    Polynomial super-gl(n) algebras

    We introduce a class of finite dimensional nonlinear superalgebras L=L0ˉ+L1ˉL = L_{\bar{0}} + L_{\bar{1}} providing gradings of L0ˉ=gl(n)sl(n)+gl(1)L_{\bar{0}} = gl(n) \simeq sl(n) + gl(1). Odd generators close by anticommutation on polynomials (of degree >1>1) in the gl(n)gl(n) generators. Specifically, we investigate `type I' super-gl(n)gl(n) algebras, having odd generators transforming in a single irreducible representation of gl(n)gl(n) together with its contragredient. Admissible structure constants are discussed in terms of available gl(n)gl(n) couplings, and various special cases and candidate superalgebras are identified and exemplified via concrete oscillator constructions. For the case of the nn-dimensional defining representation, with odd generators Qa,QˉbQ_{a}, \bar{Q}{}^{b}, and even generators Eab{E^{a}}_{b}, a,b=1,...,na,b = 1,...,n, a three parameter family of quadratic super-gl(n)gl(n) algebras (deformations of sl(n/1)sl(n/1)) is defined. In general, additional covariant Serre-type conditions are imposed, in order that the Jacobi identities be fulfilled. For these quadratic super-gl(n)gl(n) algebras, the construction of Kac modules, and conditions for atypicality, are briefly considered. Many rural communities have a pool of mature-aged local people seeking a career change or better lifestyle, which inevitably involves reskilling or upskilling. These people have strong local ties and are committed to their community. University enabling programs provide a bridge to higher education. This longitudinal study explores the impact on rural mature-aged people of participation in a university enabling program, in terms of further study and employment outcomes. The benefits of enabling programs extend beyond individuals, to family and friends, and beyond. These broader benefits include an enhanced local skills base in key industry areas, and an increased awareness of the value of higher education within the community. Enabling programs are a powerful but under-valued tool in helping to unlock and harness the potential within rural communities, both in the medium and longer term

    Weak gravitational lensing with the Square Kilometre Array

    We investigate the capabilities of various stages of the SKA to perform world-leading weak gravitational lensing surveys. We outline a way forward to develop the tools needed for pursuing weak lensing in the radio band. We identify the key analysis challenges and the key pathfinder experiments that will allow us to address them in the run up to the SKA. We identify and summarize the unique and potentially very powerful aspects of radio weak lensing surveys, facilitated by the SKA, that can solve major challenges in the field of weak lensing. These include the use of polarization and rotational velocity information to control intrinsic alignments, and the new area of weak lensing using intensity mapping experiments. We show how the SKA lensing surveys will both complement and enhance corresponding efforts in the optical wavebands through cross-correlation techniques and by way of extending the reach of weak lensing to high redshift.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures.     A kinematical approach to gravitational lensing using new formulae for refractive index and acceleration

    This paper uses the Schwarzschild metric to derive an effective refractive index and acceleration vector that account for relativistic deflection of light rays, in an otherwise classical kinematic framework. The new refractive index and the known path equation are integrated to give accurate results for travel time and deflection angle, respectively. A new formula for coordinate acceleration is derived which describes the path of a massless test particle in the vicinity of a spherically symmetric mass density distribution. A standard ray-shooting technique is used to compare the deflection angle and time delay predicted by this new formula with the previously calculated values, and with standard first order approximations. Finally, the ray shooting method is used in theoretical examples of strong and weak lensing, reproducing known observer-plane caustic patterns for multiple masses.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, MNRAS accepte

    Practice-Focused, Constructivist Grounded Theory Methodology In Higher Education Leadership Research

    A growing body of education research considers practices, however there is less focus on a methodology that enables practical analysis of practices. Use of practice theory is growing, particularly in work and organisational studies, but practice focused studies more frequently address theoretical than methodological agenda. This chapter proposes a practice-focused, constructivist grounded theory methodology as one approach which can address this gap. After first considering the ways in which, separately and in combination, practice-theory and constructivist grounded theory can support higher education leadership and management research, the chapter considers implementation of this methodology by drawing on a study into the practice of authority in higher education leadership. It concludes by considering some implications for the ways in which practices can be understood and the affordances and limitations of this methodology.Peer reviewe

    Herschel-ATLAS: The angular correlation function of submillimetre galaxies at high and low redshift

Careful removal of the background from galactic cirrus is essential, and currently dominates the uncertainty in our measurements. For our 250 μm-selected sample we detect no significant clustering, consistent with the expectation that the 250 μm-selected sources are mostly normal galaxies at z 1. For our 350 μm and 500 μm-selected samples we detect relatively strong clustering with correlation amplitudes A of 0.2 and 1.2 at 1', but with relatively large uncertainties. For samples which preferentially select high redshift galaxies at z~2–3 we detect significant strong clustering, leading to an estimate of r0 ~ 7–11 h-1 Mpc. The slope of our clustering measurements is very steep, δ ~ 2. The measurements are consistent with the idea that sub-mm sources consist of a low redshift population of normal galaxies and a high redshift population of highly clustered star-bursting galaxies.Peer reviewe
