This paper presents five new possible fortified settlements recently identified using remote sensing techniques in modern day province of Soria: La Vega and La Magdalena (Quintanas de Gormaz), La Llana-Caño (Bayubas de Abajo), Vega Fría (Berlanga de Duero) and Las Pozas (Aldealafuente). The morpho-typological characteristics and settlement patterns allow us to hypothesize that these are the remains of Roman temporary military sites. The exhaustive analysis of these new archaeological data could have considerable relevance for studying the expansion of the Roman state in this region during the Late Republic (2nd to 1st c. II-I a. C.)

AC held a Margarita Salas Postdoctoral Research Fellow funded by European Union NextGenerationEU/PRTR.G-protein-gated inwardly rectifying potassium (GIRK) channels are critical determinants of neuronal excitability. They have been proposed as potential targets to restore excitatory/inhibitory balance in acute amyloidosis models, where hyperexcitability is a hallmark. However, the role of GIRK signaling in transgenic mice models of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is largely unknown. Here, we study whether progressive amyloid-β (Aβ) accumulation in the hippocampus during aging alters GIRK channel expression in mutant β-amyloid precursor protein (APP J9) transgenic AD mice. Additionally, we examine the impact of spatial memory training in a hippocampal-dependent task, on protein expression of GIRK subunits and Regulator of G-protein signaling 7 (RGS7) in the hippocampus of APP J9 mice. Firstly, we found a reduction in GIRK2 expression (the main neuronal GIRK channels subunit) in the hippocampus of 6-month-old APP J9 mice. Moreover, we found an aging effect on GIRK2 and GIRK3 subunits in both wild type (WT) and APP J9 mice. Finally, when 6-month-old animals were challenged to a spatial memory training, GIRK2 expression in the APP J9 mice were normalized to WT levels. Together, our results support the evidence that GIRK2 could account for the excitatory/inhibitory neurotransmission imbalance found in AD models, and training in a cognitive hippocampal dependent task may have therapeutic benefits of reversing this effect and lessen early AD deficits

Introduction: Neonatal jaundice is one of the most common conditions in newborns; however, improper treatment can be harmful to the patient, despite being benign. Objective: To determine the predisposing factors of neonatal jaundice in patients discharged from the neonatal ICU of Los Angeles children's Hospital in the city of Pasto (Nariño) between January 2007and August 2011. Materials and methods: An observational, descriptive, retrospective and quantitative study was conducted. 608 clinical histories of discharged infants diagnosed with neonatal jaundice were studied. The variables studied were analyzed with the complement of Excel, XLSTAT-Pro 7.5.2. Results: The main predisposing factors found in the population were exclusive breastfeeding and male gender in 87%, and 57.40% respectively; besides, 90.79% were newborns at term, 92.93% had adequate weight for their gestational age and 54.93% presented neonatal jaundice between 2 and 7 days of extrauterine life. Conclusions: Neonatal jaundice is associated with both modifiable and non-modifiable maternal and neonatal factors that can be addressed with appropriate strategies to reduce the burden of disease

Immunoliposome-mediated drug delivery to Plasmodium-infected and non-infected red blood cells as a dual therapeutic/prophylactic antimalarial stragegy

One of the most important factors behind resistance evolution in malaria is the failure to deliver sufficiently high amounts of drugs to early stages of Plasmodium-infected red blood cells (pRBCs). Despite having been considered for decades as a promising approach, the delivery of antimalarials encapsulated in immunoliposomes targeted to pRBCs has not progressed towards clinical applications, whereas in vitro assays rarely reach drug efficacy improvements above 10-fold. Here we show that encapsulation efficiencies reaching N96% are achieved for the weak basic drugs chloroquine (CQ) and primaquine using the pH gradient loading method in liposomes containing neutral saturated phospholipids. Targeting antibodies are best conjugated through their primary amino groups, adjusting chemical crosslinker concentration to retain significant antigen recognition. Antigens from non-parasitized RBCs have also been considered as targets for the delivery to the cell of drugs not affecting the erythrocytic metabolism. Using this strategy, we have achieved unprecedented complete nanocarrier targeting to early intraerythrocytic stages of the malaria parasite for which there is a lack of specific extracellular molecular tags. Immunoliposomes studded with monoclonal antibodies raised against the erythrocyte surface protein glycophorin A were capable of targeting 100% RBCs and pRBCs at the low concentration of 0.5 μM total lipid in the culture, with N95% of added liposomes retained on cell surfaces. When exposed for only 15 min to Plasmodium falciparum in vitro cultures of early stages, free CQ had no significant effect on the viability of the parasite up to 200 nM, whereas immunoliposomal 50 nM CQ completely arrested its growth. In vivo assays in mice showed that immunoliposomes cleared the pathogen below detectable levels at a CQ dose of 0.5 mg/kg, whereas free CQ administered at 1.75 mg/kgwas, atmost, 40-fold less efficient. Our data suggest that this significant improvement is in part due to a prophylactic effect of CQ found by the pathogen in its host cell right at the very moment of invasion

Hipertrofia lipomatosa epicárdica: la entidad desconocida. Diagnóstico y tratamiento

Cardiac lipomatous hypertrophy (CLH) or lipomatous cordis is a not well known cardiac pathology which diagnosis and treatment remain difficult. It is caused by adipocyte hypertrophy and its main feature is non capsulated fatty tissue accumulation. It ́s normally located at the interatrial septum and less frequently at an epicardic location. Having an initial wrong diagnosis of pericardial effusion by transthoracic ecocardiography in most of the symptomatic cases described, epicardial CLH can be studied now by new cardiac imaging techniques such as cardiac computed tomography and cardiac magnetic resonance with high sensitivity and specificityLa hipertrofia lipomatosa cardíaca (HLC) o lipomatosis cordis es una patología cardíaca no bien conocida en la que persisten dificultades en su diagnóstico y manejo terapéutico.

Finding cytotoxic drugs with a high selectivity towards cancer cells is crucial to improve the low survival rates of patients diagnosed with metastatic cancers. Since plants are an important source of anticancer drugs, we have screened 65 extracts from 45 plants collected in several areas of Western Andalusia (Spain) for cytotoxic activity on lung cancer cells versus lung normal cells. An extract from the leaves of Tetraclinis articulata (Vahl) Mast. (Cupressaceae) showed a marked cytotoxicity (IC50 = 0.37 ± 0.03 µg/mL) and selectivity (selectivity index = 378.3) against the lung cancer cells; cisplatin, 5-fluorouracil, and an extract from the leaves of Taxus baccata L. (Taxaceae) were less cytotoxic and selective. Extracts from Cascabela thevetia (L.) Lippold (Apocynaceae), Frangula alnus Mill. (Rhamnaceae), Iberis ciliata subsp. contracta (Pers.) Moreno (Brassicaceae), Juniperus macrocarpa Sm (Cupressaceae), and Pancratium maritimum L. (Amaryllidaceae) also showed selective cytotoxicity (selectivity index > 10). Active extracts were also tested against a panel of cancer cell lines from a variety tissues. The plants identified in this work are potential sources of natural compounds with selective toxicity towards cancer cells.Universidad de Sevilla VPPI-I.
