    Chemical and microbiological stability of the low caliber apple slices prepared by osmotic dehydration

    Osmotic dehydration has received greater attention in recent years as an effective method for fruits and vegetables preservation. Process for preparation of Royal Gala apple slices using osmotic dehydration was standardized. The study was carried out with seleted apples of smaller caliber, produced in the Alcobaça region. For this study apples were seleted by their degree of maturation and absence of mechanical damages. Fully apple fruits were peeled and slices of 4 mm thickness were prepared. The apple slices were immersed in a sucrose solution (50% w/w) and in sucrose/sodium chloride solutions with NaCl concentrations (1% and 3%). After 4 h soaking, quick washing, blotting, the samples where drying at 20 °C up to constant weight. The dried products were packed in glass containers and stored at ambient conditions. The chemical and microbial and stability were monitored for 6 months. The osmo-dried apple slices prepared with 50% sucrose/1% sodium chloride showed an overall chemical acceptability (aw of 0.192; °Brix of 26.3; pH of 3.82; Na content of 0.51g/100g). Microbiologically the product was stable (aerobic mesophile osmotolerant or osmophilic bactéria counts < 2.75 log cfu g-1; fungi counts < 1.75 log cfu g-1) and safe (Clostridium spores and Staphylococcus were not confirmed in this study) up to 6 months of storage at ambient conditions.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Evolutionary Multi-objective Scheduling for Anti-Spam Filtering Throughput Optimization

    This paper presents an evolutionary multi-objective optimization problem formulation for the anti-spam filtering problem, addressing both the classification quality criteria (False Positive and False Negative error rates) and email messages classification time (minimization). This approach is compared to single objective problem formulations found in the literature, and its advantages for decision support and flexible/adaptive anti-spam filtering configuration is demonstrated. A study is performed using the Wirebrush4SPAM framework anti-spam filtering and the SpamAssassin email dataset. The NSGA-II evolutionary multi-objective optimization algorithm was applied for the purpose of validating and demonstrating the adoption of this novel approach to the anti-spam filtering optimization problem, formulated from the multi-objective optimization perspective. The results obtained from the experiments demonstrated that this optimization strategy allows the decision maker (anti-spam filtering system administrator) to select among a set of optimal and flexible filter configuration alternatives with respect to classification quality and classification efficiency

    Queue-priority optimized algorithm: a novel task scheduling for runtime systems of application integration platforms

    The need for integration of applications and services in business processes from enterprises has increased with the advancement of cloud and mobile applications. Enterprises started dealing with high volumes of data from the cloud and from mobile applications, besides their own. This is the reason why integration tools must adapt themselves to handle with high volumes of data, and to exploit the scalability of cloud computational resources without increasing enterprise operations costs. Integration platforms are tools that integrate enterprises’ applications through integration processes, which are nothing but workflows composed of a set of atomic tasks connected through communication channels. Many integration platforms schedule tasks to be executed by computational resources through the First-in-first-out heuristic. This article proposes a Queue-priority algorithm that uses a novel heuristic and tackles high volumes of data in the task scheduling of integration processes. This heuristic is optimized by the Particle Swarm Optimization computational method. The results of our experiments were confirmed by statistical tests, and validated the proposal as a feasible alternative to improve integration platforms in the execution of integration processes under a high volume of data.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

    Task scheduling characterisation in enterprise application integration

    Cloud computing allows enterprises to incorporate applications and computational resources as services, and thus, enterprises can concentrate on their business processes, without concerning the development, configuration and maintenance of these applications and resources. Integration platforms are one of these services that allow enterprises to integrate applications in order to reduce the maintenance costs and operations of the integration of on-premises platforms. However, high performance on resources offered by the cloud, demands improvement in task scheduling of integration platforms. Our literature review has identified a lack of studies in the field of enterprise application integration, focusing on specificities and vulnerabilities of the task scheduling of integration processes. This is a pioneer work regarding the characterisation of the scheduling of tasks of integration processes. We propose a ranking according to their conceptual models and apply this ranking to five integration processes. Then, we have statistically analysed the influence of each component of their conceptual models on the performance of the execution of these integration processes. We characterise the task scheduling of integration processes and presented a mathematical equation for the makespan as a function of the components of this characterisation. This study can guide software engineers in the optimal task scheduling for integration processes, which can improve the performance runtime systems regarding using the computational resources and result in minimisation of costs of companies.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

    An ontology knowledge inspection methodology for quality assessment and continuous improvement

    Ontology-learning methods were introduced in the knowledge engineering area to automatically build ontologies from natural language texts related to a domain. Despite the initial appeal of these methods, automatically generated ontologies may have errors, inconsistencies, and a poor design quality, all of which must be manually fixed, in order to maintain the validity and usefulness of automated output. In this work, we propose a methodology to assess ontologies quality (quantitatively and graphically) and to fix ontology inconsistencies minimising design defects. The proposed methodology is based on the Deming cycle and is grounded on quality standards that proved effective in the software engineering domain and present high potential to be extended to knowledge engineering quality management. This paper demonstrates that software engineering quality assessment approaches and techniques can be successfully extended and applied to the ontology-fixing and quality improvement problem.     Are lead-free relaxor ferroelectric materials the most promising candidates for energy storage capacitors?

    Dielectric capacitors offer high-power density and ultrafast discharging times as compared to electrochemical capacitors and batteries, making them potential candidates for pulsed power technologies (PPT). However, low energy density in different dielectric materials such as linear dielectrics (LDs), ferroelectrics (FEs), and anti-ferroelectric (AFEs) owing to their low polarization, large hysteresis loss and low breakdown strength, respectively, limits their real time applications. Thus, achieving a material with high dielectric constant, large dielectric breakdown strength and slim hysteresis is imperative to obtain superior energy performance. In this context, relaxor ferroelectrics (RFEs) emerged as the most promising solution for energy storage capacitors. This review starts with a brief introduction of different energy storage devices and current advances of dielectric capacitors in PPT. The latest developments on lead-free RFEs including bismuth alkali titanate based, barium titanate based, alkaline niobite based perovskites both in ceramics and thin films are comprehensively discussed. Further, we highlight the different strategies used to enhance their energy storage performance to meet the requirements of the energy storage world.     Optimizing anti-spam filters with evolutionary algorithms

The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.This work is devoted to the problem of optimising scores for anti-spam filters, which is essential for the accuracy of any filter based anti-spam system, and is also one of the biggest challenges in this research area. In particular, this optimisation problem is considered from two different points of view: single and multiobjective problem formulations. Some of existing approaches within both formulations are surveyed, and their advantages and disadvantages are discussed. Two most popular evolutionary multiobjective algorithms and one single objective algorithm are adapted to optimisation of the anti-spam filters’ scores and compared on publicly available datasets widely used for benchmarking purposes. This comparison is discussed, and the recommendations for the developers and users of optimising anti-spam filters are provided

    A multicriteria model for solving a real cutting layout problem in publishing industry.

    A cutting layout problem is analyzed taking into account the need to use standard-sized sheets of material for printing patterns with different size, type and print run. In this paper a multicriteria model is proposed for cutting layout problem and for printing an additional print run in particular. The multicriteria formulation of the cutting layout problem is considered, where the material waste, the number of the nesting patterns and the cutting layout cost are minimized simultaneously. The paper provides an approach to solve the problem using the additive multicriteria estimation. The efficiency of the proposed multicriteria model is tested for a series of computational experiments

The definitive version was published in Journal of Cell Biology 184 (2009): 373-381, doi:10.1083/jcb.200808130.Cells have evolved a signaling pathway called the spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC) to increase the fidelity of chromosome segregation by generating a "wait anaphase" signal until all chromosomes are properly aligned within the mitotic spindle. It has been proposed that tension generated by the stretch of the centromeric chromatin of bioriented chromosomes stabilizes kinetochore microtubule attachments and turns off SAC activity. Although biorientation clearly causes stretching of the centromeric chromatin, it is unclear whether the kinetochore is also stretched. To test whether intrakinetochore stretch occurs and is involved in SAC regulation, we developed a Drosophila melanogaster S2 cell line expressing centromere identifier–mCherry and Ndc80–green fluorescent protein to mark the inner and outer kinetochore domains, respectively. We observed stretching within kinetochores of bioriented chromosomes by monitoring both inter- and intrakinetochore distances in live cell assays. This intrakinetochore stretch is largely independent of a 30-fold variation in centromere stretch. Furthermore, loss of intrakinetochore stretch is associated with enhancement of 3F3/2 phosphorylation and SAC activation.This work was supported by the American Cancer Society (grant PF0711401 to T.J.
