Forecast analysis of optical waveguide bus performance
Elements to be considered in the design of a data bus include: architecture; data rate; modulation, encoding, detection; power distribution requirements; protocol, work structure; bus reliability, maintainability; interterminal transmission medium; cost; and others specific to application. Fiber- optic data bus considerations for a 32 port transmissive star architecture, are discussed in a tutorial format. General optical-waveguide bus concepts, are reviewed. The electrical and optical performance of a 32 port transmissive star bus, and the effects of temperature on the performance of optical-waveguide buses are examined. A bibliography of pertinent references and the bus receiver test results are included
Liquid droplets act as "compass needles" for the stresses in a deformable membrane
We examine the shape of droplets atop deformable thin elastomeric films
prepared with an anisotropic tension. As the droplets generate a deformation in
the taut film through capillary forces, they assume a shape that is elongated
along the high tension direction. By measuring the contact line profile, the
tension in the membrane can be completely determined. Minimal theoretical
arguments lead to predictions for the droplet shape and membrane deformation
that are in excellent agreement with the data. On the whole, the results
demonstrate that droplets can be used as probes to map out the stress field in
a membrane

Reanalysis of the FEROS observations of HIP 11952
Aims. We reanalyze FEROS observations of the star HIP 11952 to reassess the
existence of the proposed planetary system. Methods. The radial velocity of the
spectra were measured by cross-correlating the observed spectrum with a
synthetic template. We also analyzed a large dataset of FEROS and HARPS
archival data of the calibrator HD 10700 spanning over more than five years. We
compared the barycentric velocities computed by the FEROS and HARPS pipelines.
Results. The barycentric correction of the FEROS-DRS pipeline was found to be
inaccurate and to introduce an artificial one-year period with a semi-amplitude
of 62 m/s. Thus the reanalysis of the FEROS data does not support the existence

Voltage dip generator for testing wind turbines connected to electrical networks
This paper describes a new voltage dip generator that allows the shape of the time profile of the voltage generated to be configured. The use of this device as a tool to test the fault ride-through capability of wind turbines connected to the electricity grid can provide some remarkable benefits: First, this system offers the possibility of adapting the main features of the time–voltage profile generated (dip depth, dip duration, the ramp slope during the recovery process after clearing fault, etc.) to the specific requirements set forth by the grid operation codes, in accordance with different network electrical systems standards. Second, another remarkable ability of this system is to provide sinusoidal voltage and current wave forms during the overall testing process without the presence of harmonic components. This is made possible by the absence of electronic converters. Finally, the paper includes results and a discussion on the experimental data obtained with the use of a reduced size laboratory prototype that was constructed to validate the operating features of this new device
Planetary companions around the metal-poor star HIP 11952
Aims. We carried out a radial-velocity survey to search for planets around
metal-poor stars. In this paper we report the discovery of two planets around
HIP 11952, a metal-poor star with [Fe/H]= -1.9 that belongs to our target
sample. Methods. Radial velocity variations of HIP 11952 were monitored
systematically with FEROS at the 2.2 m telescope located at the ESO La Silla
observatory from August 2009 until January 2011. We used a cross-correlation
technique to measure the stellar radial velocities (RV). Results. We detected a
long-period RV variation of 290 d and a short-period one of 6.95 d. The
spectroscopic analysis of the stellar activity reveals a stellar rotation
period of 4.8 d. The Hipparcos photometry data shows intra-day variabilities,
which give evidence for stellar pulsations. Based on our analysis, the observed
RV variations are most likely caused by the presence of unseen planetary
companions. Assuming a primary mass of 0.83 M\odot, we computed minimum
planetary masses of 0.78 MJup for the inner and 2.93 MJup for the outer planet.
The semi-major axes are a1 = 0.07 AU and a2 = 0.81 AU, respectively.
Conclusions. HIP 11952 is one of very few stars with [Fe/H]< -1.0 which have
planetary companions. This discovery is important to understand planet

Ilustración, Modernidad e Identidad en América latina
El objetivo del presente Proyecto es el de posibilitar un ámbito de investigación, de discusión y de crítica, acerca de las Implicaciones éticas y políticas en el discurso sobre el bicentenario de América Latina, acontecimiento que se conmemorará en buena parte de los países de la región a partir del año 2010. Se considera que el problema sobre el cual recae el Proyecto, a saber, Ilustración, Modernidad e identidad social en América Latina, cumple con el objetivo enunciado, en otras palabras, resulta pertinente y relevante. En efecto, resulta pertinente, según consideramos, pues trabaja una problemática que permite comprender y eventualmente explicar los movimientos independentistas que se dieron en varios países de América Latina en las primeras décadas del siglo 19. También es relevante, dado que suministra elementos necesarios para reflexionar y analizar sobre las consecuencias actuales, éticas y políticas, de aquellos acontecimientos. Se trabajan los siguientes aspectos. En primer lugar, se intenta mostrar la relación histórica entre la gesta independentista, el fenómeno de la Ilustración y el problema de la identidad. En segundo lugar, se incluye a la Ilustración como un aspecto central de la Modernidad y se plantean las relaciones entre Modernidad e Identidad en general y en América Latina, en particular, relevándose los antecedentes bibliográficos sobre la cuestión
Under-reporting bicycle accidents to police in the COST TU1101 international survey: Cross-country comparisons and associated factors
Police crash reports are often the main source for official data in many countries. However, with the exception of fatal crashes, crashes are often underreported in a biased manner. Consequently, the countermeasures adopted according to them may be inefficient. In the case of bicycle crashes, this bias is most acute and it probably varies across countries, with some of them being more prone to reporting accidents to police than others. Assessing if this bias occurs and the size of it can be of great importance for evaluating the risks associated with bicycling. This study utilized data collected in the COST TU1101 action “Towards safer bicycling through optimization of bicycle helmets and usage”. The data came from an online survey that included questions related to bicyclists' attitudes, behaviour, cycling habits, accidents, and patterns of use of helmets. The survey was filled by 8655 bicyclists from 30 different countries. After applying various exclusion factors, 7015 questionnaires filled by adult cyclists from 17 countries, each with at least 100 valid responses, remained in our sample. The results showed that across all countries, an average of only 10% of all crashes were reported to the police, with a wide range among countries: from a minimum of 0.0% (Israel) and 2.6% (Croatia) to a maximum of a 35.0% (Germany). Some factors associated with the reporting levels were type of crash, type of vehicle involved, and injury severity. No relation was found between the likelihood of reporting and the cyclist's gender, age, educational level, marital status, being a parent, use of helmet, and type of bicycle. The significant under-reporting – including injury crashes that do not lead to hospitalization – justifies the use of self-report survey data for assessment of bicycling crash patterns as they relate to (1) crash risk issues such as location, infrastructure, cyclists' characteristics, and use of helmet and (2) strategic approaches to bicycle crash prevention and injury reduction.Fil: Shinar, D..
