Strawberry fruit resistance to simulated handling

    Get PDF
Harvest operations are currently the main source of mechanical injury of strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.). Experiments were designed to simulate conditions encountered during commercial handling. Individual fruits were subjected to impact or compression forces with similar energy to determine the sensitivity to mechanical injury. Bruise volume was used as the measurement of injury. Bruise severity increased as a function of impact energy for both impact types. However, dropped fruits had larger bruise volume than fruits submitted to pendulum impactor at the same energy level. Doubling the impact energy (0.040 to 0.083 J) increased bruise volume by 7 times (13 to 91 mm³). Fruits dropped from 380 mm (0.075 J) showed 71% greater bruise volume than those dropped from either 130 mm (0.025 J) or 200 mm (0.040 J). Compressed fruits showed higher bruise volume than other tests. Some cultivars are more susceptible to compression forces than others. 'Sweet Charlie' berries showed bruise volume 40% higher than the others cultivars when subjected to compression. Fruits subjected to impact showed bruise volume lower than the compressed fruits, indicating the possibility to be handled and graded in a packing line.

Lifetime Differences, direct CP Violation and Partial Widths in D0 Meson Decays to K+K- and pi+pi-

We describe several measurements using the decays D0->K+K- and pi+pi-. We find the ratio of partial widths, Gamma(D0->K+K-)/Gamma(D0->pi+pi-), to be 2.96+/-0.16+/-0.15, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. We observe no evidence for direct CP violation, obtaining A_CP(KK) = (0.0+/-2.2+/-0.8)% and A_CP(pipi = (1.9+/-3.2+/-0.8)%. In the limit of no CP violation we measure the mixing parameter y_CP = -0.012+/-0.025+/-0.014 by measuring the lifetime difference between D0->K+ K- or pi+pi- and the CP neutral state, D0->K-pi+. We see no evidence for mixing.Comment: 14 pages postscript, also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLNS, submitted to PRD, Rapid Communicatio

Measurement of the Mass Splittings between the bbˉχb,J(1P)b\bar{b}\chi_{b,J}(1P) States

We present new measurements of photon energies and branching fractions for the radiative transitions: Upsilon(2S)->gamma+chi_b(J=0,1,2). The masses of the chi_b states are determined from the measured radiative photon energies. The ratio of mass splittings between the chi_b substates, r==(M[J=2]-M[J=1])/(M[J=1]-M[J=0]) with M the chi_b mass, provides information on the nature of the bbbar confining potential. We find r(1P)=0.54+/-0.02+/-0.02. This value is in conflict with the previous world average, but more consistent with the theoretical expectation that r(1P)<r(2P); i.e., that this mass splittings ratio is smaller for the chi_b(1P) triplet than for the chi_b(2P) triplet.Comment: 11 page postscript file, postscript file also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLN

K-Shell photodetachment of Li−: Experiment and theory

We have measured the first and second moments of the hadronic mass-squared distribution in B→Xclv, for Plepton>1.5 GeV/c. We find(MX 2−MD −2)= 0.251 ± 0.66 GeV2,((MX 2−MX 2)2)=0.576 ± 0.170 GeV4, where M¯ Dis the spin-averaged D meson mass. From that first moment and the first moment of the photon energy spectrum in b→s γ, we find the heavy quark effective theory parameter λ1(in the modified minimal subtraction renormalization scheme, to order 1/MB 3and γ0αs 2) to be −0.24±0.11GeV2. Using these first moments and the B semileptonic width, and assuming parton-hadron duality, we obtain|Vcb|=0.0404±0.0013

Improved upper limits on the flavor-changing neutral current decays B→Kℓ+ℓ- and B→K*(892)ℓ+ℓ-

We have searched a sample of 9.6×106 B¯B events for the flavor-changing neutral current decays B→Kℓ+ℓ- and B→K*(892)ℓ+ℓ-. We subject the latter decay to the requirement that the dilepton mass mℓℓ exceed 0.5 GeV. There is no indication of a signal. We obtain the 90% confidence level upper limits B(B→Kℓ+ℓ-) 0.5Gev0.5Gev < 1.5×10-6. The weighted-average limit is only 50% above the standard model prediction

A probable oligochaete from an Early Triassic Lagerstatte of the southern Cis-Urals and its evolutionary implications

    No full text
Oligochaetes, despite their important role in terrestrial ecosystems and a tremendous biomass, are extremely rare fossils. The palaeontological record of these worms is restricted to some cocoons, presumable trace fossils and a few body fossils the most convincing of which are discovered in Mesozoic and Cenozoic strata. The Olenekian (Lower Triassic) siliciclastic lacustrine Petropavlovka Lagerstätte of the southern Cis-Urals yields a number of extraordinary freshwater fossils including an annelid. The segmented body with a secondary annulation of this fossil, a subtriangular prostomium, a relatively thick layered body wall and, possibly, the presence of a genital region point to its oligochaete affinities. Other fossil worms which have been ascribed to clitellates are reviewed and, with a tentative exception of two Pennsylvanian finds, affinities of any pre-Mesozoic forms to clitellate annelids are rejected. The new fossil worm allows tracing of a persuasive oligochaete record to the lowermost Mesozoic and confirms a plausibility of the origin of this annelid group in freshwater conditions
