    Get PDF

SummaryCommercial heritage management at Gram Slot A/SIn recent decades, a substantial number of Danish country houses [da: “herregårde”] have explored business opportunities within the so-called “experience economy”. Privately owned country houses comprise a unique field of investigation, because these estates constitute both a shared cultural heritage and modern business ventures. In their efforts to generate income to uphold the country house and estate, owners and managers welcome visitors onto the estate and into the country house. Paying visitors are invited to “experience the country house” as venues for, among other things, weddings, parties, conferences, concerts, Christmas fairs, historical festivals, team-building, golf and tourism. This article comprises an analysis of commercial offerings and visitor practices at Gram Slot A/S, a Danish country house in southern Jutland operating as a private limited company since 2007. Gram Slot A/S produces organic food such as milk, oatmeal and potatoes as well as tourist services like fairs, dinner parties and holiday visits. Guided tours in the country house are provided to visitors with interpretations of Grams’ history as well as the present business operations. An analysis of six markedly different guided tours at Gram showed how different guides and different audiences could result in surprising shifts of perspective. Gram was variously presented as a historical country house, an innovative family business, an organic farm, a regional centre and a place of unique aesthetic qualities. The guided tours created a strong narrative that presented Gram as a place of past, present and future – a reminder that new activities may also create new history and new meaning(s) to country houses and other heritage sites. Through a presentation of various understandings of “cultural heritage” the article discusses commercial offerings and “experiences” in heritage management. The analysis shows that commercial heritage management may help bring revenue for conservation and provide historical “feeling” and a sense of place to visitors and to local and national communities. However, by academic standards historical representations are often flawed and rarely adds to historical understanding. In the final analysis, the article advocates a pragmatic view on cultural heritage management, in which country houses by adapting to new challenges – as cultural heritage as well as contemporary business – may create new meaning to historical buildings and thereby offer a different and rewarding view on how we relate to our past

ATLANTIC EPIPHYTES: a data set of vascular and non-vascular epiphyte plants and lichens from the Atlantic Forest

    Get PDF
Epiphytes are hyper-diverse and one of the frequently undervalued life forms in plant surveys and biodiversity inventories. Epiphytes of the Atlantic Forest, one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world, have high endemism and radiated recently in the Pliocene. We aimed to (1) compile an extensive Atlantic Forest data set on vascular, non-vascular plants (including hemiepiphytes), and lichen epiphyte species occurrence and abundance; (2) describe the epiphyte distribution in the Atlantic Forest, in order to indicate future sampling efforts. Our work presents the first epiphyte data set with information on abundance and occurrence of epiphyte phorophyte species. All data compiled here come from three main sources provided by the authors: published sources (comprising peer-reviewed articles, books, and theses), unpublished data, and herbarium data. We compiled a data set composed of 2,095 species, from 89,270 holo/hemiepiphyte records, in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, recorded from 1824 to early 2018. Most of the records were from qualitative data (occurrence only, 88%), well distributed throughout the Atlantic Forest. For quantitative records, the most common sampling method was individual trees (71%), followed by plot sampling (19%), and transect sampling (10%). Angiosperms (81%) were the most frequently registered group, and Bromeliaceae and Orchidaceae were the families with the greatest number of records (27,272 and 21,945, respectively). Ferns and Lycophytes presented fewer records than Angiosperms, and Polypodiaceae were the most recorded family, and more concentrated in the Southern and Southeastern regions. Data on non-vascular plants and lichens were scarce, with a few disjunct records concentrated in the Northeastern region of the Atlantic Forest. For all non-vascular plant records, Lejeuneaceae, a family of liverworts, was the most recorded family. We hope that our effort to organize scattered epiphyte data help advance the knowledge of epiphyte ecology, as well as our understanding of macroecological and biogeographical patterns in the Atlantic Forest. No copyright restrictions are associated with the data set. Please cite this Ecology Data Paper if the data are used in publication and teaching events. © 2019 The Authors. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report in the literature concerning the bioactive properties of faveleira products. This work focuses on the physicochemical evaluation of faveleira oil, as well as it investigates the bioactive properties of faveleira seeds, faveleira oil and the press cake obtained during the oilseed processing. The seeds were cold pressed and the following tests were performed: physicochemical characteristics (acidity, peroxide values, moisture and volatile matter, density and viscosity) and fatty acid profile of faveleira oil; total phenolic and flavonoid content of faveleira seed and press cake; antibacterial activity of seed, oil and press cake; and antioxidant activity (DPPH radical scavenging activity, reducing power assay, total antioxidant capacity, superoxide radical scavenging assay and oxygen radical absorbance capacity) of seed, oil and press cake. Our work demonstrated that the faveleira seed oil has low acidity (0.78 ± 0.03% oleic acid) and peroxide value (1.13 ± 0.12 mEq/1000g), associated with the relevant concentration of linoleic acid (53.56%). It was observed that important phenolics (398.89 ± 6.34 mg EAG/100 g), especially flavonoids (29.81 ± 0.71 mg RE/g) remain in the press cake, which indicates that the by-product of the faveleira oilseed production constitutes a rich residual source of bioactive compounds. No bacterial growth inhibition was detected, but all samples including faveleira seeds, press cake, oil and its fractions have potent antioxidant activities, mainly the press cake, with oxygen radical absorbance capacity of 28.39 ± 4.36 μM TE/g. Our results also show that faveleira oil has potential to be used as edible oil and the press cake should be used to contain the most antioxidants from seed

Made available in DSpace on 2019-09-12T16:53:27Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2015The aim of this study was to analyze, through Vickers hardness test and photoelasticity analysis, pre-bent areas, manually bent areas, and areas without bends of 10-mmadvancement pre-bent titanium plates (Leibinger system). The work was divided into three groups: group I-region without bend, group II-region of 90 degrees manual bend, and group III-region of 90 degrees pre-fabricated bends. All the materials were evaluated through hardness analysis by the Vickers hardness test, stress analysis by residual images obtained in a polariscope, and photoelastic analysis by reflection during the manual bending. The data obtained from the hardness tests were statistically analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey's tests at a significance level of 5 %. The pre-bent plate (group III) showed hardness means statistically significantly higher (P<0.05) than those of the other groups (I-region without bends, II-90 degrees manually bent region). Through the study of photoelastic reflection, it was possible to identify that the stress gradually increased, reaching a pink color (1.81 delta lambda/), as the bending was performed. A general analysis of the results showed that the bent plate region of pre-bent titanium presented the best results.[Araujo, Marcelo Marotta] State Univ Sao Paulo UNESP, Sch Dent Sao Jose dos Campos, Dept Oral & Maxillofacial Surg, Sao Jose Dos Campos, SP, Brazil[Lauria, Andrezza; Meneses Mendes, Marcelo Breno] State Univ Campinas UNICAMP, Sch Dent Piracicaba, Dept Oral & Maxillofacial Surg, Av Limeira 901,POB 52, BR-13414903 Piracicaba, SP, Brazil[Rosifini Alves Claro, Ana Paula] State Univ Sao Paulo UNESP, Sch Engn Guaratingueta, Dept Mat, Guaratingueta, SP, Brazil[de Assis Claro, Cristiane Aparecida] Universidade de Taubaté (Unitau), Sch Dent, Dept Orthodont[Fernandes Moreira, Roger William] State Univ Campinas UNICAMP, Sch Dent Piracicaba, Dept Oral & Maxillofacial Surg, Piracicaba, SP, Brazi

    No full text
The purpose of the present study was to evaluate yellow mombin (Spondias mombin L.) juice as a vehicle for the Lactobacillus acidophilus NRRL B-4495 probiotic. The initial pH and fermentation temperature conditions were optimized by central composite rotational design. The beverage was evaluated for its chemical composition, bioactive properties, microbiological stability, survival in simulated gastrointestinal conditions and sensory analysis. The ideal conditions for probiotic juice production were an initial pH of 6.4 and 16 h of fermentation, with maximum viability of 12.9 ± 0.4 Log CFU/mL. The fermented juice showed a total phenolic concentration of 94.90 ± 7.12 GAE/mL and antioxidant activity, as measured by DPPH (0.31 ± 0.00 μmol TE/mL) and ABTS sequestration (2.59 ± 0.30 μmol TE/mL). Antibacterial activity could also be observed against S. aureus, E. coli and K. pneumoniae. The obtained formulation showed good microbiological stability when stored at 4ºC for 28 days. In addition, there was no significant change in viability after exposure to simulated gastrointestinal conditions. The sensory analysis showed that the probiotic beverage was not well accepted. However, the Just-About-Right (JAR) ideal scale test enabled identifying the specific attributes which need to be improved from the tasters' point of view so that it is possible to improve product acceptance
