    FĂ©rriz y Cabrero: lecciones de una desconocida y paradigmĂĄtica colaboraciĂłn entre fotĂłgrafo y arquitecto

    El creciente interĂ©s por investigar y analizar las relaciones entre arquitectura y fotografĂ­a puede abordarse desde enfoques generales o dimensiones mĂĄs especulativas pero tambiĂ©n desde casos de estudio especĂ­ficos. La posibilidad de tener acceso directo tanto a las fotografĂ­as en papel del archivo del arquitecto AsĂ­s Cabrero como a los negativos del fotĂłgrafo FĂ©rriz nos permite analizar en profundidad un material inĂ©dito de una colaboraciĂłn paradigmĂĄtica entre un arquitecto y un fotĂłgrafo prĂĄcticamente desconocido hasta la fecha. La condiciĂłn exclusiva de esta relaciĂłn, la calidad de las imĂĄgenes y la sinergia entre ambos profesionales apuntan claves, lecciones en suma, para seguir profundizando en el papel y los usos de la imagen construida y en sus implicaciones en el devenir arquitectĂłnico.With few exceptions, it is not possible to date collaborations between AsĂ­s Cabrero ( 1912-2005) and a photographer other than JesĂșs GarcĂ­a FĂ©rriz ( 1900-1988). Similarly, there are only few and isolated works proving that FĂ©rriz made photo reports of other architects’ work. This dual situation points out a unique case study, barely known and unexplored up to date, and of a great theoretical relevance to delve into the intricacies of the marriage architecture & photography. This situation becomes even more exceptional due to the existence of paper prints form the architect’s own archive —kept at the General Archive of the University of Navarra— as well as the availability of the photographer’s original negatives. The close and loyal working relationship between Cabrero and FĂ©rriz represent, in the context of modern Spanish architecture, a unique case of complete trust and complicity between an architect and his photographer. Although there are other relevant examples —such as Coderch and CatalĂ -Roca or FernĂĄndez del Amo and Kindel— none of them proved to have such an exclusive relationship. This fact can be proved not only by the available data and the different hypothesis that might be formulated, but also by the case study described in this text, which provides a rigorous and critic analysis of the unpublished material showing how the architect’s project and idea is described and graphically documented through Ferry’s photography. We therefore address, under a new reciprocal practice among the actors in the process, the synergies between architecture and photography that endorse and support a particular status coherent with the role played by the image of architecture in its growth and media, historiographical and disciplinary transmission. As opposed to AsĂ­s Cabrero, who has already been recognized as a leading figure of modern Spanish architecture, the photographic work made by the FĂ©rriz family has scarcely up to date been revealed in the field of Spanish photographic community of the 20th Century and has never been recognized as example of professionalism and technical expertise in the course of their long term career. In this text the outcomes of this relationship will be explored not only based on technical and aesthetic qualities, but also on the analysis of the rigor and coherence of their respective attitudes and their professional skills

    Relationship between PASE score with anthropometrics and cardiovascular variables associated to obesity in an older Mexican population

    INTRODUCTION: Obesity in Older Adults (OA) increases the risk to acquire non-communicable diseases such as metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. Some reports indicate that sedentary habits or low physical activity is one of the main factor that induce obesity in elderly state. PURPOSE: Determine the relationship between the level of physical activity via Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE) test, anthropometric and cardiovascular variables associated to obesity in an older Mexican population. METHODS: Fourteen OA (63.4 ± 1.78 years) from Ensenada city, Baja California were recruited. The PASE was applied individually, in each participants was determined the waist circumference (WC) and body mass index (BMI). In the same sense, the Systolic Blood Pressure (SBP) and resting Heart Rate (HR) were evaluated. Spearman correlation test was employed to determine the relationship between variables. RESULTS: The PASE score was 10.58 ± 1.52. The WC was 87.72 ± 2.15 cm. The BMI showed by the participants was 27.3 ± 0.84 kg/m2. On the other hand, the SBP was 131.07 ± 4.38 mmHg. The HR was 72.07 ± 2.50 ppm. The PASE score does not showed statistical correlation with the BMI (r=0.34; p=0.22). In the same sense, there was not significate association between PASE and WC (r=-0.06; p=0.8). The HR showed negative correlation with the PASE (r=-0.45) however, this association was not significant (p=0.1). Finally, the PASE does not correlation with the SBP (r=0.13; p=0.65). CONCLUSION: The preliminary data showed that the PASE questionnaire cannot be used to predict the variables associated to obesity in older Mexican population

    Coronavirus pandemic: an opportunity to study the anthropogenic impact on micro-climate conditions and CaCO3 crystal morphology in the Nerja Cave (SE Spain)

    Following the declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Spanish Government restricted non-essential movements of all citizens and closed all public spaces, such as the Nerja Cave, until May 31, 2020. This particular condition of the closure of the cave provided a unique opportunity to study the micro-climate conditions and carbonate precipitation in this tourist cave without the presence of visitors. Our results show the significant effect of visitors on the air isotopic signature of the cave and on the genesis of the extensive dissolution features affecting the carbonate crystals formed in the tourist sector of the cave, alerting us to the possible corrosion of the speleothems located there. The movement of visitors within the cave also favours the mobilisation of aerial fungi and bacterial spores and their subsequent sedimentation simultaneously with the abiotic precipitation of carbonates from the drip water. The traces of these biotic elements could be the origin of the micro-perforations previously described in the carbonate crystals formed in the tourist galleries of the cave, but they are subsequently enlarged due to abiotic dissolution of the carbonates through these weaker zones.It is financed by the Nerja Cave Foundation, co-ordinated by its Research Institute and authorized by the ConsejerĂ­a de Cultura (Junta de AndalucĂ­a).     Aldehyde Dehydrogenase 3 Is an Expanded Gene Family with Potential Adaptive Roles in Chickpea

    Legumes play an important role in ensuring food security, improving nutrition and enhancing ecosystem resilience. Chickpea is a globally important grain legume adapted to semi-arid regions under rain-fed conditions. A growing body of research shows that aldehyde dehydrogenases (ALDHs) represent a gene class with promising potential for plant adaptation improvement. Aldehyde dehydrogenases constitute a superfamily of proteins with important functions as ‘aldehyde scavengers’ by detoxifying aldehydes molecules, and thus play important roles in stress responses. We performed a comprehensive study of the ALDH superfamily in the chickpea genome and identified 27 unique ALDH loci. Most chickpea ALDHs originated from duplication events and the ALDH3 gene family was noticeably expanded. Based on the physical locations of genes and sequence similarities, our results suggest that segmental duplication is a major driving force in the expansion of the ALDH family. Supported by expression data, the findings of this study offer new potential target genes for improving stress tolerance in chickpea that will be useful for breeding programs

    Biological control of soil-borne phytopathogenic fungi through onion waste composting: implications for circular economy perspective

    The production of onion waste derived mainly from bulbs affected by fungal diseases, during onion classification and storage presents an important agro-environmental issue in onion production regions. Composting is an environmentally friendly strategy to recycle agricultural waste and produce organic fertilizers. Modifications of the microbial community in soil can affect the ability of pathogen propagules to survive, germinate and infect plant roots. Hence, the main objective of this work was to exploring the mechanisms involved on the presence of three soil-borne phytopathogenic fungi during the composting process of onion waste under the hypothesis if that the resulting compost effectively prevents or minimizes the dispersion of phytopathogenic fungi. To this end, three composting piles of 60 tonnes each were built by layering onion waste affected by phytopathogenic fungi and cow dung at 1:1 ratio. Temperature, moisture, pH, electrical conductivity (EC) and Aspergillus niger, Penicillium sp. and Fusarium sp. growth were monitored for 100 days. During the first 28 days of composting, the presence of phytopathogenic fungi increased significantly showing thereafter a downward trend. Final estimations of fungal populations densities indicated a predominance of A. niger and an effective reduction in the abundance of Fusarium sp. This pilot-scale work demonstrates the feasibility of composting onion waste contaminated with phytopathogenic fungi and highlights the positive environmental impact associated with this practice. Therefore, the composting of onion waste and cow dung is a feasible and sustainable procedure to recycle onion waste and to promote circular economy in onion production regions.Fil: Chorolque, A..     Stability of a cyanidin-3-O-glucoside extract obtained from Arbutus unedo L. and incorporation into wafers for colouring purposes

    An extract from Arbutus unedo fruits, rich in anthocyanins, was studied as a natural colorant with bioactive properties (antioxidant, antimicrobial and cytotoxic). The aqueous stability of the extract was monitored using the anthocyanins’ content as response (determined by HPLC-DAD) in function of time, temperature and pH. Aided by mechanistic/phenomenological models, the conditions that favours the stabilization of the extract were provided, highlighting the suitability of the colorant for pastry/bakery products. As a case study, the extract was incorporated into wafers and the changes on the nutritional profile, free sugars, fatty acids and antioxidant properties were monitored during 6 days of storage. The results provide information for: i) potential application of the rich extract in anthocyanins for producing a natural colorant with bioactive properties; and ii) shelf-life predictions.     This paper aims at presenting the Project of Corpus Linguistics in Spanish developed by the research group TesUN of the Universidad de Navarra, which also is a part of the Red CHARTA. The corpus consists of personal ancient documents which date back to 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. These texts were preserved in private archives at private homes in Navarra (Spain). The established corpus is characterized by the heterogeneity of its textual typology, which ranges from notarial documents -copies, testaments, marriage contractsto private writing -letters, receipts, bills or obituaries-, or, in the case of the former parsonages, sermons and biblical exegesis, as well as letters. Therefore, this corpus opens a wide range of study to paleographers, historians -in particular to those interested in the history of private life and the history of mentalities-, linguists or ethnographers and ethnologists

    Saliva secretory IgA kinetics in obese subjects submitted to a graded exercise test

    INTRODUCTION: Secretory IgA (sIgA) is predominant immunoglobulin in secretions of the mucosal immune system. It inhibit attachment and replication of pathogenic microorganism, preventing colonization by these pathogens. Therefore, sIgA is consider the first line of defense against pathogens. Previous studies have indicated a direct link between low salivary sIgA levels with of upper respiratory tract infections (UTRI) episodes in endurance sports and elite athletes. PURPOSE: Determine the effect of a maximal graded exercise test on the saliva sIgA levels in obese adult subjects. METHODS: Eleven obese male subjects (Age 31± 1.53 years) were recruited. The Body Mass Index (BMI) and, Waist Circumference (WC) were measured. Graded exercise test was performed on an electrically-braked cycle ergometer (Lode). The Heart rate (HR) was registered using a digital pulse meter (Polar FT1 model) before, immediately finished the exercise and after 30 min post- exercise test. The saliva samples were collected alongside with HR during the test. RESULTS: The WC (110.37 ± 3.89 cm) and BMI (34.73 ± 1.62 kg/m2) values confirmed the obesity state in the participants. The HR at basal was 77.09 ± 3.10 bpm, at post exercise, the HR mean was 175.45 ± 4.94 bpm (p \u3c0.0001 vs basal). Finally, at 30 post exe, the HR was 91.81 ± 3.01 bpm (P \u3c0.0001 vs post-exe). In basal state, the sIgA concentration was 94.21 ± 13.57 ”m/mL. At post exe, the sIgA mean was 175.9 ± 22.45 ”m/mL (p\u3c0.05 vs basal). Finally, 30’ post-exercise the sIgA level was 91.39 ± 10.40 ”m/mL. However, the sIgA was not modified by the exercise. CONCLUSION: The present work demonstrates that the salivary sIgA increases temporally as a response to the graded exercise test in obese adults. Although, the changes in the sIgA concentration was not accompanied with a major sIgA secretion in the saliva

    Oncological safety of transanal total mesorectal excision (TaTME) for rectal cancer: mid-term results of a prospective multicentre study

    Background There is no consensus regarding the gold standard technique for rectal cancer as Total Mesorectal Excision (TME) may be safely performed either by open or minimally invasive surgery. The laparoscopic approach, however, may carry technical difficulties. For this reason, a novel technique has emerged in the last decade combining a dual laparoscopic dissection (abdominal and transanal) to perform the TME technique (TaTME). When focusing on oncological outcomes, there is a lack of literature regarding mid-long term results. The aim of this study is to evaluate the mid-term oncological impact of TaTME for treating rectal cancer. Methods A prospective multicentre study was performed in four tertiary centres including consecutive patients who underwent TaTME for mid-low rectal cancer by the same group of experienced surgeons. The analysed data included pathological results on the quality of TME and mid-term oncological outcomes. Results In total, 173 patients were included throughout a study period of 6 years. Our series included 70% males and 68% of patients with neoadjuvant treatments. The median follow-up was 23 [15–37.5] months. Regarding pathological results, a complete TME was achieved in 72.8%, while circumferential and distal margins were affected in 1.4 and 1.1%, respectively. Five patients developed local recurrences (3%) and 8.1% presented distant disease during the follow-up. The 2-year disease-free survival and the overall survival rates were 88% and 95%, respectively. Conclusions There is currently a lack of evidence in the literature regarding TaTME and oncological outcomes with no data available from randomized clinical trials. In the meantime, the reported results from different multicentre series are controversial. This study showed positive mid-term outcomes at 2 years of follow-up and supported notable oncological outcomes with TaTME. However, it must be emphasized that previous experience in minimally invasive and transanal surgeries is essential for surgeons before intending to perform TaTME
