solid surface tension, while treatments above 10 min provoked a corrosive effect in the films structure. Extensibility analyses of PVA solutions loaded with carvacrol (15 wt.%) and different Tween 85 ratios on PLA-activated surfaces allowed the selection of the 1-min aminolysed surface for obtaining PLA-PVA bilayers, by casting PVA solutions on the PLA films. This study revealed that despite aminolisation enhancing the PLA surface affinity for aqueous PVA solutions, casting-obtained bilayers presented limited oxygen barrier effectiveness due to heterogeneous thickness of PVA layer in the laminates. The authors acknowledge the financial support provided by the Ministerio de Economia y Competitividad (MINECO) of Spain (project AGL2016-76699-R). Spatial distribution of Schistosoma mansoni infection before and after chemotherapy with two praziquantel doses in a community of Pernambuco, Brazil
Praziquantel chemotherapy has been the focus of the Schistosomiasis Control Program in Brazil for the past two decades. Nevertheless, information on the impact of selective chemotherapy against Schistosoma mansoni infection under the conditions confronted by the health teams in endemic municipalities remains scarce. This paper compares the spatial pattern of infection before and after treatment with either a 40 mg/kg or 60 mg/kg dose of praziquantel by determining the intensity of spatial cluster among patients at 180 and 360 days after treatment. The spatial-temporal distribution of egg-positive patients was analysed in a Geographic Information System using the kernel smoothing technique. While all patients became egg-negative after 21 days, 17.9% and 30.9% reverted to an egg-positive condition after 180 and 360 days, respectively. Both the prevalence and intensity of infection after treatment were significantly lower in the 60 mg/kg than in the 40 mg/kg treatment group. The higher intensity of the kernel in the 40 mg/kg group compared to the 60 mg/kg group, at both 180 and 360 days, reflects the higher number of reverted cases in the lower dose group. Auxiliary, preventive measures to control transmission should be integrated with chemotherapy to achieve a more enduring impact
Systemic 7-methylxanthine in retarding axial eye growth and myopia progression: a 36-month pilot study
The adenosine antagonist 7-methylxanthine (7-mx) works against myopia in animal models. In a clinical trial, 68 myopic children (mean age 11.3 years) received either placebo or 7-mx tablets for 12 months. All participants subsequently received 7-mx for another 12 months, after which treatment was stopped. Axial length was measured with Zeiss IOL-Master and cycloplegic refraction with Nikon Retinomax at −6, 0, 12, 24, and 36 months. Axial growth was reduced among children treated with 7-mx for 24 months compared with those only treated for the last 12 months. Myopia progression and axial eye growth slowed down in periods with 7-mx treatment, but when the treatment was stopped, both myopia progression and axial eye growth continued with invariable speed. The results indicate that 7-mx reduces eye elongation and myopia progression in childhood myopia. The treatment is safe and without side effects and may be continued until 18–20 years of age when myopia progression normally stops
