Differential effects of MDMA and methylphenidate on social cognition
Social cognition is important in everyday-life social interactions. The social cognitive effects of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, 'ecstasy') and methylphenidate (both used for neuroenhancement and as party drugs) are largely unknown. We investigated the acute effects of MDMA (75 mg), methylphenidate (40 mg) and placebo using the Facial Emotion Recognition Task, Multifaceted Empathy Test, Movie for the Assessment of Social Cognition, Social Value Orientation Test and the Moral Judgment Task in a cross-over study in 30 healthy subjects. Additionally, subjective, autonomic, pharmacokinetic, endocrine and adverse drug effects were measured. MDMA enhanced emotional empathy for positive emotionally charged situations in the MET and tended to reduce the recognition of sad faces in the Facial Emotion Recognition Task. MDMA had no effects on cognitive empathy in the Multifaceted Empathy Test or social cognitive inferences in the Movie for the Assessment of Social Cognition. MDMA produced subjective 'empathogenic' effects, such as drug liking, closeness to others, openness and trust. In contrast, methylphenidate lacked such subjective effects and did not alter emotional processing, empathy or mental perspective-taking. MDMA but not methylphenidate increased the plasma levels of oxytocin and prolactin. None of the drugs influenced moral judgment. Effects on emotion recognition and emotional empathy were evident at a low dose of MDMA and likely contribute to the popularity of the drug

Este projeto visa capturar a percepção de crianças de 8 a 10 anos de Foz do Iguaçu
na Escola Municipal Rosália de Amorim Silva; suas experiências no contexto urbano,
enfatizando o uso da paisagem socioambiental, através da produção coletiva de
livros de pano. Assim, o projeto procura dar voz a grupos geralmente excluídos da
tomada de decisões sobre o planejamento urbano, como crianças, jovens e
mulheres, e iniciar um processo de fortalecimento de identidades locais. Para isso,
propõe-se o estabelecimento de um espaço democrático de troca de experiências –
conhecimento, práticas, memórias – que culmine na produção de material de
registro, resistência, reivindicação, e que sirva para fins acadêmicos e pedagógicos.
O projeto contribuirá, finalmente, para a formação de acadêmicos que respeitem e
compreendam o papel do extensionista como mediador e facilitador de processos,
em um contexto interdisciplinar e diverso
Variation in antral follicle counts at different times in the menstrual cycle: does it matter?
Antral follicle count (AFC) variation was examined across the menstural cycle and its effect on clinical management assessed. In 79 women, AFC was documented in early (iAFC) and late follicular phase (sAFC). Absolute agreement between iAFC and sAFC and agreement for classification into categories of risk of extremes of ovarian response were examined. Ovarian stimulation protocols designed with iAFC and sAFC, and the predictive value of iAFC and sAFC for extremes of ovarian response, were compared in women undergoing ovarian stimulation. Significant differences were found between iAFC and sAFC (16 [IQR 9-24] versus 13 [IQR 7- 21]; P = 0.001), with moderate agreement for the classification into at risk of extremes of response (k = 0.525). Agreement for protocol selection based on either AFC (k = 0.750) and starting gonadotrophin dose was good (concordance correlation coefficient 0.970 [95% CI 0.951 to 0.982]). Predictive value for iAFC and sAFC was maintained for poor ovarian response and risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OR 0.634 [0.427 to 0.920], 0.467 [0.233 to 0.935]) and (OR 1.049 [0.974 to 1.131], 1.140 [1.011 to 1.285]). Across the cycle, AFC varies but does not significantly affect ovarian stimulation protocol design and prediction of extreme ovarian response
Humic acid from Shilajit – a physico-chemical and spectroscopic characterization
Shilajit is a blackish–brown exudation, consisting of organic substances, metal ions and minerals, from different formations, commonly found in the Himalayan region (1000–3000 m) from Nepal to Kashmir. Shilajit can also be collected throughout the mountain regions in Afghanistan, Bhutan, China, Bajkal, throughout Ural, Caucasus and Altai mountains also, at altitudes between 1000 to 5000 m. The major physiological action of shilajit has been attributed to the presence of bioactive dibenzo-α-pyrones together with humic and fulvic acids, which act as carrier molecules for the active ingredients. In this work, the aim was to extract humic acid from Shilajit from various sources and characterised these humic acids based on their physicochemical properties, elemental analysis, UV/Vis and FTIR spectra, X-ray diffraction pattern and DSC thermograms. The spectral features obtained from UV/Vis, FTIR, XRD and DSC studies for samples of different origins showed a distinct similarity amongst themselves and in comparison to soil humic acids. The surfactant properties of the extracted fulvic acids were investigated by determining the effect of increasing concentration on the surface tension of water. The study demonstrated that humic acids extracted from shilajit indeed possessed surfactant properties
Learning To Be Affected: Social suffering and total pain at life’s borders.
The practice of Live Sociology in situations of pain and suffering is the author’s focus. An outline of the challenges of understanding pain is followed by a discussion of Bourdieu’s ‘social suffering’ (1999) and the palliative care philosophy of ‘total pain’. Using examples from qualitative research on disadvantaged dying migrants in the UK, attention is given to the methods that are improvised by dying people and care practitioners in attempts to bridge intersubjective divides, where the causes and routes of pain can be ontologically and temporally indeterminate and/or withdrawn. The paper contends that these latter phenomena are the incitement for the inventive bridging and performative work of care and Live Sociological methods, both of which are concerned with opposing suffering. Drawing from the ontology of total pain, I highlight the importance of (i) an engagement with a range of materials out of which attempts at intersubjective bridging can be produced, and which exceed the social, the material, and the temporally linear; and (ii) an empirical sensibility that is hospitable to the inaccessible and non-relational
Study Of Food Safety On Dark Chocolate Enriched With Cinnamon (Cinnamomum Burmanii) During Storage
Fat and sugar blooming on chocolate affects on consumer acceptance, because the existing perceptionthat blooming decrease the safety of the product. Enriching dark chocolate bar with essential oil fromcinnamon (Cinnamomum burmanii) have been conducted. This research aims to investigate the effect ofcinnamon on the blooming occurence during storage. As soon as the chocolate bloomed, FFA and TPCanalysis were performed as safety indicator. The results shows that enriching essential oil from cinnamonslackens bloom appearance on dark chocolate. The bloomed product is safe to be consumed, since FFAand TPC number are under the maximum limit of the requirements of food safety
Polymer-Layered Silicate Nanocomposites for Cryotank Applications
Previous composite cryotank designs have relied on the use of conventional composite materials to reduce microcracking and permeability. However, revolutionary advances in nanotechnology derived materials may enable the production of ultra-lightweight cryotanks with significantly enhanced durability and damage tolerance, as well as reduced propellant permeability. Layered silicate nanocomposites are especially attractive in cryogenic storage tanks based on results that have been reported for epoxy nanocomposite systems. These materials often exhibit an order of magnitude reduction in gas permeability when compared to the base resin. In addition, polymer-silicate nanocomposites have been shown to yield improved dimensional stability, strength, and toughness. The enhancement in material performance of these systems occurs without property trade-offs which are often observed in conventionally filled polymer composites. Research efforts at NASA Glenn Research Center have led to the development of epoxy-clay nanocomposites with 70% lower hydrogen permeability than the base epoxy resin. Filament wound carbon fiber reinforced tanks made with this nanocomposite had a five-fold lower helium leak rate than the corresponding tanks made without clay. The pronounced reduction observed with the tank may be due to flow induced alignment of the clay layers during processing. Additionally, the nanocomposites showed CTE reductions of up to 30%, as well as a 100% increase in toughness
Dnmt3a regulates emotional behavior and spine plasticity in the nucleus accumbens.
Despite abundant expression of DNA methyltransferases (Dnmts) in brain, the regulation and behavioral role of DNA methylation remain poorly understood. We found that Dnmt3a expression was regulated in mouse nucleus accumbens (NAc) by chronic cocaine use and chronic social defeat stress. Moreover, NAc-specific manipulations that block DNA methylation potentiated cocaine reward and exerted antidepressant-like effects, whereas NAc-specific Dnmt3a overexpression attenuated cocaine reward and was pro-depressant. On a cellular level, we found that chronic cocaine use selectively increased thin dendritic spines on NAc neurons and that DNA methylation was both necessary and sufficient to mediate these effects. These data establish the importance of Dnmt3a in the NAc in regulating cellular and behavioral plasticity to emotional stimuli
Parental, prenatal, and neonatal associations with ball skills at age 8 using an exposome approach.
There is little consistency in the literature concerning factors that influence motor coordination in children. A hypothesis-free "exposome" approach was used with 7359 children using longitudinal information covering 3 generations in regard to throwing a ball accurately at age 7 years. The analyses showed an independent robust negative association with mother's unhappiness in her midchildhood (6-11 years). No such association was present for study fathers. The offspring of parents who described themselves as having poor eyesight had poorer ability. This hypothesis-free approach has identified a strong negative association with an unhappy childhood. Future studies of this cohort will be used to determine whether the mechanism is manifest through differing parenting skills, or a biological mechanism reflecting epigenetic effects
