    Probabilistic graphical techniques for automated ice-bottom tracking and comparison between state-of-the-art solutions

    We present improvements to existing frameworks for automated extraction of ice interfaces applied to two-dimensional and three-dimensional radar echograms of polar ice sheets. These improvements consist of novel image pre-processing steps and empirically-derived cost functions that allow for the integration of further domain-specific knowledge into the models employed. Along with an explanation of our modifications, we demonstrate the results obtained by our proposed models and algorithms, such as a 43% decrease in mean tracking error in the case of three-dimensional imagery. We also present the results obtained by several state-of-the-art ice-interface tracking solutions, and compare all automated results with manually-corrected ground-truth data. Furthermore, we perform a self-assessment of tracking results by analyzing the differences found between the automatically extracted ice-layers in cases where two separate radar measurements have been made at the same location

    The sub-energetic GRB 031203 as a cosmic analogue to GRB 980425

    Over the six years since the discovery of the gamma-ray burst GRB 980425, associated with the nearby (distance, ~40 Mpc) supernova 1998bw, astronomers have fiercely debated the nature of this event. Relative to bursts located at cosmological distances, (redshift, z~1), GRB 980425 was under-luminous in gamma-rays by three orders of magnitude. Radio calorimetry showed the explosion was sub-energetic by a factor of 10. Here, we report observations of the radio and X-ray afterglow of the recent z=0.105 GRB 031203 and demonstrate that it too is sub-energetic. Our result, when taken together with the low gamma-ray luminosity, suggest that GRB 031203 is the first cosmic analogue to GRB 980425. We find no evidence that this event was a highly collimated explosion viewed off-axis. Like GRB 980425, GRB 031203 appears to be an intrinsically sub-energetic gamma-ray burst. Such sub-energetic events have faint afterglows. Intensive follow-up of faint bursts with smooth gamma-ray light curves (common to both GRBs 031203 and 980425) may enable us to reveal their expected large population.Comment: To Appear in Nature, August 5, 200

    International audienceAbstractNewly emerged virgin queens are frequently imprisoned in cages either inside or outside of colonies before delivery to a new hive. Ovary integrity and proper functioning is the primary factor in a queen’s success as the colony mother. In this work, histological studies on ovaries are used to evaluate the effect of virgin queen imprisonment both out and inside the colony. The results show that the ovarian follicles of virgin queens maintained out of the colony advance only until the beginning of differentiation of oocytes and nurse cells, the vitellarium does not differentiate, and cell death is observed. For virgin queens caged inside a colony, oogenesis progresses until nurse cell and oocyte differentiation is completed, and the vitellarium shows initial differentiation. The results suggest that the best method for a head start of a queen’s fertility is to maintain her inside the colony until introduction into a new hive

    Slow movement of a random walk on the range of a random walk in the presence of an external field

    In this article, a localisation result is proved for the biased random walk on the range of a simple random walk in high dimensions (d \geq 5). This demonstrates that, unlike in the supercritical percolation setting, a slowdown effect occurs as soon a non-trivial bias is introduced. The proof applies a decomposition of the underlying simple random walk path at its cut-times to relate the associated biased random walk to a one-dimensional random walk in a random environment in Sinai's regime

    Critical hysteresis in ferromagnets is investigated through a NN-component spin model with random anisotropies, more prevalent experimentally than the random fields used in most theoretical studies. Metastability, and the tensorial nature of anisotropy, dictate its physics. Generically, random field Ising criticality occurs, but other universality classes exist. In particular, proximity to O(N)\mathcal{O}(N) criticality may explain the discrepancy between experiment and earlier theories.     Spin Wave Excitation in Magnetic Insulator Thin Films by Spin-Transfer Torque

    We describe excitation of dipole-exchange spin waves in insulating magnetic thin films by spin current injection at the surface of the film. An easy-axis magnetic surface anisotropy can induce a non-chiral surface spin wave mode with penetration depth inversely proportional to the strength of the surface anisotropy, which strongly reduces the critical current and enhances the excitation power. The importance of the interface spin wave modes on the excitation spectrum is reduced by spin pumping, which depends on the quality of the interface as expressed by the spin mixing conductance.Comment: 19 pages, 10 figure

    Complex Independent Component Analysis of Frequency-Domain Electroencephalographic Data

    Independent component analysis (ICA) has proven useful for modeling brain and electroencephalographic (EEG) data. Here, we present a new, generalized method to better capture the dynamics of brain signals than previous ICA algorithms. We regard EEG sources as eliciting spatio-temporal activity patterns, corresponding to, e.g., trajectories of activation propagating across cortex. This leads to a model of convolutive signal superposition, in contrast with the commonly used instantaneous mixing model. In the frequency-domain, convolutive mixing is equivalent to multiplicative mixing of complex signal sources within distinct spectral bands. We decompose the recorded spectral-domain signals into independent components by a complex infomax ICA algorithm. First results from a visual attention EEG experiment exhibit (1) sources of spatio-temporal dynamics in the data, (2) links to subject behavior, (3) sources with a limited spectral extent, and (4) a higher degree of independence compared to sources derived by standard ICA.Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures.     PROCESS OF INSERTION, MAINTENANCE AND REMOVAL OF PERIPHERAL INTRAVENOUS CATHETERS: PREVENTIVE RISK ANALYSIS

    Objective: to demonstrate the applicability of the Healthcare Failure Mode and Effect Analysis tool to analyze, preventively, the risks related to the process of insertion, maintenance, and removal of peripheral intravenous catheters.Method: theoretical study, conducted from August to November 2022, in SĂŁo Paulo-SP, Brazil, whose process was mapped in stages/activities, detailing the failure modes, using the tool. The Risk Priority Number was calculated, the severity and probability matrix was elaborated, adapted to health by DeRosier and collaborators, and actions were proposed to reduce failure modes.Results: The major risks identified were: "perform antisepsis of the area to be punctured with an alcohol swab" and "disinfect the connector with an alcohol swab", and were recommended training and use of kit materials as the main mitigation strategies.Conclusion: knowing the risks associated with peripheral intravenous catheters is the basis for the implementation of preventive strategies, minimizing the occurrence of damage and the associated healthcare costs
