    Validity of the N\'{e}el-Arrhenius model for highly anisotropic Co_xFe_{3-x}O_4 nanoparticles

    We report a systematic study on the structural and magnetic properties of Co_{x}Fe_{3-x}O_{4} magnetic nanoparticles with sizes between 55 to 2525 nm, prepared by thermal decomposition of Fe(acac)_{3} and Co(acac)_{2}. The large magneto-crystalline anisotropy of the synthesized particles resulted in high blocking temperatures (4242 K \leqq TBT_B ≦345\leqq 345 K for 5≦5 \leqq d ≦13\leqq 13 nm ) and large coercive fields (HC≊1600H_C \approxeq 1600 kA/m for T=5T = 5 K). The smallest particles (=5=5 nm) revealed the existence of a magnetically hard, spin-disordered surface. The thermal dependence of static and dynamic magnetic properties of the whole series of samples could be explained within the N\'{e}el-Arrhenius relaxation framework without the need of ad-hoc corrections, by including the thermal dependence of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant K1(T)K_1(T) through the empirical Br\"{u}khatov-Kirensky relation. This approach provided K1(0)K_1(0) values very similar to the bulk material from either static or dynamic magnetic measurements, as well as realistic values for the response times (τ0≃10−10\tau_0 \simeq 10^{-10} s). Deviations from the bulk anisotropy values found for the smallest particles could be qualitatively explained based on Zener\'{}s relation between K1(T)K_1(T) and M(T)

    Minimal lepton flavor violating realizations of minimal seesaw models

    We study the implications of the global U(1)R symmetry present in minimal lepton flavor violating implementations of the seesaw mechanism for neutrino masses. In the context of minimal type I seesaw scenarios with a slightly broken U(1)R, we show that, depending on the R-charge assignments, two classes of generic models can be identified. Models where the right-handed neutrino masses and the lepton number breaking scale are decoupled, and models where the parameters that slightly break the U(1)R induce a suppression in the light neutrino mass matrix. We show that within the first class of models, contributions of right-handed neutrinos to charged lepton flavor violating processes are severely suppressed. Within the second class of models we study the charged lepton flavor violating phenomenology in detail, focusing on mu to e gamma, mu to 3e and mu to e conversion in nuclei. We show that sizable contributions to these processes are naturally obtained for right-handed neutrino masses at the TeV scale. We then discuss the interplay with the effects of the right-handed neutrino interactions on primordial B - L asymmetries, finding that sizable right-handed neutrino contributions to charged lepton flavor violating processes are incompatible with the requirement of generating (or even preserving preexisting) B - L asymmetries consistent with the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures; version 2: Discussion on possible generic models extended, typos corrected, references added.     On the Complexity of Searching in Trees: Average-case Minimization

    We focus on the average-case analysis: A function w : V -> Z+ is given which defines the likelihood for a node to be the one marked, and we want the strategy that minimizes the expected number of queries. Prior to this paper, very little was known about this natural question and the complexity of the problem had remained so far an open question. We close this question and prove that the above tree search problem is NP-complete even for the class of trees with diameter at most 4. This results in a complete characterization of the complexity of the problem with respect to the diameter size. In fact, for diameter not larger than 3 the problem can be shown to be polynomially solvable using a dynamic programming approach. In addition we prove that the problem is NP-complete even for the class of trees of maximum degree at most 16. To the best of our knowledge, the only known result in this direction is that the tree search problem is solvable in O(|V| log|V|) time for trees with degree at most 2 (paths). We match the above complexity results with a tight algorithmic analysis. We first show that a natural greedy algorithm attains a 2-approximation. Furthermore, for the bounded degree instances, we show that any optimal strategy (i.e., one that minimizes the expected number of queries) performs at most O(\Delta(T) (log |V| + log w(T))) queries in the worst case, where w(T) is the sum of the likelihoods of the nodes of T and \Delta(T) is the maximum degree of T. We combine this result with a non-trivial exponential time algorithm to provide an FPTAS for trees with bounded degree

    Geo-Fence Based Route Tracking Diagnosis Strategy for Energy Prediction Strategies Applied to EV

    Nowadays, the shortage of energy and environmental pollution are considered as relevant problems due to the high amount of traditional automotive vehicles with internal combustion engines (ICEs). Electric vehicle (EV) is one of the solutions to localize the energy source and the best choice for saving energy and provide zero emission vehicles. However, their main drawback when compared to conventional vehicles is their limited energy storage capacity, resulting in poor driving ranges. In order to mitigate this issue, the scientific community is extensively researching on energy optimization and prediction strategies to extend the autonomy of EV. In general, such strategies require the knowledge of the route profile, being of capital importance to identify whether the vehicle is on route or not. Considering this, in this paper, a route tracking diagnosis strategy is proposed and tested. The proposed strategy relies on the information provided by the Google Maps API (Application Programming Interface) to calculate the vehicles reference route. Additionally, a Global Positioning System (GPS) device is used to monitor the real vehicle position.     A Brief Review on Dark Matter Annihilation Explanation for e±e^\pm Excesses in Cosmic Ray

    Recently data from PAMELA, ATIC, FERMI-LAT and HESS show that there are e±e^{\pm} excesses in the cosmic ray energy spectrum. PAMELA observed excesses only in e+e^+, but not in anti-proton spectrum. ATIC, FERMI-LAT and HESS observed excesses in e++e−e^++e^- spectrum, but the detailed shapes are different which requires future experimental observations to pin down the correct data set. Nevertheless a lot of efforts have been made to explain the observed e±e^\pm excesses, and also why PAMELA only observed excesses in e+e^+ but not in anti-proton. In this brief review we discuss one of the most popular mechanisms to explain the data, the dark matter annihilation. It has long been known that about 23% of our universe is made of relic dark matter. If the relic dark matter was thermally produced, the annihilation rate is constrained resulting in the need of a large boost factor to explain the data. We will discuss in detail how a large boost factor can be obtained by the Sommerfeld and Briet-Wigner enhancement mechanisms.     Characteristics of Mexican Leather Footwear Industry and its International Trade Activity, Correlation of Productivity, and Competitiveness

    This paper focuses on analyzing the globalization effect on the Mexican leather footwear industry at a firm-level. In this work, the analysis of competitiveness is done based on the definition given by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). They defined it as ‘a measure of a country's advantage or disadvantage in selling its products in international market’. The productivity of the Mexican leather footwear industry was calculated using the Latin American-KLEMS Model that relates gross output to primary (Capital and Labor) and intermediate inputs (Energy, Other intermediate goods, and Services). Furthermore, firms were categorized considering the number of employees, the annual value of production, and the commercial diversification in order to calculate the correlation Pearson coefficient. Firstly, the results show that the correlation of production value with the number of exporting companies is bigger than the correlation of the importing companies. Secondly, that the correlation of Total Productivity Factor (TPF) to exports is strong (0.7028); and finally, that the correlation of Total Productivity Factor (TPF) to imports is also significant (0.6511)
