    Economics of Alternative Crop Production in Arid Regions

    As water resources in arid regions decline, agricultural producers are encouraged to adopt water conserving strategies. The implementation of alternative low-water use crops is one option, but is it economically feasible? Data on current and alternative crops for this study include enterprise budgets, producer interviews, and field trials in Northwestern Nevada, USA. We use WinEPIC, a Windows-based version of the EPIC model, which synthesizes both agronomics and economics, to model yields and returns of alternative crop production under differing irrigation levels. Risk analysis or the distribution of net returns to alternative crop production is also examined. This study determined that there are alternative crops that could be feasibly substituted for alfalfa and reduce water use by at least one-half while providing net returns that meet or exceed returns from alfalfa and keep producers profitable in agriculturealternative crops, arid regions, economic feasibility, irrigation, WinEPIC,

    The Relative Effectiveness of Audio, Video, and Static Visual Computer-Mediated Presentations

    Research on non-computerized media such as television, slides, animation, and film has developed an information-processing framework that can be adapted to research on com- puterized media. We examined the relative effectiveness of three different forms of computer presentation: digital video presentations with text, audio-only presentations with text, and static visual presentations with text. ANOVA results showed that although the achievement scores of participants in different treatment groups did not differ signifi- cantly, there was a significant difference in the time participants took to complete the presentations. From an information-processing perspective, these differences may be attributed to bisensory interference or bisensory facilitation. We concluded that when computer-mediated presentations are being designed, the comparative efficiency of the learning medium might often be more pertinent than the effectiveness of media imple- mentation. Les auteurs ont analysé l’efficacité relative de trois formes de présentation informatisée : la présentation vidéo numérique avec texte, la présentation exclusivement audio et la présentation visuelle statique avec texte. Les résultats de l’analyse de la variance révèlent une nette différence dans le temps pris par les participants pour effectuer les présentations. Du point de vue du traitement de l’information, ces différences peuvent s’expliquer par l’interférence bisensorielle ou la facilitation bisensorielle. Les auteurs concluent que, dans les présentations assistées par ordinateur, l’efficience relative du média d’apprentissage peut souvent être considérée plus importante que l’efficacité réelle de l’utilisation du média.

    Different Minds and Common Problems: Geert Hofstede\u27s Research on National Cultures

    This article discusses Geert Hofstede\u27s work on national cultural differences. It explains how Hofstede\u27s model of the dimensions of national culture might be of use to performance improvement professionals as they try to solve familiar, and perhaps not so familiar, problems in international settings. Hofstede\u27s work, first published in 1980, argues that many management theories, such as those of Herzberr, Mausner, and Snyderman (1959), Maslow (1970), and McGregor (1960), are not valid worldwide be cause the authors are subject to cultural bias that is manifested in their own cultural makeup. Hofstede\u27s research has shown that national cultures tend vary on four dimensions: uncertainty avoidance, masculinity, power distance, and individualism. Understanding national cultural differences is important to organizations to expand beyond their own national boundaries and to attempt to win the loyalty and business of customers around the globe

    Can Instagram be used to deliver an evidence-based exercise program for young women A process evaluation

    Background Instagram provides an opportunity to deliver low cost, accessible and appealing physical activity content. This study evaluated the feasibility of delivering an exercise program for young women using Instagram. Methods A single-group pre- and post-intervention trial examined the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a 12-week Instagram-delivered program with young inactive women (n = 16; M = 23 years), which prescribed running and body weight exercises to complete three times per week. Daily Instagram posts delivered the exercises, video demonstrations and motivational content. Feasibility was evaluated by examining exposure (Instagram posts viewed per week), engagement (likes, comments and tags on Instagram posts; number of exercise sessions completed per week; retention, defined as completion of the online survey at weeks 6 and 12), and acceptability [whether the program increased participants’ motivation to exercise (1 = strongly disagree-5 = strongly agree); satisfaction with the program (1 = not satisfied-5 = very satisfied)]. Preliminary efficacy was evaluated by comparing baseline and 12-week self-reported physical activity (IPAQ short-form) and fitness (cardiorespiratory and muscle strength; 1 = very poor-5 = very good, International Fitness Scale) using the Exact sign test. Results On average, participants reported seeing six posts in their Instagram feed per week. Posts received an average of five likes (IQR = 3–6). A total of four comments and one tag were observed across all posts. On average, participants reported completing two exercise sessions per week. Retention was 88% at 6 weeks but dropped to 56% at 12 weeks. Participants reported increased motivation to exercise (Mdn = 4, IQR = 3–4) and were satisfied with the program (Mdn = 4, IQR = 3–4). Only self-reported cardiorespiratory fitness showed a meaningful, though nonsignificant, improvement (MdnΔ = 1, IQR = 0–1, p = .06). Conclusions Although Instagram has the potential to deliver a low cost, convenient exercise program for young women, additional research is needed to identify methods of improving engagement (interaction with the Instagram content, exercise sessions completed, and retention in the program). Future research could examine the use of behaviour change theory and provide information that enables participants to tailor the exercises to their interests and needs. Additionally, the use of objective assessments of physical activity and fitness among a larger participants sample is needed

    Validity and bias on the online active Australia survey: Activity level and participant factors associated with self-report bias

    Background This study examined the criterion validity of the online Active Australia Survey, using accelerometry as the criterion, and whether self-report bias was related to level of activity, age, sex, education, body mass index and health-related quality of life. Methods The online Active Australia Survey was validated against the GENEActiv accelerometer as a direct measure of activity. Participants (n = 344) wore an accelerometer for 7 days, completed the Active Australia Survey, and reported their health and demographic characteristics. A Spearman’s rank coefficient examined the association between minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity recorded on the Active Australia Survey and GENEActiv accelerometer. A Bland-Altman plot illustrated self-report bias (the difference between methods). Linear mixed effects modelling was used to examine whether participant factors predicted self-report bias. Results The association between moderate-to-vigorous physical activity reported on the online Active Australia Survey and accelerometer was significant (rs = .27, p \u3c .001). Participants reported 4 fewer minutes per day on the Active Australia Survey than was recorded by accelerometry (95% limits of agreement −104 – 96 min) but the difference was not significant (t(343) = −1.40, p = .16). Self-report bias was negatively associated with minutes of accelerometer-recorded moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and positively associated with mental health-related quality of life. Conclusions The online Active Australia Survey showed limited criterion validity against accelerometry. Self-report bias was related to activity level and mental health-related quality of life. Caution is recommended when interpreting studies using the online Active Australia Survey

    Greenhouse and Field Evaluations of Entomopathogenic Nematodes (Nematode: Heterorhabditidae and Steinernematidae) for Control of Cabbage Maggot (Diopters: Anthomyiidae) on Cabbage

    Entomb pathogenic nematodes-Heterorhabditis bacteriophora Poinar (Oswego strain), Steinenema carpocapsae (Weiser) (NY001 strain), Steinemema carpocapsae (25 strain), Steinemema feltiae Filipjev (=Neoaplectana carpocapsae Weiser) (369 strain), Steinernema feltiae (27 strain), and Steinernema riobravus Cabanillas and Poinar (355 strain)-were examined for pathogenicity against cabbage maggot, Delia radicum (L.), larvae in the greenhouse and field. Applications (per plant) of 3,000 and 4,000 infective juveniles of S. feltiae (369 strain), 30,000 infective juveniles of H. bacteriophora (Oswego strain), and 300 and 30,000 infective juveniles of S. feltiae (27 strain) reduced the number of D. radicum that developed to pupae on potted cabbage plants. H. bacteriophora (Oswego) at applications of 3,000 and 30,000 infective juveniles per plant and S. feltiae (27 strain) at applications of 30,000 (but not 3,000) infective juveniles per plant significantly reduced root damage caused by larvae of D. radicum. Logarithmically increased dosages between 100 and 100,000 infective juveniles per plant of S. feltiae (27 strain) linearly reduced the number of D. radicum pupae that developed on potted cabbage plants and the damage caused to the roots by D. radicullarvae. Root and stem dry weights of cabbage plants infested with D. radicum were significantly greater for plants inoculated with 100,000 infective juveniles of S. feltiae (27 strain) than for plants not inoculated with nematodes. Nematode inoculation did not prevent significant losses in root or stem dry weights at dosages less than 100,000 infective juveniles per plant. Soil surface applications of 100,000 and 200,000 infective juveniles per plant of S. feltiae (27 strain) were more effective than subsurface applications in preventing damage by natural or augmented populations of D. radicum larvae on cabbage in the field. However, mortality rates of wax moth larvae exposed to soil samples treated with S. feltiae (27 strain) suggested that this nematode showed greater persistence when applied beneath rather than on the soil surfac

    Evolving paradigms in biological carbon cycling in the ocean

    Carbon is a keystone element in global biogeochemical cycles. It plays a fundamental role in biotic and abiotic processes in the ocean, which intertwine to mediate the chemistry and redox status of carbon in the ocean and the atmosphere. The interactions between abiotic and biogenic carbon (e.g., CO2, CaCO3, organic matter) in the ocean are complex, and there is a half-century-old enigma about the existence of a huge reservoir of recalcitrant dissolved organic carbon (RDOC) that equates to the magnitude of the pool of atmospheric CO2. The concepts of the biological carbon pump (BCP) and the microbial loop (ML) shaped our understanding of the marine carbon cycle. The more recent concept of the microbial carbon pump (MCP), which is closely connected to those of the BCP and the ML, explicitly considers the significance of the ocean's RDOC reservoir and provides a mechanistic framework for the exploration of its formation and persistence. Understanding of the MCP has benefited from advanced “omics”, and novel research in biological oceanography and microbial biogeochemistry. The need to predict the ocean’s response to climate change makes an integrative understanding of the MCP, BCP and ML a high priority. In this review, we summarize and discuss progress since the proposal of the MCP in 2010 and formulate research questions for the future
