Rings and rigidity transitions in network glasses
Three elastic phases of covalent networks, (I) floppy, (II) isostatically
rigid and (III) stressed-rigid have now been identified in glasses at specific
degrees of cross-linking (or chemical composition) both in theory and
experiments. Here we use size-increasing cluster combinatorics and constraint
counting algorithms to study analytically possible consequences of
self-organization. In the presence of small rings that can be locally I, II or
III, we obtain two transitions instead of the previously reported single
percolative transition at the mean coordination number , one from a
floppy to an isostatic rigid phase, and a second one from an isostatic to a
stressed rigid phase. The width of the intermediate phase and the
order of the phase transitions depend on the nature of medium range order
(relative ring fractions). We compare the results to the Group IV
chalcogenides, such as Ge-Se and Si-Se, for which evidence of an intermediate
phase has been obtained, and for which estimates of ring fractions can be made
from structures of high T crystalline phases.Comment: 29 pages, revtex, 7 eps figure
Phase transitions and ordering of confined dipolar fluids
We apply a modified mean-field density functional theory to determine the
phase behavior of Stockmayer fluids in slitlike pores formed by two walls with
identical substrate potentials. Based on the Carnahan-Starling equation of
state, a fundamental-measure theory is employed to incorporate the effects of
short-ranged hard sphere - like correlations while the long-ranged
contributions to the fluid interaction potential are treated perturbatively.
The liquid-vapor, ferromagnetic liquid - vapor, and ferromagnetic liquid -
isotropic liquid first-order phase separations are investigated. The local
orientational structure of the anisotropic and inhomogeneous ferromagnetic
liquid phase is also studied. We discuss how the phase diagrams are shifted and
distorted upon varying the pore width.Comment: 15 pages including 8 figure
Results from the Super Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (SuperCDMS) experiment at Soudan
We report the result of a blinded search for Weakly Interacting Massive
Particles (WIMPs) using the majority of the SuperCDMS Soudan dataset. With an
exposure of 1690 kg days, a single candidate event is observed, consistent with
expected backgrounds. This analysis (combined with previous Ge results) sets an
upper limit on the spin-independent WIMP--nucleon cross section of () cm at 46 GeV/. These results set the
strongest limits for WIMP--germanium-nucleus interactions for masses 12
GeV/
Wavelet Neural Networks: A Practical Guide
Wavelet networks (WNs) are a new class of networks which have been used with great success in a wide range of application. However a general accepted framework for applying WNs is missing from the literature. In this study, we present a complete statistical model identification framework in order to apply WNs in various applications. The following subjects were thorough examined: the structure of a WN, training methods, initialization algorithms, variable significance and variable selection algorithms, model selection methods and finally methods to construct confidence and prediction intervals. In addition the complexity of each algorithm is discussed. Our proposed framework was tested in two simulated cases, in one chaotic time series described by the Mackey-Glass equation and in three real datasets described by daily temperatures in Berlin, daily wind speeds in New York and breast cancer classification. Our results have shown that the proposed algorithms produce stable and robust results indicating that our proposed framework can be applied in various applications
Intrinsic structure and dynamics of the water/nitrobenzene interface
In this paper we present results of a detailed and systematic molecular dynamics study of the water/nitrobenzene interface. Using a simple procedure to eliminate fluctuations of the interface position, we are able to obtain true intrinsic profiles for several properties (density, hydrogen bonds, molecular orientation, etc.) in the direction perpendicular to the interfacial plane. Our results show that both water and organic inter-facial molecules form a tightly packed layer oriented parallel to the interface, with reduced mobility in the perpendicular direction. Beyond this layer, water quickly restores its bulk structure, while nitrobenzene exhibits structural anisotropies that extend further into the bulk region: Water molecules that protrude farthest into the organic phase point one hydrogen atom in the direction perpendicular to the interface, forming a hydrogen bond with a nitrobenzene oxygen. By fitting both the global and the intrinsic density profiles, we obtain estimates for the total and intrinsic interface widths, respectively. These are combined with capillary wave theory to produce a self-consistent method for the calculation of the inter-facial tension. Values calculated using this method are in very good agreement with direct calculations from the components of the pressure tensor
Fibulin-2 Is a Driver of Malignant Progression in Lung Adenocarcinoma
The extracellular matrix of epithelial tumors undergoes structural remodeling during periods of
uncontrolled growth, creating regional heterogeneity and torsional stress. How matrix integrity is
maintained in the face of dynamic biophysical forces is largely undefined. Here we investigated the
role of fibulin-2, a matrix glycoprotein that functions biomechanically as an inter-molecular clasp and
thereby facilitates supra-molecular assembly. Fibulin-2 was abundant in the extracellular matrix of
human lung adenocarcinomas and was highly expressed in tumor cell lines derived from mice that
develop metastatic lung adenocarcinoma from co-expression of mutant K-ras and p53. Loss-offunction
experiments in tumor cells revealed that fibulin-2 was required for tumor cells to grow and
metastasize in syngeneic mice, a surprising finding given that other intra-tumoral cell types are known
to secrete fibulin-2. However, tumor cells grew and metastasized equally well in Fbln2-null and -wildtype
littermates, implying that malignant progression was dependent specifically upon tumor cellderived
fibulin-2, which could not be offset by other cellular sources of fibulin-2. Fibulin-2 deficiency
impaired the ability of tumor cells to migrate and invade in Boyden chambers, to create a stiff
extracellular matrix in mice, to cross-link secreted collagen, and to adhere to collagen. We conclude
that fibulin-2 is a driver of malignant progression in lung adenocarcinoma and plays an unexpected
role in collagen cross-linking and tumor cell adherence to collagen
Nanopillar spin filter tunnel junctions with manganite barriers.
The potential of a manganite ferromagnetic insulator in the field of spin-filtering has been demonstrated. For this, an ultrathin film of Sm0.75Sr0.25MnO3 is integrated as a barrier in an epitaxial oxide nanopillar tunnel junction and a high spin polarization of up to 75% at 5 K has been achieved. A large zero-bias anomaly observed in the dynamic conductance at low temperatures is explained in terms of the Kondo scattering model. In addition, a decrease in spin polarization at low bias and hysteretic magneto-resistance at low temperatures are reported. The results open up new possibilities for spin-electronics and suggest exploration of other manganites-based materials for the room temperature spin-filter applications.This work was partially supported by the ERC Advanced Integrators Grant “SUPERSPIN”.
