    Conditions for Adiabatic Spin Transport in Disordered Systems

    We address the controversy concerning the necessary conditions for the observation of Berry phases in disordered mesoscopic conductors. For this purpose we calculate the spin-dependent conductance of disordered two-dimensional structures in the presence of inhomogeneous magnetic fields. Our numerical results show that for both, the overall conductance and quantum corrections, the relevant parameter defining adiabatic spin transport scales with the square root of the number of scattering events, in generalization of Stern's original proposal [Phys. Rev. Lett. 68, 1022 (1992)]. This could hinder a clear-cut experimental observation of Berry phase effects in diffusive metallic rings.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. To appear in Phys. Rev.     Berry phase and persistent current in disordered mesoscopic rings

    A novel quantum interference effect in disordered quasi-one-dimensional rings in the inhomogeneous magnetic field is reported. We calculate the canonical disorder averaged persistent current using the diagrammatic perturbation theory. It is shown that within the adiabatic regime the average current oscillates as a function of the geometric flux which is related to the Berry phase and the period becomes half the value of the case of a single one-dimensional ring.     Cross-linguistic study of vocal pathology: perceptual features of spasmodic dysphonia in French-speaking subjects

    Clinical characterisation of Spasmodic Dysphonia of the adductor type (SD) in French speakers by Klap and colleagues (1993) appears to differ from that of SD in English. This perceptual analysis aims to describe the phonetic features of French SD. A video of 6 French speakers with SD supplied by Klap and colleagues was analysed for frequency of phonatory breaks, pitch breaks, harshness, creak, breathiness and falsetto voice, rate of production, and quantity of speech output. In contrast to English SD, the French speaking SD patients demonstrated no evidence pitch breaks, but phonatory breaks, harshness and breathiness were prominent features. This verifies the French authors’ (1993) clinical description. These findings suggest that phonetic properties of a specific language may affect the manifestation of pathology in neurogenic voice disorders

    Lifetime of the Bose Gas with Resonant Interactions

    We study the lifetime of a Bose gas at and around unitarity using a Feshbach resonance in lithium~7. At unitarity, we measure the temperature dependence of the three-body decay coefficient L3L_{3}. Our data follow a L3=λ3/T2L_3 {=} \lambda_{3} / T^{2} law with \lambda_{3} = 2.5(3)_{stat}_(6)_{sys} 10^{-20} (\mu K)^2 cm^6 s^{-1} and are in good agreement with our analytical result based on the zero-range theory. Varying the scattering length aa at fixed temperature, we investigate the crossover between the finite-temperature unitary region and the previously studied regime where a|a| is smaller than the thermal wavelength. We find that L3L_{3} is continuous across resonance, and over the whole a<0a {<} 0 range our data quantitatively agree with our calculation

    Intensity distribution for waves in disordered media: deviations from Rayleigh statistics

    We study the intensity distribution function, P(I), for monochromatic waves propagating in quasi one-dimensional disordered medium, assuming that a point source and a point detector are embedded in the bulk of the medium. We find deviations from the Rayleigh statistics at moderately large I and a logarithmically-normal asymptotic behavior of P(I). When the radiation source and the detector are located close to the opposite edges of the sample (on a distance much less then the sample length), an intermediate regime with a stretched-exponential behavior of P(I) emerges.Comment: 4 pages Revtex, 3 figures included as eps file

    Multi-level Dynamical Systems: Connecting the Ruelle Response Theory and the Mori-Zwanzig Approach

    In this paper we consider the problem of deriving approximate autonomous dynamics for a number of variables of a dynamical system, which are weakly coupled to the remaining variables. In a previous paper we have used the Ruelle response theory on such a weakly coupled system to construct a surrogate dynamics, such that the expectation value of any observable agrees, up to second order in the coupling strength, to its expectation evaluated on the full dynamics. We show here that such surrogate dynamics agree up to second order to an expansion of the Mori-Zwanzig projected dynamics. This implies that the parametrizations of unresolved processes suited for prediction and for the representation of long term statistical properties are closely related, if one takes into account, in addition to the widely adopted stochastic forcing, the often neglected memory effects.Comment: 14 pages, 1 figur

    Berry phase and adiabaticity of a spin diffusing in a non-uniform magnetic field

    An electron spin moving adiabatically in a strong, spatially non-uniform magnetic field accumulates a geometric phase or Berry phase, which might be observable as a conductance oscillation in a mesoscopic ring. Two contradicting theories exist for how strong the magnetic field should be to ensure adiabaticity if the motion is diffusive. To resolve this controversy, we study the effect of a non-uniform magnetic field on the spin polarization and on the weak-localization effect. The diffusion equation for the Cooperon is solved exactly. Adiabaticity requires that the spin-precession time is short compared to the elastic scattering time - it is not sufficient that it is short compared to the diffusion time around the ring.     Aharonov-Bohm Physics with Spin II: Spin-Flip Effects in Two-dimensional Ballistic Systems

    We study spin effects in the magneto-conductance of ballistic mesoscopic systems subject to inhomogeneous magnetic fields. We present a numerical approach to the spin-dependent Landauer conductance which generalizes recursive Green function techniques to the case with spin. Based on this method we address spin-flip effects in quantum transport of spin-polarized and -unpolarized electrons through quantum wires and various two-dimensional Aharonov-Bohm geometries. In particular, we investigate the range of validity of a spin switch mechanism recently found which allows for controlling spins indirectly via Aharonov-Bohm fluxes. Our numerical results are compared to a transfer-matrix model for one-dimensional ring structures presented in the first paper (Hentschel et al., submitted to Phys. Rev.
