Vitamin d fortification of consumption cow’s milk: Health, nutritional and technological aspects. a multidisciplinary lecture of the recent scientific evidence
Vitamin D is essential in assuring bone health at all stages of life, but its non-skeletal effects are also essential: This vitamin impacts the physiology of the immune system, skeletal muscles and adipose tissue, glucose metabolism, skin, cardiovascular and reproductive systems, neuro-cognitive functions and cell division. The incidence of vitamin D deficiency is widespread worldwide, at any age, in young and healthy subjects, as well as in pregnant women and the elderly population, due to several factors, including inadequate sunlight exposure, skin pigmentation and coverage, adiposity, lifestyle and low dietary intakes. To overcome this problem, the fortification of foods that are consumed on a daily basis, such as milk, is strongly advisable. This opinion paper aims to discuss, in a multidisciplinary way, the current evidence supporting the importance of vitamin D in health and disease and the role of milk as an optimal carrier of this vitamin, to promote adequate intakes, highlighting its unique physico-chemical characteristics linked to both fat globule membrane and casein micelle structure. Moreover, it addresses the impact of industrial processing and storage of consumption milk on the stability of these structures, thus in determining vitamin D bioavailability and the achievement of adequate intakes
The Extreme Energy Events HECR array: status and perspectives
The Extreme Energy Events Project is a synchronous sparse array of 52
tracking detectors for studying High Energy Cosmic Rays (HECR) and Cosmic
Rays-related phenomena. The observatory is also meant to address Long Distance
Correlation (LDC) phenomena: the network is deployed over a broad area covering
10 degrees in latitude and 11 in longitude. An overview of a set of preliminary
results is given, extending from the study of local muon flux dependance on
solar activity to the investigation of the upward-going component of muon flux
traversing the EEE stations; from the search for anisotropies at the sub-TeV

Results from the first use of low radioactivity argon in a dark matter search
Liquid argon is a bright scintillator with potent particle identification
properties, making it an attractive target for direct-detection dark matter
searches. The DarkSide-50 dark matter search here reports the first WIMP search
results obtained using a target of low-radioactivity argon. DarkSide-50 is a
dark matter detector, using two-phase liquid argon time projection chamber,
located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. The underground argon is
shown to contain Ar-39 at a level reduced by a factor (1.4 +- 0.2) x 10^3
relative to atmospheric argon. We report a background-free null result from
(2616 +- 43) kg d of data, accumulated over 70.9 live-days. When combined with
our previous search using an atmospheric argon, the 90 % C.L. upper limit on
the WIMP-nucleon spin-independent cross section based on zero events found in
the WIMP search regions, is 2.0 x 10^-44 cm^2 (8.6 x 10^-44 cm^2, 8.0 x 10^-43
cm^2) for a WIMP mass of 100 GeV/c^2 (1 TeV/c^2 , 10 TeV/c^2).Comment: Accepted by Phys. Rev.
Introducing the “analogs for Venus’ geologically recent surfaces” initiative: an opportunity for identifying and analyzing recently active volcano-tectonic areas of Venus trough a comparative study with terrestrial analogs
Several missions to Venus have been recently selected for launch [1–6], opening a new era for the exploration of the planet. One of the key questions that the future missions need to address is whether Venus is presently volcanically active [7–15]. Studying areas of active volcanism and tectonism on Venus is crucial to reveal clues about the geologic past of the planet, as well as provide information about the volatile content of its interior and the formation of its dense atmosphere. The “Analogsfor VENus’ GEologically Recent Surfaces” (AVENGERS) initiative aims to build a comprehensive database of terrestrial analog sites for the comparative study of recent and possibly on- going volcanic activity on Venus. Besides its scientific relevance, the AVENG- ERS initiative also acts as a bridge for international scientific collaboration, including the leadership and/or team members from the currently selected missions to Venus
Characterization of SABRE crystal NaI-33 with direct underground counting
Ultra-pure NaI(Tl) crystals are the key element for a model-independent
verification of the long standing DAMA result and a powerful means to search
for the annual modulation signature of dark matter interactions. The SABRE
collaboration has been developing cutting-edge techniques for the reduction of
intrinsic backgrounds over several years. In this paper we report the first
characterization of a 3.4 kg crystal, named NaI-33, performed in an underground
passive shielding setup at LNGS. NaI-33 has a record low K contamination
of 4.30.2 ppb as determined by mass spectrometry. We measured a light
yield of 11.10.2 photoelectrons/keV and an energy resolution of 13.2%
(FWHM/E) at 59.5 keV. We evaluated the activities of Ra and Th
inside the crystal to be Bq/kg and Bq/kg,
respectively, which would indicate a contamination from U and
Th at part-per-trillion level. We measured an activity of 0.510.02
mBq/kg due to Pb out of equilibrium and a quenching factor of
0.630.01 at 5304 keV. We illustrate the analyses techniques developed to
reject electronic noise in the lower part of the energy spectrum. A cut-based
strategy and a multivariate approach indicated a rate, attributed to the
intrinsic radioactivity of the crystal, of 1 count/day/kg/keV in the
[5-20] keV region
The economic impact of moderate stage Alzheimer's disease in Italy: Evidence from the UP-TECH randomized trial
Background: There is consensus that dementia is the most burdensome disease for modern societies. Few cost-of-illness studies examined the complexity of Alzheimer's disease (AD) burden, considering at the same time health and social care, cash allowances, informal care, and out-of-pocket expenditure by families. Methods: This is a comprehensive cost-of-illness study based on the baseline data from a randomized controlled trial (UP-TECH) enrolling 438 patients with moderate AD and their primary caregiver living in the community. Results: The societal burden of AD, composed of public, patient, and informal care costs, was about �20,000/yr. Out of this, the cost borne by the public sector was �4,534/yr. The main driver of public cost was the national cash-for-care allowance (�2,324/yr), followed by drug prescriptions (�1,402/yr). Out-of-pocket expenditure predominantly concerned the cost of private care workers. The value of informal care peaked at �13,590/yr. Socioeconomic factors do not influence AD public cost, but do affect the level of out-of-pocket expenditure. Conclusion: The burden of AD reflects the structure of Italian welfare. The families predominantly manage AD patients. The public expenditure is mostly for drugs and cash-for-care benefits. From a State perspective in the short term, the advantage of these care arrangements is clear, compared to the cost of residential care. However, if caregivers are not adequately supported, savings may be soon offset by higher risk of caregiver morbidity and mortality produced by high burden and stress. DarkSide status and prospects
Sem informaçãoDarkSide uses a dual-phase Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber to search for WIMP dark matter. The current detector, DarkSide-50, is running since mid 2015 with a target of 50 kg of Argon from an underground source. Here it is presented the latest results of searches of WIMP-nucleus interactions, with WIMP masses in the GeV-TeV range, and of WIMP-electron interactions, in the sub-GeV mass range. Search for dark matter annual modulation with DarkSide-50
Dark matter induced event rate in an Earth-based detector is predicted to
show an annual modulation as a result of the Earth's orbital motion around the
Sun. We searched for this modulation signature using the ionization signal of
the DarkSide-50 liquid argon time projection chamber. No significant signature
compatible with dark matter is observed in the electron recoil equivalent
energy range above , the lowest threshold ever achieved in

Constraints on sub-GeV dark-matter-electron scattering from the DarkSide-50 experiment
FAPESP - FUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULOWe present new constraints on sub-GeV dark-matter particles scattering off electrons based on 6780.0 kg d of data collected with the DarkSide-50 dual-phase argon time projection chamber. This analysis uses electroluminescence signals due to ionized electrons extracted from the liquid argon target. The detector has a very high trigger probability for these signals, allowing for an analysis threshold of three extracted electrons, or approximately 0.05 keVee.
