Point interactions in acoustics: one dimensional models
A one dimensional system made up of a compressible fluid and several
mechanical oscillators, coupled to the acoustic field in the fluid, is analyzed
for different settings of the oscillators array. The dynamical models are
formulated in terms of singular perturbations of the decoupled dynamics of the
acoustic field and the mechanical oscillators. Detailed spectral properties of
the generators of the dynamics are given for each model we consider. In the
case of a periodic array of mechanical oscillators it is shown that the energy

Distribution of the very first PopIII stars and their relation to bright z~6 quasars
We discuss the link between dark matter halos hosting the first PopIII stars
and the rare, massive, halos that are generally considered to host bright
quasars at high redshift z~6. The main question that we intend to answer is
whether the super-massive black holes powering these QSOs grew out from the
seeds planted by the first intermediate massive black holes created in the
universe. This question involves a dynamical range of 10^13 in mass and we
address it by combining N-body simulations of structure formation to identify
the most massive halos at z~6 with a Monte Carlo method based on linear theory
to obtain the location and formation times of the first light halos within the
whole simulation box. We show that the descendants of the first ~10^6 Msun
virialized halos do not, on average, end up in the most massive halos at z~6,
but rather live in a large variety of environments. The oldest PopIII
progenitors of the most massive halos at z~6, form instead from density peaks
that are on average one and a half standard deviations more common than the
first PopIII star formed in the volume occupied by one bright high-z QSO. The
intermediate mass black hole seeds planted by the very first PopIII stars at
z>40 can easily grow to masses m_BH>10^9.5 Msun by z=6 assuming Eddington
accretion with radiative efficiency \epsilon~0.1. Quenching of the black hole
accretion is therefore crucial to avoid an overabundance of supermassive black
holes at lower redshift. This can be obtained if the mass accretion is limited
to a fraction \eta~6*10^{-3} of the total baryon mass of the halo hosting the
black hole. The resulting high end slope of the black hole mass function at z=6
is \alpha ~ -3.7, a value within the 1\sigma error bar for the bright end slope
of the observed quasar luminosity function at z=6.Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures, ApJ accepte
Correlation of transonic-cone preston-tube data and skin friction
Preston-tube measurements obtained on the Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC) Transition Cone have been correlated with theoretical skin friction coefficients in transitional and turbulent flow. This has been done for the NASA Ames 11-Ft Transonic Wind Tunnel (11 TWT) and flight tests. The developed semi-empirical correlations of Preston-tube data have been used to derive a calibration procedure for the 11 TWT flow quality. This procedure has been applied to the corrected laminar data, and an effective freestream unit Reynolds number is defined by requiring a matching of the average Preston-tube pressure in flight and in the tunnel. This study finds that the operating Reynolds number is below the effective value required for a match in laminar Preston-tube data. The distribution of this effective Reynolds number with Mach number correlates well with the freestream noise level in this tunnel. Analyses of transitional and turbulent data, however, did not result in effective Reynolds numbers that can be correlated with background noise. This is a result of the fact that vorticity fluctuations present in transitional and turbulent boundary layers dominate Preston-tube pressure fluctuations and, therefore, mask the tunnel noise eff ects. So, in order to calibrate the effects of noise on transonic wind tunnel tests only laminar data should be used, preferably at flow conditions similar to those in flight tests. To calibrate the effects of transonic wind-tunnel noise on drag measurements, however, the Preston-tube data must be supplemented with direct measurements of skin friction
RAT J0455+1305: A rare hybrid pulsating subdwarf B star
We present results on the second-faintest pulsating subdwarf B (sdB) star
known, RAT J0455+1305, derived from photometric data obtained in 2009. It shows
both short and long periods oscillations, theoretically assigned as pressure
and gravity modes. We identify six short-period frequencies (with one being a
combination) and six long-period frequencies. This star is the fourth hybrid
sdB star discovered so far which makes it of special interest as each type of
mode probes a different part of the star. This star is similar to the sdB
hybrid pulsator Balloon 090100001 in that it exhibits short-period mode
groupings, which can be used to identify pulsation parameters and constrain
theoretical models.Comment: published in MNRA
Parasitism, Adult Emergence, Sex Ratio, and Size of \u3ci\u3eAphidius Colemani\u3c/i\u3e (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae) on Several Aphid Species
Aphidius colemani Viereck parasitizes several economically important aphid pests of small grain crops including the greenbug, Schizaphis graminum and the Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia. The ability of A. colemani to switch from S. graminum to several species of aphids common to agricultural and associated non-agricultural ecosystems in the Great Plains, and the effects of host-change on several biological parameters that influence population growth rate were determined. Female A. colemani parasitized and developed to adulthood in nine of 14 aphid species to which they were exposed in the laboratory. All small grain feeding aphids except Sipha flava were parasitized. Two sunflower feeding species (Aphis nerii and A. helianthi) and two crucifer feeding species (Lipaphis erysimi and Brevicoryne brassicae) were parasitized, as was the cotton aphid. Aphis gossypii. The average percentage of aphids parasitized differed significantly among host aphid species. as did the percentage of parasitoids surviving from the mummy to the adult stage and the time required for immature development. The sex ratio of adults that enclosed from the various hosts did not differ significantly among species. Dry weights of adult parasitoids differed significantly among host species. Adults from S. graminum weighed most (0.054 mg) while those emerging from A. helianthi weighed least (0.020 mg). Results are discussed in terms of strategies for classical biological control of aphid pests of cereals
Evolutionary Timescale of the DAV G117-B15A: The Most Stable Optical Clock Known
We observe G117-B15A, the most precise optical clock known, to measure the
rate of change of the main pulsation period of this blue-edge DAV white dwarf.
Even though the obtained value is only within 1 sigma, Pdot = (2.3 +/- 1.4) x
10^{-15} s/s, it is already constraining the evolutionary timescale of this

On the existence of impurity bound excitons in one-dimensional systems with zero range interactions
We consider a three-body one-dimensional Schr\"odinger operator with zero
range potentials, which models a positive impurity with charge
interacting with an exciton. We study the existence of discrete eigenvalues as
is varied. On one hand, we show that for sufficiently small
there exists a unique bound state whose binding energy behaves like ,
and we explicitly compute its leading coefficient. On the other hand, if
is larger than some critical value then the system has no bound
states
On the Flux-Across-Surfaces Theorem
The quantum probability flux of a particle integrated over time and a distant
surface gives the probability for the particle crossing that surface at some
time. We prove the free Flux-Across-Surfaces Theorem, which was conjectured by
Combes, Newton and Shtokhamer, and which relates the integrated quantum flux to
the usual quantum mechanical formula for the cross section. The integrated
quantum flux is equal to the probability of outward crossings of surfaces by
