Nonadiabatic quantum control of a semiconductor charge qubit
We demonstrate multipulse quantum control of a single electron charge qubit.
The qubit is manipulated by applying nonadiabatic voltage pulses to a surface
depletion gate and readout is achieved using a quantum point contact charge
sensor. We observe Ramsey fringes in the excited state occupation in response
to a pi/2 - pi/2 pulse sequence and extract T2* ~ 60 ps away from the charge
degeneracy point. Simulations suggest these results may be extended to
implement a charge-echo by reducing the interdot tunnel coupling and pulse rise
time, thereby increasing the nonadiabaticity of the pulses.Comment: Related papers at http://pettagroup.princeton.ed
Scalable Spin Amplification with a Gain over a Hundred
We propose a scalable and practical implementation of spin amplification
which does not require individual addressing nor a specially tailored spin
network. We have demonstrated a gain of 140 in a solid-state nuclear spin
system of which the spin polarization has been increased to 0.12 using dynamic
nuclear polarization with photoexcited triplet electron spins. Spin
amplification scalable to a higher gain opens the door to the single spin
measurement for a readout of quantum computers as well as practical
applications of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to infinitesimal
samples which have been concealed by thermal noise.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure
Risk Assessment and Comparative Effectiveness of Left Ventricular Assist Device and Medical Management in Ambulatory Heart Failure Patients The ROADMAP Study 2-Year Results
OBJECTIVES The authors sought to provide the pre-specified primary endpoint of the ROADMAP (Risk Assessment and Comparative Effectiveness of Left Ventricular Assist Device and Medical Management in Ambulatory Heart Failure Patients) trial at 2 years. BACKGROUND The ROADMAP trial was a prospective nonrandomized observational study of 200 patients (97 with a left ventricular assist device [LVAD], 103 on optimal medical management [OMM]) that showed that survival with improved functional status at 1 year was better with LVADs compared with OMM in a patient population of ambulatory New York Heart Association functional class IIIb/IV patients. METHODS The primary composite endpoint was survival on original therapy with improvement in 6-min walk distance \u3e= 75 m. RESULTS Patients receiving LVAD versus OMM had lower baseline health-related quality of life, reduced Seattle Heart Failure Model 1-year survival (78% vs. 84%; p = 0.012), and were predominantly INTERMACS (Interagency Registry for Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support) profile 4 (65% vs. 34%; p \u3c 0.001) versus profiles 5 to 7. More LVAD patients met the primary endpoint at 2 years: 30% LVAD versus 12% OMM (odds ratio: 3.2 [95% confidence interval: 1.3 to 7.7]; p = 0.012). Survival as treated on original therapy at 2 years was greater for LVAD versus OMM (70 +/- 5% vs. 41 +/- 5%; p \u3c 0.001), but there was no difference in intent-to-treat survival (70 +/- 5% vs. 63 +/- 5%; p = 0.307). In the OMM arm, 23 of 103 (22%) received delayed LVADs (18 within 12 months; 5 from 12 to 24 months). LVAD adverse events declined after year 1 for bleeding (primarily gastrointestinal) and arrhythmias. CONCLUSIONS Survival on original therapy with improvement in 6-min walk distance was superior with LVAD compared with OMM at 2 years. Reduction in key adverse events beyond 1 year was observed in the LVAD group. The ROADMAP trial provides risk-benefit information to guide patient- and physician-shared decision making for elective LVAD therapy as a treatment for heart failure. Multiphoton Transitions in a Spin System Driven by Strong Bichromatic Field
EPR transient nutation spectroscopy is used to measure the effective field
(Rabi frequency) for multiphoton transitions in a two-level spin system
bichromatically driven by a transverse microwave (MW) field and a longitudinal
radio-frequency (RF) field. The behavior of the effective field amplitude is
examined in the case of a relatively strong MW field, when the derivation of
the effective Hamiltonian cannot be reduced to first-order perturbation theory
in w_{1} / w_{rf} (w_{1} is the microwave Rabi frequency, w_{rf} is the RF
frequency). Experimental results are consistently interpreted by taking into
account the contributions of second and third order in w_{1} / w_{rf} evaluated
by Krylov-Bogolyubov-Mitropolsky averaging. In the case of inhomogeneously
broadened EPR line, the third-order correction modifies the nutation frequency,
while the second-order correction gives rise to a change in the nutation
amplitude due to a Bloch-Siegert shift.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
Influence of tied ridging technology on the rate of surface runoff and erosion in potato cultivation
ArticleWater management and securing good condition of soil is becoming an important
factor in agriculture one of the reasons being adaptation to the increasingly frequent extremes in
weather. Tied ridging technology enables to reduce significantly the loss of water and soil from
arable land. The effect of a tied ridger mounted on 2-row planter and effect of 6-row tied ridger
on basin renewal was tested in potato cultivation on plots of land with length of 10 m. During
entire season lasting 135 days the technology helped achieve 78% of efficiency in reduction of
surface water runoff and 88% of efficiency in case of soil loss. In the case of furrows with only
tied ridging the water retained represented additional 15% of total water from rainfall (37.5 mm
of 250 mm) over untreated furrows. In the case of basins formed in furrows with wheel trails the
water retained represented 15% of total water from rainfalls in the trail. This water retained on
the land would have otherwise flown off and would not have been utilized without this
technology. The renewal of dams after 1/3 of the season increased significantly the efficiency of

Stability of scaling regimes in developed turbulence with weak anisotropy
The fully developed turbulence with weak anisotropy is investigated by means
of renormalization group approach (RG) and double expansion regularization for
dimensions . Some modification of the standard minimal substraction
scheme has been used to analyze stability of the Kolmogorov scaling regime
which is governed by the renormalization group fixed point. This fixed point is
unstable at ; thus, the infinitesimally weak anisotropy destroyes above
scaling regime in two-dimensional space. The restoration of the stability of
this fixed point, under transition from to has been demonstrated
at borderline dimension . The results are in qualitative agreement
with ones obtained recently in the framework of the usual analytical

Extreme Harmonic Generation in Electrically Driven Spin Resonance
We report the observation of multiple harmonic generation in electric dipole
spin resonance in an InAs nanowire double quantum dot. The harmonics display a
remarkable detuning dependence: near the interdot charge transition as many as
eight harmonics are observed, while at large detunings we only observe the
fundamental spin resonance condition. The detuning dependence indicates that
the observed harmonics may be due to Landau-Zener transition dynamics at

Ustekinumab as Induction and Maintenance Therapy for Crohn’s Disease
BACKGROUND
Ustekinumab, a monoclonal antibody to the p40 subunit of interleukin-12 and inter-leukin-23, was evaluated as an intravenous induction therapy in two populations with moderately to severely active Crohn’s disease. Ustekinumab was also evaluated as subcutaneous maintenance therapy.
METHODS
We randomly assigned patients to receive a single intravenous dose of ustekinumab (either 130 mg or approximately 6 mg per kilogram of body weight) or placebo in two induction trials. The UNITI-1 trial included 741 patients who met the criteria for primary or secondary nonresponse to tumor necrosis factor (TNF) antagonists or had unacceptable side effects. The UNITI-2 trial included 628 patients in whom conventional therapy failed or unacceptable side effects occurred. Patients who completed
these induction trials then participated in IM-UNITI, in which the 397 patients who had a response to ustekinumab were randomly assigned to receive subcutaneous maintenance injections of 90 mg of ustekinumab (either every 8 weeks or every 12 weeks) or placebo. The primary end point for the induction trials was a clinical response at week 6 (defined as a decrease from baseline in the Crohn’s Disease Activity Index [CDAI] score of ≥100 points or a CDAI score <150). The primary end point for the maintenance trial was remission at week 44 (CDAI score <150).
RESULTS
The rates of response at week 6 among patients receiving intravenous ustekinumab at a dose of either 130 mg or approximately 6 mg per kilogram were significantly higher
than the rates among patients receiving placebo (in UNITI-1, 34.3%, 33.7%, and 21.5%, respectively, with P≤0.003 for both comparisons with placebo; in UNITI-2, 51.7%, 55.5%, and 28.7%, respectively, with P<0.001 for both doses). In the groups receiving maintenance doses of ustekinumab every 8 weeks or every 12 weeks, 53.1% and 48.8%, respectively, were in remission at week 44, as compared with 35.9% of those receiving placebo (P = 0.005 and P = 0.04, respectively). Within each trial, adverse-event rates were similar among treatment groups.
CONCLUSIONS
Among patients with moderately to severely active Crohn’s disease, those receiving intravenous ustekinumab had a significantly higher rate of response than did those receiving placebo. Subcutaneous ustekinumab maintained remission in patients who had a clinical response to induction therapy.
