EPR and pulsed ENDOR study of intermediates from reactions of aromatic azides with group 13 metal trichlorides
The reactions of group 13 metal trichlorides with aromatic azides were examined by CW EPR and pulsed ENDOR spectroscopies. Complex EPR spectra were obtained from reactions of aluminium, gallium and indium trichlorides with phenyl azides containing a variety of substituents. Analysis of the spectra showed that 4-methoxy-, 3-methoxy- and 2-methoxyphenyl azides all gave ‘dimer’ radical cations [ArNHC6H4NH2]+• and trimers [ArNHC6H4NHC6H4NH2]+• followed by polymers. 4-Azidobenzonitrile, with its electron-withdrawing substituent, did not react. In general the aromatic azides appeared to react most rapidly with AlCl3 but this reagent tended to generate much polymer. InCl3 was the least reactive group 13 halide. DFT computations of the radical cations provided corroborating evidence and suggested that the unpaired electrons were accommodated in extensive π-delocalised orbitals. Postprocessing for skin detection
Skin detectors play a crucial role in many applications: face localization, person tracking, objectionable content screening, etc. Skin detection is a complicated process that involves not only the development of apposite classifiers but also many ancillary methods, including techniques for data preprocessing and postprocessing. In this paper, a new postprocessing method is described that learns to select whether an image needs the application of various morphological sequences or a homogeneity function. The type of postprocessing method selected is learned based on categorizing the image into one of eleven predetermined classes. The novel postprocessing method presented here is evaluated on ten datasets recommended for fair comparisons that represent many skin detection applications. The results show that the new approach enhances the performance of the base classifiers and previous works based only on learning the most appropriate morphological sequences
Thermal and UV aging of polypropylene stabilized by wine seeds wastes and their extracts
A commercial tannin wine seed extract powder (T), a seed polyphenol extract (Sext) and virgin wine seeds wastes (Se) have been mixed with polypropylene (PP) and tested as long-term stabilizers. Their stabilizing activity has been compared with that of a synthetic antioxidant commonly used within PP (Irganox 1010). Each sample has been subject to both UV and thermal aging. The PP-based films photo-oxidation has been followed through the C=O formation over the aging time by FT-IR. The PP-based tensile specimens have been oven aged and the mechanical properties loss has been investigated monitoring the variation of the elongation at break. Melt Flow Index (MFI) measures and Different Scanning Calorimetry analysis have been conducted on thermally aged samples. At the same time, wine derived additives have been characterized in terms of total polyphenol content, FT-IR and UV/VIS spectra meanwhile catechin and gallic acid have been quantified by LC-MS. Experimental results have evidenced the ability of all the wine derived additives to withstand both to thermal and UV long-term degradation. In particular, wine seeds extracts exhibit the best results in terms of stabilization (even better than Irganox 1010) without compromising the PP mechanical, thermal, morphological and rheological properties
Behavior of Full-Scale Porous GFRP Barrier under Blast Loads
This research paper is part of the SAS (Security of Airport Structures) Project funded by the European Programme for Critical Infrastructure Protection, whose objective was to develop and deploy a fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) fencing system intended to protect airport infrastructures against terrorist acts. In the paper, the efficacy of the proposed glass FRP discontinuous (porous) barrier under blast loads is presented by showing the results of the blast test campaign conducted on full-size specimens with a focus on the reduction of the blast shock wave induced by the barrier. A simplified model predicting the reduction of the shock wave beyond the barrier is proposed and validated via the experimental data obtained in the project
Closing the performance gap between siamese networks for dissimilarity image classification and convolutional neural networks
In this paper, we examine two strategies for boosting the performance of ensembles of Siamese networks (SNNs) for image classification using two loss functions (Triplet and Binary Cross Entropy) and two methods for building the dissimilarity spaces (FULLY and DEEPER). With FULLY, the distance between a pattern and a prototype is calculated by comparing two images using the fully connected layer of the Siamese network. With DEEPER, each pattern is described using a deeper layer combined with dimensionality reduction. The basic design of the SNNs takes advantage of supervised k-means clustering for building the dissimilarity spaces that train a set of support vector machines, which are then combined by sum rule for a final decision. The robustness and versatility of this approach are demonstrated on several cross-domain image data sets, including a portrait data set, two bioimage and two animal vocalization data sets. Results show that the strategies employed in this work to increase the performance of dissimilarity image classification using SNN are closing the gap with standalone CNNs. Moreover, when our best system is combined with an ensemble of CNNs, the resulting performance is superior to an ensemble of CNNs, demonstrating that our new strategy is extracting additional information
The aberrant expression in epithelial cells of the mesenchymal isoform of FGFR2 controls the negative crosstalk between EMT and autophagy
Signalling of the epithelial splicing variant of fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (FGFR2b) triggers both differentiation and autophagy, while the aberrant expression of the mesenchymal FGFR2c isoform in epithelial cells induces impaired differentiation, inhibition of autophagy as well as the induction of the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). In light of the widely proposed negative loop linking autophagy and EMT in the early steps of carcinogenesis, here we investigated the possible involvement of FGFR2c aberrant expression and signalling in orchestrating this crosstalk in human keratinocytes. Biochemical, molecular, quantitative immunofluorescence analysis and in vitro invasion assays, coupled to the use of specific substrate inhibitors and transient or stable silencing approaches, showed that AKT/MTOR and PKCε are the two hub signalling pathways, downstream FGFR2c, intersecting with each other in the control of both the inhibition of autophagy and the induction of EMT and invasive behaviour. These results indicate that the expression of FGFR2c, possibly resulting from FGFR2 isoform switch, could represent a key upstream event responsible for the establishment of a negative interplay between autophagy and EMT, which contributes to the assessment of a pathological oncogenic profile in epithelial cells

Recent results and new hardware developments for protein crystal growth in microactivity
Protein crystal growth experiments have been performed on 16 space shuttle missions since April, 1985. The initial experiments utilized vapor diffusion crystallization techniques similar to those used in laboratories for earth-based experiments. More recent experiments have utilized temperature induced crystallization as an alternative method for growing high quality protein crystals in microgravity. Results from both vapor diffusion and temperature induced crystallization experiments indicate that proteins grown in microgravity may be larger, display more uniform morphologies, and yield diffraction data to significantly higher resolutions than the best crystals of these proteins grown on earth

Lo screening pre-trapianto dei potenziali candidati a un trapianto d\u2019organo \ue8 parte essenziale del trapianto di organi solidi. Obiettivi dello screening pre-trapianto sono: 1. identificazione di condizioni che controindicano il trapianto; 2. identificazione e trattamento di infezioni attive pre-trapianto; 3. definizione del livello di rischio infettivo e impostazione di strategie preventive post-trapianto.
