    TNOs are cool: a survey of the transneptunian region

    Over one thousand objects have so far been discovered orbiting beyond Neptune. These trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) represent the primitive remnants of the planetesimal disk from which the planets formed and are perhaps analogous to the unseen dust parent-bodies in debris disks observed around other main-sequence stars. The dynamical and physical properties of these bodies provide unique and important constraints on formation and evolution models of the Solar System. While the dynamical architecture in this region (also known as the Kuiper Belt) is becoming relatively clear, the physical properties of the objects are still largely unexplored. In particular, fundamental parameters such as size, albedo, density and thermal properties are difficult to measure. Measurements of thermal emission, which peaks at far-IR wavelengths, offer the best means available to determine the physical properties. While Spitzer has provided some results, notably revealing a large albedo diversity in this population, the increased sensitivity of Herschel and its superior wavelength coverage should permit profound advances in the field. Within our accepted project we propose to perform radiometric measurements of 139 objects, including 25 known multiple systems. When combined with measurements of the dust population beyond Neptune (e.g. from the New Horizons mission to Pluto), our results will provide a benchmark for understanding the Solar debris disk, and extra-solar ones as well

    The Future of Psychopharmacological Enhancements: Expectations and Policies

    The hopes and fears expressed in the debate on human enhancement are not always based on a realistic assessment of the expected possibilities. Discussions about extreme scenarios may at times obscure the ethical and policy issues that are relevant today. This paper aims to contribute to an adequate and ethically sound societal response to actual current developments. After a brief outline of the ethical debate concerning neuro-enhancement, it describes the current state of the art in psychopharmacological science and current uses of psychopharmacological enhancement, as well as the prospects for the near future. It then identifies ethical issues regarding psychopharmacological enhancements that require attention from policymakers, both on the professional and on the governmental level. These concern enhancement research, the gradual expansion of medical categories, off-label prescription and responsibility of doctors, and accessibility of enhancers on the Internet. It is concluded that further discussion on the advantages and drawbacks of enhancers on a collective social level is still needed

    Synthetic prions with novel strain-specified properties

    Prions are infectious proteins that possess multiple self-propagating structures. The information for strains and structural specific barriers appears to be contained exclusively in the folding of the pathological isoform, PrP(Sc). Many recent studies determined that de novo prion strains could be generated in vitro from the structural conversion of recombinant (rec) prion protein (PrP) into amyloidal structures. Our aim was to elucidate the conformational diversity of pathological recPrP amyloids and their biological activities, as well as to gain novel insights in characterizing molecular events involved in mammalian prion conversion and propagation. To this end we generated infectious materials that possess different conformational structures. Our methodology for the prion conversion of recPrP required only purified rec full-length mouse (Mo) PrP and common chemicals. Neither infected brain extracts nor amplified PrP(Sc) were used. Following two different in vitro protocols recMoPrP converted to amyloid fibrils without any seeding factor. Mouse hypothalamic GT1 and neuroblastoma N2a cell lines were infected with these amyloid preparations as fast screening methodology to characterize the infectious materials. Remarkably, a large number of amyloid preparations were able to induce the conformational change of endogenous PrPC to harbor several distinctive proteinase-resistant PrP forms.     16S rDNA analysis of bacterial communities associated with the hyper accumulator Arabidopsis halleri grown on a Zn and Cd polluted soil

    International audienceHaving a glimpse of the relationships between the zinc and cadmium hyper accumulator Arabidopsis halleri and its rhizospheric bacteria may represent an interesting step towards the implementation of a rhizoremediation strategy based on this plant. Until now, these relationships remained unraveled. This work aimed to give some insights into the composition of the bacterial communities surrounding A. halleri when it grows on a soil harboring elevated amounts of zinc and cadmium, as well as into the influence that plant roots may exert on them. Industrial highly polluted soils containing different amounts of zinc and cadmium and surrounding A. halleri plants were sampled and their bacterial contents were harvested at various distances from A. halleri root system. Genetic diversity was assessed through DNA extraction, PCR amplification, 16S rDNA libraries construction, RFLP analysis and partial sequencing. Nine mini-libraries of hundred clones each were established and analyzed. Up to 481 independent clones were sequenced and identified at genus level. Twelve genera among 48 were found particularly well represented in the different sub-fractions analyzed. At class level, ten different classes were identified. Alpha-proteobacteria, Gamma-proteobacteria, Flavobacteria and Sphingobacteria were the main contributors to flora diversity. In the less polluted soil, roots proximity seems to affect negatively Alpha-proteobacteria and Flavobacteria and positively Gamma-proteobacteria.     Validating the sensitivity of inhomogeneous magnetization transfer (ihMT) MRI to myelin with fluorescence microscopy

    International audienceInhomogeneous Magnetization Transfer (ihMT) is a development from the MT MRI technique. IhMT can be considered as a dipolar order relaxation time (T1D) weighted imaging modality whose signal has shown an enhanced selectivity for myelin-rich structures. However, a formal validation of the ihMT sensitivity relative to a gold standard myelin density measurement has not yet been reported. To address this need, we compared ihMT MRI with green fluorescence protein (GFP) microscopy, in a study performed on genetically-modified plp-GFP mice, considered as a reference technique for myelin-content assessment. Various ihMT protocols consisting of variable T1D-filtering and radiofrequency power temporal distributions, were used for comparison with fluores- cence microscopy. Strong and significant linear relationships (r2 (0.87–0.96), p < 0.0001) were found between GFP and ihMT ratio signals across brain regions for all tested protocol variants. Conventional MT ratios showed weaker correlations (r2 (0.24–0.78), p 0.02) and a much larger signal fraction unrelated to myelin, hence corresponding to a much lower specificity for myelin. T1D-filtering reduced the ihMT signal fraction not attributed to myelin by almost twofold relative to zero filtering suggesting that at least half of the unrelated signal has a substantially shorter T1D than myelin.     Mangrove ecosystem properties regulate high water levels in a river delta

    Intertidal wetlands, such as mangroves in the tropics, are increasingly recognized for their role in nature-based mitigation of coastal flood risks. Yet it is still poorly understood how effective they are at attenuating the propagation of extreme sea levels through large (order of 100 km2) estuarine or deltaic systems, with complex geometry formed by networks of branching channels intertwined with mangrove and intertidal flat areas. Here, we present a delta-scale hydrodynamic modelling study, aiming to explicitly account for these complex landforms, for the case of the Guayas delta (Ecuador), the largest estuarine system on the Pacific coast of Latin America. Despite coping with data scarcity, our model accurately reproduces the observed propagation of high water levels during a spring tide. Further, based on a model sensitivity analysis, we show that high water levels are most sensitive to the mangrove platform elevation and degree of channelization but to a much lesser extent to vegetation-induced friction. Mangroves with a lower surface elevation, lower vegetation density, and higher degree of channelization all favour a more efficient flooding of the mangroves and therefore more effectively attenuate the high water levels in the deltaic channels. Our findings indicate that vast areas of channelized mangrove forests, rather than densely vegetated forests, are most effective for nature-based flood risk mitigation in a river delta.Physical and Space Geodes

    Range-edge populations of seaweeds show niche unfilling and poor adaptation to increased temperatures

Here, we assess the thermal tolerance of populations of two habitat-forming seaweeds along their latitudinal range, using thermal niche unfilling to assess their resilience to global warming. Location: European Atlantic coastline. Taxon: Ascophyllum nodosum (Linnaeus) Le Jolis (Phaeophyceae) and Chondrus crispus Stackhouse (Rhodophyta). Methods: We studied the ecotypic variation in upper survival temperatures (USTs) by measuring survival and growth of adults representing populations under a gradient of seawater temperature (12–30°C). Comparing the USTs with maximum seawater temperatures obtained from satellites, we investigated safety margins and niche unfilling states, both in recent history and under future climate scenarios. Results: USTs (≈24°C) did not differ significantly between populations, except for higher values (27.9°C) for the northernmost populations (cold edge) of A. nodosum. Populations of both species had thermal safety margins over the last few decades (from 1982 to 2021). However, projections based on USTs showed that in several years these margins have been eliminated and will completely disappear in the Bay of Biscay under RCP4.5 and RCP6.0 2090–2100 IPCC scenarios for C. crispus and under RCP8.5 for both species, threatening the populations there. Main Conclusions: Southern marginal populations were not better adapted to global warming than populations elsewhere. Both seaweed species tolerated higher temperatures than the ambient maxima, suggesting a thermal niche unfilling state with thermal safety margins in their recent history. However, those are being depleted by ongoing climate change and this trend is predicted to increase. Marine heat waves are important threats to these habitat-forming species, transiently reducing or even eliminating safety margins in the hottest parts of the European Atlantic coastline, contributing to explaining the distributional gap there.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
