Measurement of Spin Transfer Observables in Antiproton-Proton -> Antilambda-Lambda at 1.637 GeV/c
Spin transfer observables for the strangeness-production reaction
Antiproton-Proton -> Antilambda-Lambda have been measured by the PS185
collaboration using a transversely-polarized frozen-spin target with an
antiproton beam momentum of 1.637 GeV/c at the Low Energy Antiproton Ring at
CERN. This measurement investigates observables for which current models of the
reaction near threshold make significantly differing predictions. Those models
are in good agreement with existing measurements performed with unpolarized
particles in the initial state. Theoretical attention has focused on the fact
that these models produce conflicting predictions for the spin-transfer
observables D_{nn} and K_{nn}, which are measurable only with polarized target
or beam. Results presented here for D_{nn} and K_{nn} are found to be in
disagreement with predictions from existing models. These results also
underscore the importance of singlet-state production at backward angles, while
current models predict complete or near-complete triplet-state dominance.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Parton Distributions for the Octet and Decuplet Baryons
We calculate the parton distributions for both polarized and unpolarized
octet and decuplet baryons, using the MIT bag, dressed by mesons. We show that
the hyperfine interaction responsible for the and splittings leads to large deviations from SU(3) and SU(6) predictions.
For the we find significant polarized, non-strange parton
distributions which lead to a sizable polarization in polarized,
semi-inclusive scattering. We also discuss the flavour symmetry violation
arising from the meson-cloud associated with the chiral structure of baryons.Comment: 29 pages, 15 figure
Structure and Production of Lambda Baryons
We discuss the quark parton structure of the baryon and the
fragmentation of quarks into baryons. We show that the hyperfine
interaction, responsible for the - and - mass
splittings, leads not only to sizeable SU(3) and SU(6) symmetry breaking in the
quark distributions of the , but also to significant polarized
non-strange quark distributions. The same arguments suggest flavor asymmetric
quark fragmentation functions and non-zero polarized non-strange quark
fragmentation functions. The calculated fragmentation functions give a good
description of all measured observables. We predict significant positive
polarization in semi-inclusive DIS experiments while models based on
SU(3) flavor symmetry predict zero or negative polarization. Our
approach also provides a natural explanation for the dependence of the maximum
of the spectrum on the mass of the particles produced in

We consider low- behaviour of the spin structure functions and
in the unitarized chiral quark model which combines ideas on the
constituent quark structure of hadrons with a geometrical scattering picture
and unitarity. A nondiffractive singular low- dependence of and
indicated by the recent SMC experimental data is described. A
diffractive type smooth behaviour of is predicted at small . The
expectations for the double-spin asymmetries in the low-mass Drell-Yan

Study of the reaction pbar p -> phi phi from 1.1 to 2.0 GeV/c
A study has been performed of the reaction pbar p -> 4K using in-flight
antiprotons from 1.1 to 2.0 GeV/c incident momentum interacting with a hydrogen
jet target. The reaction is dominated by the production of a pair of phi
mesons. The pbar p -> phi phi cross section rises sharply above threshold and
then falls continuously as a function of increasing antiproton momentum. The
overall magnitude of the cross section exceeds expectations from a simple
application of the OZI rule by two orders of magnitude. In a fine scan around
the xi/f_J(2230) resonance, no structure is observed. A limit is set for the
double branching ratio B(xi -> pbar p) * B(xi -> phi phi) < 6e-5 for a spin 2
resonance of M = 2.235 GeV and Width = 15 MeV.Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables, Latex. To be published in Phys. Rev.
Experimental determination of the complete spin structure for anti-proton + proton -> anti-\Lambda + \Lambda at anti-proton beam momentum of 1.637 GeV/c
The reaction anti-proton + proton -> anti-\Lambda + \Lambda -> anti-proton +
\pi^+ + proton + \pi^- has been measured with high statistics at anti-proton
beam momentum of 1.637 GeV/c. The use of a transversely-polarized frozen-spin
target combined with the self-analyzing property of \Lambda/anti-\Lambda decay
allows access to unprecedented information on the spin structure of the
interaction. The most general spin-scattering matrix can be written in terms of
eleven real parameters for each bin of scattering angle, each of these
parameters is determined with reasonable precision. From these results all
conceivable spin-correlations are determined with inherent self-consistency.
Good agreement is found with the few previously existing measurements of spin
observables in anti-proton + proton -> anti-\Lambda + \Lambda near this energy.
Existing theoretical models do not give good predictions for those

Strangeness production in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions
In these lectures we discuss the investigation of the strange meson
production in proton-proton () and in proton-nucleus () reactions
within an effective Lagrangian model. The kaon production proceeds mainly via
the excitations of (1650), (1710), and (1720) resonant
intermediate nucleonic states, in the collision of two initial state nucleons.
Therefore, the strangeness production is expected to provide information about
the resonances lying at higher excitation energies. For beam energies very
close to the kaon production threshold the hyperon-proton final state
interaction effects are quite important. Thus, these studies provide a check on
the models of hyperon-nucleon interactions. The in-medium production of kaons
show strong sensitivity to the self energies of the intermediate mesons.Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, Talk presented in the workshop on Hadron

Semi-Classical Description of Antiproton Capture on Atomic Helium
A semi-classical, many-body atomic model incorporating a momentum-dependent
Heisenberg core to stabilize atomic electrons is used to study antiproton
capture on Helium. Details of the antiproton collisions leading to eventual
capture are presented, including the energy and angular momentum states of
incident antiprotons which result in capture via single or double electron
ionization, i.e. into [He or He], and the
distribution of energy and angular momentum states following the Auger cascade.
These final states are discussed in light of recently reported, anomalously
long-lived antiproton states observed in liquid He.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures may be obtained from authors, Revte
Relativistic Effects in the Scalar Meson Dynamics
A separable potential formalism is used to describe the and
interactions in the scalar-isoscalar states in the energy range
from the threshold up to 1.4 GeV. Introduction of relativistic
propagators into a system of Lippmann-Schwinger equations leads to a very good
description of the data ( per one degree of freedom). Three
poles are found in this energy region: fo(500) ( MeV,
MeV), fo(975) ( MeV, MeV) and
fo(1400) ( MeV, MeV). The fo(975) state can be
interpreted as a bound state. The fo(500) state may be
associated with the often postulated very broad scalar resonance under the
threshold (sometimes called or meson). The
scattering lengths in the and channels have also been
obtained. The relativistic approach provides qualitatively new results (e.g.
the appearance of the fo(500)) in comparison with previously used

Antimicrobial use in European acute care hospitals: results from the second point prevalence survey (PPS) of healthcare-associated infections and antimicrobial use, 2016 to 2017
Antimicrobial agents used to treat infections are life-saving. Overuse may result in more frequent adverse effects and emergence of multidrug-resistant microorganisms. In 2016-17, we performed the second point-prevalence survey (PPS) of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and antimicrobial use in European acute care hospitals. We included 1,209 hospitals and 310,755 patients in 28 of 31 European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA) countries. The weighted prevalence of antimicrobial use in the EU/EEA was 30.5% (95% CI: 29.2-31.9%). The most common indication for prescribing antimicrobials was treatment of a community-acquired infection, followed by treatment of HAI and surgical prophylaxis. Over half (54.2%) of antimicrobials for surgical prophylaxis were prescribed for more than 1 day. The most common infections treated by antimicrobials were respiratory tract infections and the most commonly prescribed antimicrobial agents were penicillins with beta-lactamase inhibitors. There was wide variation of patients on antimicrobials, in the selection of antimicrobial agents and in antimicrobial stewardship resources and activities across the participating countries. The results of the PPS provide detailed information on antimicrobial use in European acute care hospitals, enable comparisons between countries and hospitals, and highlight key areas for national and European action that will support efforts towards prudent use of antimicrobials
