Quantum lattice fluctuations in a frustrated Heisenberg spin-Peierls chain
As a simple model for spin-Peierls systems we study a frustrated Heisenberg
chain coupled to optical phonons. In view of the anorganic spin-Peierls
compound CuGeO3 we consider two different mechanisms of spin-phonon coupling.
Combining variational concepts in the adiabatic regime and perturbation theory
in the anti-adiabatic regime we derive effective spin Hamiltonians which cover
the dynamical effect of phonons in an approximate way. Ground-state phase
diagrams of these models are determined, and the effect of frustration is
discussed. Comparing the properties of the ground state and of low-lying
excitations with exact diagonalization data for the full quantum spin phonon
models, good agreement is found especially in the anti-adiabatic regime.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures included, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Spectral properties of the dimerized and frustrated chain
Spectral densities are calculated for the dimerized and frustrated S=1/2
chain using the method of continuous unitary transformations (CUTs). The
transformation to an effective triplon model is realized in a perturbative
fashion up to high orders about the limit of isolated dimers. An efficient
description in terms of triplons (elementary triplets) is possible: a detailed
analysis of the spectral densities is provided for strong and intermediate
dimerization including the influence of frustration. Precise predictions are
made for inelastic neutron scattering experiments probing the S=1 sector and
for optical experiments (Raman scattering, infrared absorption) probing the S=0
sector. Bound states and resonances influence the important continua strongly.
The comparison with the field theoretic results reveals that the sine-Gordon
model describes the low-energy features for strong to intermediate dimerization
only at critical frustration.Comment: 21 page
Ordering of the lamellar phase under a shear flow
The dynamics of a system quenched into a state with lamellar order and
subject to an uniform shear flow is solved in the large-N limit. The
description is based on the Brazovskii free-energy and the evolution follows a
convection-diffusion equation. Lamellae order preferentially with the normal
along the vorticity direction. Typical lengths grow as (with
logarithmic corrections) in the flow direction and logarithmically in the shear
direction. Dynamical scaling holds in the two-dimensional case while it is
violated in D=3
Revival of the spin-Peierls transition in Cu_xZn_(1-x)GeO_3 under pressure
Pressure and temperature dependent susceptibility and Raman scattering
experiments on single crystalline Cu_xZn_(1-x)GeO_3 have shown an unusually
strong increase of the spin-Peierls phase transition temperature upon applying
hydrostatic pressure. The large positive pressure coefficient (7.5 K/GPa) -
almost twice as large as for the pure compound (4.5 K/GPa) - is interpreted as
arising due to an increasing magnetic frustration which decreases the spin-spin
correlation length, and thereby weakens the influence of the non-magnetic

Elementary Excitations in Dimerized and Frustrated Heisenberg Chains
We present a detailed numerical analysis of the low energy excitation
spectrum of a frustrated and dimerized spin Heisenberg chain. In
particular, we show that in the commensurate spin--Peierls phase the ratio of
the singlet and triplet excitation gap is a universal function which depends on
the frustration parameter only. We identify the conditions for which a second
elementary triplet branch in the excitation spectrum splits from the continuum.
We compare our results with predictions from the continuum limit field theory .

Spinor condensates and light scattering from Bose-Einstein condensates
These notes discuss two aspects of the physics of atomic Bose-Einstein
condensates: optical properties and spinor condensates. The first topic
includes light scattering experiments which probe the excitations of a
condensate in both the free-particle and phonon regime. At higher light
intensity, a new form of superradiance and phase-coherent matter wave
amplification were observed. We also discuss properties of spinor condensates
and describe studies of ground--state spin domain structures and dynamical

Regulation of 5-HT Receptors and the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis
Disturbances in the serotonin (5-HT) system is the neurobiological abnormality most consistently associated with suicide. Hyperactivity of the hypothalmic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is also described in suicide victims. The HPA axis is the classical neuroendocrine system that responds to stress and whose final product, corticosteroids, targets components of the limbic system, particularly the hippocampus. We will review resulsts from animal studies that point to the possibility that many of the 5-HT receptor changes observed in suicide brains may be a result of, or may be worsened by, the HPA overactivity that may be present in some suicide victims. The results of these studies can be summarized as follows: (1) chronic unpredictable stress produces high corticosteroid levels in rats; (2) chronic stress also results in changes in specific 5-HT receptors (increases in cortical 5-HT2A and decreases in hipocampal 5-HT1A and 5-HT1B); (3) chronic antidepressant administration prevents many of the 5-HT receptor changes observed after stress; and (4) chronic antidepressant administration reverses the overactivity of the HPA axis. If indeed 5-HT receptors have a partial role in controlling affective states, then their modulation by corticosteroids provides a potential mechanism by which these hormones may regulate mood. These data may also provide a biological understanding of how stressful events may increase the risk for suicide in vulnerable individuals and may help us elucidate the neurobiological underpinnings of treatment resistance.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/73437/1/j.1749-6632.1997.tb52357.x.pd
Functional mechanisms underlying pleiotropic risk alleles at the 19p13.1 breast-ovarian cancer susceptibility locus
A locus at 19p13 is associated with breast cancer (BC) and ovarian cancer (OC) risk. Here we analyse 438 SNPs in this region in 46,451 BC and 15,438 OC cases, 15,252 BRCA1 mutation carriers and 73,444 controls and identify 13 candidate causal SNPs associated with serous OC (P=9.2 × 10-20), ER-negative BC (P=1.1 × 10-13), BRCA1-associated BC (P=7.7 × 10-16) and triple negative BC (P-diff=2 × 10-5). Genotype-gene expression associations are identified for candidate target genes ANKLE1 (P=2 × 10-3) and ABHD8 (P<2 × 10-3). Chromosome conformation capture identifies interactions between four candidate SNPs and ABHD8, and luciferase assays indicate six risk alleles increased transactivation of the ADHD8 promoter. Targeted deletion of a region containing risk SNP rs56069439 in a putative enhancer induces ANKLE1 downregulation; and mRNA stability assays indicate functional effects for an ANKLE1 3′-UTR SNP. Altogether, these data suggest that multiple SNPs at 19p13 regulate ABHD8 and perhaps ANKLE1 expression, and indicate common mechanisms underlying breast and ovarian cancer risk
Escherichia coli as a model active colloid:A practical introduction
The flagellated bacterium Escherichia coli is increasingly used
experimentally as a self-propelled swimmer. To obtain meaningful, quantitative
results that are comparable between different laboratories, reproducible
protocols are needed to control, `tune' and monitor the swimming behaviour of
these motile cells. We critically review the knowledge needed to do so, explain
methods for characterising the colloidal and motile properties of E.coli,
cells, and propose a protocol for keeping them swimming at constant speed at
finite bulk concentrations. In the process of establishing this protocol, we
use motility as a high-throughput probe of aspects of cellular physiology via
the coupling between swimming speed and the proton motive force.Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures, 4 table
The Cholecystectomy As A Day Case (CAAD) Score: A Validated Score of Preoperative Predictors of Successful Day-Case Cholecystectomy Using the CholeS Data Set
Background
Day-case surgery is associated with significant patient and cost benefits. However, only 43% of cholecystectomy patients are discharged home the same day. One hypothesis is day-case cholecystectomy rates, defined as patients discharged the same day as their operation, may be improved by better assessment of patients using standard preoperative variables.
Methods
Data were extracted from a prospectively collected data set of cholecystectomy patients from 166 UK and Irish hospitals (CholeS). Cholecystectomies performed as elective procedures were divided into main (75%) and validation (25%) data sets. Preoperative predictors were identified, and a risk score of failed day case was devised using multivariate logistic regression. Receiver operating curve analysis was used to validate the score in the validation data set.
Results
Of the 7426 elective cholecystectomies performed, 49% of these were discharged home the same day. Same-day discharge following cholecystectomy was less likely with older patients (OR 0.18, 95% CI 0.15–0.23), higher ASA scores (OR 0.19, 95% CI 0.15–0.23), complicated cholelithiasis (OR 0.38, 95% CI 0.31 to 0.48), male gender (OR 0.66, 95% CI 0.58–0.74), previous acute gallstone-related admissions (OR 0.54, 95% CI 0.48–0.60) and preoperative endoscopic intervention (OR 0.40, 95% CI 0.34–0.47). The CAAD score was developed using these variables. When applied to the validation subgroup, a CAAD score of ≤5 was associated with 80.8% successful day-case cholecystectomy compared with 19.2% associated with a CAAD score >5 (p < 0.001).
Conclusions
The CAAD score which utilises data readily available from clinic letters and electronic sources can predict same-day discharges following cholecystectomy
