On the lowest eigenvalue of Laplace operators with mixed boundary conditions
In this paper we consider a Robin-type Laplace operator on bounded domains.
We study the dependence of its lowest eigenvalue on the boundary conditions and
its asymptotic behavior in shrinking and expanding domains. For convex domains
we establish two-sided estimates on the lowest eigenvalues in terms of the
inradius and of the boundary conditions
Detection of Gravitational Redshift on the Solar Disk by Using Iodine-Cell Technique
With an aim to examine whether the predicted solar gravitational redshift can
be observationally confirmed under the influence of the convective Doppler
shift due to granular motions, we attempted measuring the absolute spectral
line-shifts on a large number of points over the solar disk based on an
extensive set of 5188-5212A region spectra taken through an iodine-cell with
the Solar Domeless Telescope at Hida Observatory. The resulting heliocentric
line shifts at the meridian line (where no rotational shift exists), which were
derived by finding the best-fit parameterized model spectrum with the observed
spectrum and corrected for the earth's motion, turned out to be weakly
position-dependent as ~ +400 m/s near the disk center and increasing toward the
limb up to ~ +600 m/s (both with a standard deviation of sigma ~ 100 m/s).
Interestingly, this trend tends to disappear when the convectiveshift due to
granular motions (~-300 m/s at the disk center and increasing toward the limb;
simulated based on the two-component model along with the empirical
center-to-limb variation) is subtracted, finally resulting in the averaged
shift of 698 m/s (sigma = 113 m/s). Considering the ambiguities involved in the
absolute wavelength calibration or in the correction due to convective Doppler
shifts (at least several tens m/s, or more likely up to <~100 m/s), we may
regard that this value is well consistent with the expected gravitational

Sedimentation record in the Konkan-Kerala Basin: implications for the evolution of the Western Ghats and the Western Indian passive margin
The Konkan and Kerala Basins constitute a major depocentre for sediment from the onshore hinterland of Western India and as such provide a valuable record of the timing and magnitude of Cenozoic denudation along the continental margin. This paper presents an analysis of sedimentation in the Konkan-Kerala Basin, coupledwith a mass balance study, and numerical modelling of flexural responses to onshore denudational unloading and o¡shore sediment loading in order to test competing conceptual models for the development of high-elevation passive margins. The Konkan-Kerala Basin contains an estimated 109,000 km<sup>3</sup>; of Cenozoic clastic sediment, a volume difficult to reconcile with the denudation of a downwarped rift flank onshore, and more consistent with denudation of an elevated rift flank. We infer from modelling of the isostatic response of the lithosphere to sediment loading offshore and denudation onshore that flexure is an important component in the development of the Western Indian Margin.There is evidence for two major pulses in sedimentation: an early phase in the Palaeocene, and a second beginning in the Pliocene. The Palaeocene increase in sedimentation can be interpreted in terms of a denudational response to the rifting between India and the Seychelles, whereas the mechanism responsible for the Pliocene pulse is more enigmatic
Superconductors with Magnetic Impurities: Instantons and Sub-gap States
When subject to a weak magnetic impurity potential, the order parameter and
quasi-particle energy gap of a bulk singlet superconductor are suppressed.
According to the conventional mean-field theory of Abrikosov and Gor'kov, the
integrity of the energy gap is maintained up to a critical concentration of
magnetic impurities. In this paper, a field theoretic approach is developed to
critically analyze the validity of the mean field theory. Using the
supersymmetry technique we find a spatially homogeneous saddle-point that
reproduces the Abrikosov-Gor'kov theory, and identify instanton contributions
to the density of states that render the quasi-particle energy gap soft at any
non-zero magnetic impurity concentration. The sub-gap states are associated
with supersymmetry broken field configurations of the action. An analysis of
fluctuations around these configurations shows how the underlying supersymmetry
of the action is restored by zero modes. An estimate of the density of states
is given for all dimensionalities. To illustrate the universality of the
present scheme we apply the same method to study `gap fluctuations' in a normal
quantum dot coupled to a superconducting terminal. Using the same instanton
approach, we recover the universal result recently proposed by Vavilov et al.
Finally, we emphasize the universality of the present scheme for the
description of gap fluctuations in d-dimensional superconducting/normal

On the Testing of Seismicity Models
Recently a likelihood-based methodology has been developed by the
Collaboratory for the Study of Earthquake Predictability (CSEP) with a view to
testing and ranking seismicity models. We analyze this approach from the
standpoint of possible applications to hazard analysis. We arrive at the
conclusion that model testing can be made more efficient by focusing on some
integral characteristics of the seismicity distribution. This is achieved
either in the likelihood framework but with economical and physically
reasonable coarsening of the phase space or by choosing a suitable measure of
closeness between empirical and model seismicity rate in this space.Comment: To appear at Acta Geophysic
FGF receptor genes and breast cancer susceptibility: results from the Breast Cancer Association Consortium
Background:Breast cancer is one of the most common malignancies in women. Genome-wide association studies have identified FGFR2 as a breast cancer susceptibility gene. Common variation in other fibroblast growth factor (FGF) receptors might also modify risk. We tested this hypothesis by studying genotyped single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and imputed SNPs in FGFR1, FGFR3, FGFR4 and FGFRL1 in the Breast Cancer Association Consortium.
Methods:Data were combined from 49 studies, including 53 835 cases and 50 156 controls, of which 89 050 (46 450 cases and 42 600 controls) were of European ancestry, 12 893 (6269 cases and 6624 controls) of Asian and 2048 (1116 cases and 932 controls) of African ancestry. Associations with risk of breast cancer, overall and by disease sub-type, were assessed using unconditional logistic regression.
Results:Little evidence of association with breast cancer risk was observed for SNPs in the FGF receptor genes. The strongest evidence in European women was for rs743682 in FGFR3; the estimated per-allele odds ratio was 1.05 (95 confidence interval=1.02-1.09, P=0.0020), which is substantially lower than that observed for SNPs in FGFR2.
Conclusion:Our results suggest that common variants in the other FGF receptors are not associated with risk of breast cancer to the degree observed for FGFR2. © 2014 Cancer Research UK

The Political Economy of Failure: The Euro as an International Currency
How do international currencies get established and consolidated? What domestic and international political foundations support an international currency? And what kinds of macro-economic flows enable an international currency? In this essay we consider these perennial questions of modern IPE scholarship in reverse order to ask whether the euro could ever have become, or seek to become, a true international currency rivalling the US dollar, used not only for passive foreign exchange reserves but also as a major commercial currency outside the EU. We argue that the EU lacks the will, the ideas and the capacity to promote the euro into the status of an international currency. In this article, we concentrate on this final issue of capacity, as the will and ideas issues have already been well explored. Capacity is an issue coeval with, if not prior to, the first two issues. The EU's current institutional arrangements and its economic geography create macro-economic consequences that diminish the euro's capacity to operate as a top currency. These conflicts go beyond the well-recognized issue that the euro-zone is not an optimum currency area. Examining the euro's debilities sheds light not only on the euro's (in)capacity to rival the dollar as an international currency, but also on the future of both the euro and the dollar in the aftermath of the euro-zone crisis
ZMYND11‐related syndromic intellectual disability: 16 patients delineating and expanding the phenotypic spectrum
Pathogenic variants in ZMYND11, which acts as a transcriptional repressor, have been associated with intellectual disability, behavioural abnormalities and seizures. Only 11 affected individuals have been reported to‐date, and the phenotype associated with pathogenic variants in this gene have not been fully defined.
Here, we present 16 additional patients with predicted pathogenic heterozygous variants in ZMYND11, including four individuals from the same family, to further delineate and expand the genotypic and phenotypic spectrum of ZMYND11‐related syndromic intellectual disability. The associated phenotype includes developmental delay, particularly affecting speech, mild‐moderate intellectual disability, significant behavioural abnormalities, seizures, and hypotonia. There are subtle shared dysmorphic features, including prominent eyelashes and eyebrows, depressed nasal bridge with bulbous nasal tip, anteverted nares, thin vermilion of the upper lip and wide mouth. Novel features include brachydactyly and tooth enamel hypoplasia.
Most identified variants are likely to result in premature truncation and/or nonsense mediated decay. Two ZMYND11 variants located in the final exon ‐ p.(Gln586*) (likely escaping nonsense‐mediated decay) and p.(Cys574Arg) ‐ are predicted to disrupt the MYND‐type zinc finger motif and likely interfere with binding to its interaction partners. Hence, the homogeneous phenotype likely results from a common mechanism of loss‐of‐function
US hegemony and the origins of Japanese nuclear power : the politics of consent
This paper deploys the Gramscian concepts of hegemony and consent in order to explore the process whereby nuclear power was brought to Japan. The core argument is that nuclear power was brought to Japan as a consequence of US hegemony. Rather than a simple manifestation of one state exerting material ‘power over' another, bringing nuclear power to Japan involved a series of compromises worked out within and between state and civil society in both Japan and the USA. Ideologies of nationalism, imperialism and modernity underpinned the process, coalescing in post-war debates about the future trajectory of Japanese society, Japan's Cold War alliance with the USA and the role of nuclear power in both. Consent to nuclear power was secured through the generation of a psychological state in the public mind combining the fear of nuclear attack and the hope of unlimited consumption in a nuclear-fuelled post-modern world
