Role of length polydispersity in the phase behavior of freely rotating hard-rectangle fluids

    Get PDF
We use the density-functional formalism, in particular the scaled-particle theory, applied to a length-polydisperse hard-rectangle fluid to study its phase behavior as a function of the mean particle aspect ratio kappa(0) and polydispersity Delta(0). The numerical solutions of the coexistence equations are calculated by transforming the original problem with infinite degrees of freedoms to a finite set of equations for the amplitudes of the Fourier expansion of the moments of the density profiles. We divide the study into two parts. The first one is devoted to the calculation of the phase diagrams in the packing fraction eta(0)-kappa(0) plane for a fixed Delta(0) and selecting parent distribution functions with exponential (the Schulz distribution) or Gaussian decays. In the second part we study the phase behavior in the eta(0)-Delta(0) plane for fixed kappa(0) while Delta(0) is changed. We characterize in detail the orientational ordering of particles and the fractionation of different species between the coexisting phases. Also we study the character (second vs first order) of the isotropic-nematic phase transition as a function of polydispersity. We particularly focus on the stability of the tetratic phase as a function of kappa(0) and Delta(0). The isotropic-nematic transition becomes strongly of first order when polydispersity is increased: The coexistence gap widens and the location of the tricritical point moves to higher values of kappa(0) while the tetratic phase is slightly destabilized with respect to the nematic one. The results obtained here can be tested in experiments on shaken monolayers of granular rods.Financial support from MINECO (Spain) under Grant No. FIS2015-66523-P is acknowledged

¡Saber retro-ceder hacia si mismo, he ahí la Filosofia'.  SUMMARYThis essay attempts to analyse Socrate’s attitude towards death as a prototype of the most desirable philosophical attitude. The invitation to Philosophy as an invitation to the most profund human sense: reasoning. The reason to be of the universe goes beyond the human phenomenum; to think philosophically. The understanding of limits is the critical attitude of radically questioning without pretending the rigidness and security of an only answer. !Knowing when to go back-in-self, there lies Philosophy!.

Records of the Crowned Eagle (Urubitinga coronata) in Moxos plains of Bolivia and observations about breeding behavior

    Get PDF
The Crowned Eagle (Urubitinga coronata, Accipitridae) is a globally endangered raptor, endemic to central and southern South America. Little is known about this species in Bolivia and no nesting or prey data have been reported for the country until now. Between 2007 and 2011, we detected Crowned Eagles in four different locations in Moxos Savannahs of Beni Department, Bolivia. We observed an active nest of Crowned Eagle on 23 November 2007. The nest contained a nestling and it was placed on a living tree approximately 13 m in height and approximately 8 m above the ground. This nest was empty during September and October 2008, but contained another nestling on 15 November 2009. These represent the first breeding records for the Crowned Eagle in Bolivia. Prey remains at the nest observed included two nine-banded armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus) and two six-banded armadillos (Euphractus sexcinctus). The minimum number of individual Crowned Eagles in the surveyed area was seven. Our observations of family groups, juveniles and two nestlings confirm the breeding of Crowned Eagles in the Moxos plains. Ectoparasites and uncontrolled burns may threaten the northwestern Bolivian population of the endangered Crowned Eagle.Fil: Berkunsky, Igor. Improving Hickson-like compact group finders in redshift surveys: An implementation in the SDSS

    Get PDF
In this work we present an algorithm to identify compact groups (CGs) that closely follows Hickson's original aim and that improves the completeness of the samples of compact groups obtained from redshift surveys. Methods. Instead of identifying CGs in projection first and then checking a velocity concordance criterion, we identify them directly in redshift space using Hickson-like criteria. The methodology was tested on a mock lightcone of galaxies built from the outputs of a recent semi-analytic model of galaxy formation run on top of the Millennium Simulation I after scaling to represent the first-year Planck cosmology. Results. The new algorithm identifies nearly twice as many CGs, no longer missing CGs that failed the isolation criterion because of velocity outliers lying in the isolation annulus. The new CG sample picks up lower surface brightness groups, which are both looser and with fainter brightest galaxies, missed by the classic method. A new catalogue of compact groups from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey is the natural corollary of this study. The publicly available sample comprises 462 observational groups with four or more galaxy members, of which 406 clearly fulfil all the compact group requirements: compactness, isolation, and velocity concordance of all of their members. The remaining 56 groups need further redshift information of potentially contaminating sources. This constitutes the largest sample of groups that strictly satisfy all the Hickson's criteria in a survey with available spectroscopic information.Fil: Díaz-Giménez, Eugenia. Uniform phases in fluids of hard isosceles triangles: one-component fluid and binary mixtures

    Get PDF
We formulate the scaled particle theory for a general mixture of hard isosceles triangles and calculate different phase diagrams for the one-component fluid and for certain binary mixtures. The fluid of hard triangles exhibits a complex phase behavior: (i) the presence of a triatic phase with sixfold symmetry, (ii) the isotropic-uniaxial nematic transition is of first order for certain ranges of aspect ratios, and (iii) the one-component system exhibits nematic-nematic transitions ending in critical points. We found the triatic phase to be stable not only for equilateral triangles but also for triangles of similar aspect ratios. We focus the study of binary mixtures on the case of symmetric mixtures: equal particle areas with aspect ratios (K-i) symmetric with respect to the equilateral one, K1K2 = 3. For these mixtures we found, aside from first-order isotropic-nematic and nematic-nematic transitions (the latter ending in a critical point): (i) a region of triatic phase stability even for mixtures made of particles that do not form this phase at the one-component limit, and (ii) the presence of a Landau point at which two triatic-nematic first-order transitions and a nematic-nematic demixing transition coalesce. This phase behavior is analogous to that of a symmetric three-dimensional mixture of rods and plates.Financial support under Grants No. FIS2015-66523- P and No. FIS2013-47350-C5-1-R from Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad (MINECO) of Spain is acknowledged
