    Panorama Jurídico sobre a Proteção dos Refugiados de Guerra e Ambientais

    Resumo: Em decorrência da flagrante violação dos direitos humanos perpetrada por vários Estados e da ocorrência de diversos desastres ambientais, assiste-se ao aumento do número de refugiados que deixam seus países em busca de asilo e proteção jurídica. Uma análise que capture as condicionantes que desencadeiam este processo de deslocamento é sem dúvida necessária. O presente artigo, assim, tem por objetivo realçar o empreendimento de esforços globais tanto aos refugiados de guerra quanto aos refugiados ambientais, acentuando as consequências legais sobre esse grupo de indivíduos que se deparam com diversos obstáculos para regressar em segurança aos seus países de origem. Palavras-Chave: Refugiados de Guerra; Direitos Humanos; Refugiados Ambientais; Alterações Ecossistêmicas; Estatuto dos Refugiados de 1951. Abstract: Due to human rights violations perpetrated by various States or the occurrence of several environmental disasters, society witnesses the increasing number of refugees who leave their countries in search of asylum and legal protection. An analysis that captures the conditions that trigger this process of displacement is undoubtedly needed. Thus, this article aims to enhance the development of global efforts to both political and environmental refugees, stressing the legal and psychological consequences about this group of individuals who are unable to return safely to their countries of origin. Keywords: War refugees; Human rights; Environmental refugees; Ecosystem changes; 1951 Refugee Convention.   

    Radiofrequency cardiac ablation with catheters placed on opposing sides of the ventricular wall: Computer modelling comparing bipolar and unipolar modes

    Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of bipolar (BM) vs. unipolar (UM) mode of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in terms of creating transmural lesions across the interventricular septum (IVS) and ventricular free wall (VFW). Materials and methods: We built computational models to study the temperature distributions and lesion dimensions created by BM and UM on IVS and VFW during RFA. Two different UM types were considered: sequential (SeUM) and simultaneous (SiUM). The effect of ventricular wall thickness, catheter misalignment, epicardial fat, and presence of air in the epicardial space were also studied. Results: Regarding IVS ablation, BM created transmural and symmetrical lesions for wall thicknesses up to 15 mm. SeUM and SiUM were not able to create transmural lesions with IVS thicknesses >= 12.5 and 15 mm, respectively. Lesions were asymmetrical only with SeUM. For VFW ablation, BM also created transmural lesions for wall thicknesses up to 15 mm. However, with SeUM and SiUM transmurality was obtained for VFW thicknesses <= 7.5 and 12.5 mm, respectively. With the three modes, VFW lesions were always asymmetrical. In the scenario with air or a fat tissue layer on the epicardial side, only SiUM was capable of creating transmural lesions. Overall, BM was superior to UM in IVS and VFW ablation when the catheters were not aligned. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that BM is more effective than UM in achieving transmurality across both ventricular sites, except in the situation of the epicardial catheter tip surrounded by air or placed over a fat tissue layer.This work received financial support from the Spanish 'Plan Nacional de I+D+I del Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovacion' (TEC2011-27133-C02-01), and from the Universitat Politecnica de Valencia (PAID-06-11 Ref. 1988).     A Genome-Wide Screening and SNPs-to-Genes Approach to Identify Novel Genetic Risk Factors Associated with Frontotemporal Dementia

    Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is the second most prevalent form of early onset dementia after Alzheimer’s disease (AD). We performed a case-control association study in an Italian FTD cohort (n = 530) followed by the novel SNPs-to-genes approach and functional annotation analysis. We identified two novel potential loci for FTD. Suggestive SNPs reached p-values ~10-7 and OR > 2.5 (2p16.3) and 1.5 (17q25.3). Suggestive alleles at 17q25.3 identified a disease-associated haplotype causing decreased expression of -cis genes such as RFNG and AATK involved in neuronal genesis and differentiation, and axon outgrowth, respectively. We replicated this locus through the SNPs-to-genes approach. Our functional annotation analysis indicated significant enrichment for functions of the brain (neuronal genesis, differentiation and maturation), the synapse (neurotransmission and synapse plasticity), and elements of the immune system, the latter supporting our recent international FTD-GWAS. This is the largest genome-wide study in Italian FTD to date. Although our results are not conclusive, we set the basis for future replication studies and identification of susceptible molecular mechanisms involved in FTD pathogenesis

    O Projeto Quintais tem como objetivo contribuir com a sustentabilidade social, econômica e ambiental de públicos em situação de vulnerabilidade e de risco social, econômico e alimentar. Para a composição dos quintais, são adotadas três plantas frutíferas, provenientes de um conjunto de 20 espécies, sementes de feijão e milho, mudas de três cultivares de batata doce, mudas de uma espécie forrageira e de doze espécies de plantas medicinais, totalizando 38 produtos cultivados no interior de cada Quintal.     Fast relational learning using bottom clause propositionalization with artificial neural networks

    Relational learning can be described as the task of learning first-order logic rules from examples. It has enabled a number of new machine learning applications, e.g. graph mining and link analysis. Inductive Logic Programming (ILP) performs relational learning either directly by manipulating first-order rules or through propositionalization, which translates the relational task into an attribute-value learning task by representing subsets of relations as features. In this paper, we introduce a fast method and system for relational learning based on a novel propositionalization called Bottom Clause Propositionalization (BCP). Bottom clauses are boundaries in the hypothesis search space used by ILP systems Progol and Aleph. Bottom clauses carry semantic meaning and can be mapped directly onto numerical vectors, simplifying the feature extraction process. We have integrated BCP with a well-known neural-symbolic system, C-IL2P, to perform learning from numerical vectors. C-IL2P uses background knowledge in the form of propositional logic programs to build a neural network. The integrated system, which we call CILP++, handles first-order logic knowledge and is available for download from Sourceforge. We have evaluated CILP++ on seven ILP datasets, comparing results with Aleph and a well-known propositionalization method, RSD. The results show that CILP++ can achieve accuracy comparable to Aleph, while being generally faster, BCP achieved statistically significant improvement in accuracy in comparison with RSD when running with a neural network, but BCP and RSD perform similarly when running with C4.5. We have also extended CILP++ to include a statistical feature selection method, mRMR, with preliminary results indicating that a reduction of more than 90 % of features can be achieved with a small loss of accuracy

    Natural infection by the protozoan Leptomonas wallacei impacts the morphology, physiology, reproduction, and lifespan of the insect Oncopeltus fasciatus

    Trypanosomatids are protozoan parasites that infect thousands of globally dispersed hosts, potentially affecting their physiology. Several species of trypanosomatids are commonly found in phytophagous insects. Leptomonas wallacei is a gut-restricted insect trypanosomatid only retrieved from Oncopeltus fasciatus. The insects get infected by coprophagy and transovum transmission of L. wallacei cysts. The main goal of the present study was to investigate the effects of a natural infection by L. wallacei on the hemipteran insect O. fasciatus, by comparing infected and uninfected individuals in a controlled environment. The L. wallacei-infected individuals showed reduced lifespan and morphological alterations. Also, we demonstrated a higher infection burden in females than in males. The infection caused by L. wallacei reduced host reproductive fitness by negatively impacting egg load, oviposition, and eclosion, and promoting an increase in egg reabsorption. Moreover, we associated the egg reabsorption observed in infected females, with a decrease in the intersex gene expression. Finally, we suggest alterations in population dynamics induced by L. wallacei infection using a mathematical model. Collectively, our findings demonstrated that L. wallacei infection negatively affected the physiology of O. fasciatus, which suggests that L. wallacei potentially has a vast ecological impact on host population growth
