Process maturity progress at Motorola Cellular Systems Division
We believe that the key success elements are related to our recognition that Software Process Improvement (SPI) can and should be organized, planned, managed, and measured as if it were a project to develop a new process, analogous to a software product. We believe that our process improvements have come as the result of these key elements: use of a rigorous, detailed requirements set (Capability Maturity Model, CMM); use of a robust, yet flexible architecture (IEEE 1074); use of a SPI project, resourced and managed like other work, to produce the specifications and implement them; and development of both internal and external goals, with metrics to support them
Gauging Residential Knowledge and Behavior to Inform Stormwater Outreach Efforts across South Carolina
Public outreach and education are important components of local stormwater management efforts aimed at protecting water quality and reducing pollutants of concern. Increasingly, educators recognize that creating effective outreach material depends on an understanding of the target audience, their current behavior, and their barriers and motivations to adopting pro-environmental behaviors. Clemson Extension’s Carolina Clear program partners with 39 communities across South Carolina to provide compliance-based stormwater education and outreach. On behalf of these community partners, Carolina Clear conducted the third iteration of a telephone survey to gauge local knowledge, perceptions, and behaviors of residents related to stormwater and watershed health. Results presented here will highlight key knowledge gaps (e.g., the misconception that stormwater runoff is treated) and behaviors (e.g., dumping down storm drains) that could potentially be targeted through education and removal of barriers (e.g., storm drain markings). Survey results showed ongoing misperceptions about the major sources of stormwater pollution, whether stormwater is treated, and what behaviors generate pollution. However, results also show a high level of concern about water quality, as well as a desire to practice pro-environmental behavior. Highlighting the connection between potential sources of pollution, such as pet waste and septic systems, and impacts, such as shellfish bed closures and swimming restrictions, could provide stronger awareness and motivation, particularly among the large number of residents who enjoy visiting beaches and who swim, fish, and boat in local waterways. Ultimately, the survey results can be used by a variety of educators and practitioners statewide to better understand and identify target audiences and to guide the development of stormwater programming that addresses these knowledge gaps. Conducting focus groups with subpopulations of residents is recommended as a next step to further identify specific motivations within subpopulations of residents. Combining the survey results with focus-group data can help educators remove barriers to taking action and further motivate behavior change
Long-proboscid brachyceran flies in Cretaceous amber (Diptera: Stratiomyomorpha: Zhangsolvidae)
The monophyletic family Zhangsolvidae comprises stout-bodied brachyceran flies with a long proboscis and occurring only in the Cretaceous, originally known in shale from the Early Cretaceous Laiyang Formation (Fm.) in China (Zhangsolva Nagatomi & Yang), subsequently from limestones of the Early Cretaceous Crato Fm. of Brazil. Cratomyoides Wilkommen is synonymized with Cratomyia Mazzarolo & Amorim, both from the Crato Fm.; Cratomyiidae is synonymized with Zhangsolvidae. Two genera and three species of Zhangsolvidae are described: Buccinatormyia magnifica Arillo, Peñalver & Pérez-de la Fuente, gen. et sp.n. and B. soplaensis Arillo, Peñalver & Pérez-de la Fuente, sp.n., in Albian amber from Las Peñosas Fm. in Spain; and Linguatormyia teletacta Grimaldi, gen. et sp.n., in Upper AlbianLower Cenomanian amber from Hukawng Valley inMyanmar. Buccinatormyia soplaensis and Linguatormyia teletacta are unique among all Brachycera, extant or extinct, by their remarkably long, flagellate antennae, about 1.6× the body length in the latter species. A phylogenetic analysis of 52 morphological characters for 35 taxa is presented, 11 taxa being Cretaceous species, which supports placement of the family within Stratiomyomorpha, although not to any particular family within the infraorder

Building a Profile of the Fire Safety Community in Australia
The Fire Protection Association of Australia seeks to ensure the highest level of fire safety for the Australian community. The goal of this project was to provide recommendations to broaden and strengthen the membership and networking of FPA Australia. To accomplish this, we created a visual web representing the fields of the fire protection community and the networks that exists between them. We then identified specific fields that are not adequately represented and provided strategies for increasing membership and networking in two of these fields

Characterizing the development of grain boundaries and microstructure features in IN-100 due to heat treatment from 1500 to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit
Modern air travel relies on the safe and efficient operation of gas turbine engines, which are made possible by advanced materials. Super alloys are needed in these applications because of their high strength and resistance to creep at high temperatures. One of these critical super alloys is the nickel based super alloy IN-100, created by the Special Metals Corporation. While the excellent properties of IN-100 at normal operating temperatures are well known, its reaction to higher temperatures for different periods of time is not. This information could be very useful after an accident such as a bearing fire, in determining the ability to return engine components to regular service would save enormous amounts of money in replacement part costs. Unfortunately the data to support such decisions does not exist. This project attempted to remedy that situation by providing the microstructural analysis needed to confidently make such decisions. Samples of IN-100 were heat treated for controlled temperatures and times, and subsequent quantitative microscopy was performed.
