    Análisis numérico de una formulación para el problema de fluencia transiente

    En este trabajo analizamos el problema de fluencia transiente o de elasto-fluencia, para lo cual presentamos una nueva formulación mixta y demostramos el carácter asintótico de la solución. Para obtener la solución de este problema, utilizamos el método de elementos finitos en la aproximación espacial y el esquema de Euler implícito en la discretización temporal. Demostramos estabilidad y convergencia, y presentamos cotas de error para las soluciones de los problemas semi-discreto y totalmente discreto, mostrando que ellos conservan el carácter asintótico de la solución del problema continuo.Peer Reviewe

    Identification of a Metabolic Disposal Route for the Oncometabolite S-(2-succino)cysteine in Bacillus subtilis

    Cellular thiols such as cysteine spontaneously and readily react with the respiratory intermediate fumarate, resulting in the formation of stable S-(2-succino)-adducts. Fumarate-mediated succination of thiols increases in certain tumors and in response to glucotoxicity associated with diabetes. Therefore, S-(2-succino)-adducts such as S-(2-succino)cysteine (2SC) are considered oncometabolites and biomarkers for human disease. No disposal routes for S-(2-succino)-compounds have been reported prior to this study. Here, we show that Bacillus subtilis metabolizes 2SC to cysteine using a pathway encoded by the yxe operon. The first step is N-acetylation of 2SC followed by an oxygenation that we propose results in the release of oxaloacetate and N-acetylcysteine, which is deacetylated to give cysteine. Knockouts of the genes predicted to mediate each step in the pathway lose the ability to grow on 2SC as the sulfur source and accumulate the expected upstream metabolite(s). We further show that N-acetylation of 2SC relieves toxicity. This is the first demonstration of a metabolic disposal route for any S-(2-succino)-compound, paving the way toward the identification of corresponding pathways in other species

    Creation of a trajectory framework that could be sustainable for a continuous exploration of Mars and its moons

    As humanity looks to the Cislunar region in recent space flight operations, the question remains: where will technology advance next? Mars is of particular interest with both the public and private sector aiming to get humans on the planet in the coming decades. Investigating stable trajectories in the Mars-Phobos-Deimos system for telecommunications and observation is the next step in developing future mission plans. Innovations in orbital mechanics must be considered, neither the Two Body Problem (2BP) nor the Circular Restricted Three Body Problem (CR3BP) are sufficient to effectively model satellite motion. Instead, in similar fashion to the patched-conics solution of transfers between the influence of celestial bodies, a patched CR3BP-2BP-CR3BP method of propagating the orbits is proposed. To begin, assumptions about Deimos and Phobos will be made—co-planar orbits and spherical symmetry to name a few. Once the problem has been successfully modeled, each assumption will be undone methodically to increase modeling accuracy. Impulsive maneuvers will be considered, as well as low, continuous thrust maneuvers. The aim of this project is to develop a robust, sustainable trajectory framework that can be used in future missions

    Toward Eco-centric, Earth-as-School, and Love-based Curriculum and Learning: Example of a graduate course

    This article puts forward love, care, and reverence for all people and our nonhuman kin as the center of posthumanist education. Opening our spiritual eye and building intimate relationships with nature and with all elements of the universe is envisioned as part of a schooling or post-schooling experience; our body, heart and spirit, along with our mind, is an essential part of learning. The article describes the experiences of students taking a graduate level course focusing on global climate change and education at a university in the United States. We use the course as an example to explore what posthumanist education entails. In this qualitative study, students taking the course, along with the faculty designing and teaching the course, describe the course curriculum and pedagogies and reflect on the course’s impact on them. Data sources include the syllabus, students’ reflection papers, nature contact journals, final projects, art works, and group conversations. Although situated in North America, the article is rich with international perspectives as student authors came from six different countries. The article posits that posthumanist education must be eco-centric and love-based, engaging students’ whole being to feel for and love Mother Nature.     Coherent and squeezed states of quantum Heisenberg algebras

    Starting from deformed quantum Heisenberg Lie algebras some realizations are given in terms of the usual creation and annihilation operators of the standard harmonic oscillator. Then the associated algebra eigenstates are computed and give rise to new classes of deformed coherent and squeezed states. They are parametrized by deformed algebra parameters and suitable redefinitions of them as paragrassmann numbers.     Spatial variation in cancer incidence and survival over time across Queensland, Australia

    Interpreting changes over time in small-area variation in cancer survival, in light of changes in cancer incidence, aids understanding progress in cancer control, yet few space-time analyses have considered both measures. Bayesian space-time hierarchical models were applied to Queensland Cancer Registry data to examine geographical changes in cancer incidence and relative survival over time for the five most common cancers (colorectal, melanoma, lung, breast, prostate) diagnosed during 1997-2004 and 2005-2012 across 516 Queensland residential small-areas. Large variation in both cancer incidence and survival was observed. Survival improvements were fairly consistent across the state, although small for lung cancer. Incidence changes varied by location and cancer type, ranging from lung and colorectal cancers remaining relatively constant over time, to prostate cancer dramatically increasing across the entire state. Reducing disparities in cancer-related outcomes remains a health priority, and space-time modelling of different measures provides an important mechanism by which to monitor progress
