Odorants for surveillance and control of the Asian Citrus Psyllid (Diaphorina citri).

BackgroundThe Asian Citrus Psyllid (ACP), Diaphorina citri, can transmit the bacterium Candidatus Liberibacter while feeding on citrus flush shoots. This bacterium causes Huanglongbing (HLB), a major disease of citrus cultivation worldwide necessitating the development of new tools for ACP surveillance and control. The olfactory system of ACP is sensitive to variety of odorants released by citrus plants and offers an opportunity to develop new attractants and repellents.ResultsIn this study, we performed single-unit electrophysiology to identify odorants that are strong activators, inhibitors, and prolonged activators of ACP odorant receptor neurons (ORNs). We identified a suite of odorants that activated the ORNs with high specificity and sensitivity, which may be useful in eliciting behavior such as attraction. In separate experiments, we also identified odorants that evoked prolonged ORN responses and antagonistic odorants able to suppress neuronal responses to activators, both of which can be useful in lowering attraction to hosts. In field trials, we tested the electrophysiologically identified activating odorants and identified a 3-odor blend that enhances trap catches by ∼230%.ConclusionThese findings provide a set of odorants that can be used to develop affordable and safe odor-based surveillance and masking strategies for this dangerous pest insect

A regulação emocional num grupo de Jardim de infância

Relatório de Prática Profissional Supervisionada II apresentado à Escola Superior de Educação de Lisboa para obtenção de grau de mestre em Educação Pré-EscolarO presente relatório constitui-se como uma análise crítica e reflexiva sobre a prática e a investigação desenvolvida no âmbito da Prática Profissional Supervisionada. Esta decorreu em jardim de infância, com um grupo de 19 crianças com idades compreendidas entre os 3 e 4 anos. No âmbito da prática desenvolvida surgiu o objeto de estudo que dá nome ao relatório: a regulação emocional num grupo de jardim de infância. Seguindo a metodologia de investigação-ação, a presente investigação tinha dois grandes objetivos: i) Qual o papel do adulto na gestão das emoções, e ii) De que forma é que a área da calma influencia a gestão emocional das crianças. Para o efeito, foi elaborada uma grelha de observação de frequência na área da calma, sendo esta suportada pelas notas de campo redigidas. Existiu ainda necessidade de realizar uma entrevista à equipa educativa. Os resultados da investigação mostram que o papel do adulto na regulação emocional das crianças é de mediador, devendo fornecer às crianças os caminhos mais acertados e respetivas ferramentas. A implementação da área da calma permitiu observar melhorias na regulação emocional das crianças, promovendo a utilização de diferentes objetos. O que resultou em que as crianças dessem o primeiro passo para que se auto regularem.ABSTRACT This report is a critical and reflective analysis of the practice and research developed within the Supervised Professional Practice. This took place in a kindergarten, with a group of 19 children aged between 3 and 4 years. Within the scope of the practice developed, the object of study that gives name to the report emerged: the emotional regulation in a kindergarten group. Following the action research methodology, this research had two main objectives: to understand: i) what is the adult's role in emotion management, and ii) how the area of calmness influences children's emotional management. To this end, a grid of frequency observation in the area of calmness was developed and supported by field notes. There was also the need to interview the education team. The results of the investigation show that the role of the adult in the emotional regulation of children is that of a mediator, providing children with the best ways and tools. The implementation of the calm zone allowed us to observe improvements in the children's emotional regulation, promoting the use of different tools. Memoir-based writing has long represented one of the pillars for the construction of the writer’s image, or at least of the adult writer. The diary is considered to be a genre that reveals the intimate scenes as well as the cultural background of the portrayed self. Through the reading of Zlata Filipoviæ’s diary, this work aims at grasping elements that help delineating a path which includes childhood reminiscences. Furthermore, this work intends to verify in what manner the status of literary text was conceded to this book and to what extent it may contribute to validate a possible notion of infant writing in our days.A escrita de base memorialista desde ha muito representa um dos pilares para a construcao da imagem do escritor, ou pelo menos, do escritor adulto. Bizarre suicide by handsaw: A case report

Suicides involving any kind of saw are rare events. The use of handsaws in particular is even more exceptional. Forensic literature indicates that self-inflicted injuries using these instruments are most often found in men, frequently suffering from psychiatric pathologies, and with a history of previous suicidal attempts. Furthermore, the most common locations for such injuries are the head and neck. This paper focuses on the case of a 76-year-old man with a history of psychiatric disease, found dead at home together with a suicide note and a handsaw. Post mortem exam revealed sharp wounds in the anterior face of the neck, with an irregular section of the muscles, thyroid, trachea, and left internal jugular vein. Further satellite wounds were consistent with hesitation injuries. After a thorough investigation of the scene and considering the results of the autopsy as well as other ancillary analysis, the cause of death was determined as traumatic neck injuries and the case classified as a suicide. By reporting this highly unusual case, the authors intend to highlight the complexity associated with diagnosing such occurrences, mainly in determining the mode of death and aim at helping future pathologists when facing similar circumstances

Princípio de permanência da substância e reações químicas

This article investigates a possible counterpoint to the first Kant’s analogy: chemical reactions. For that, conservation law in general is defined according to the understanding of science. These laws have a constant defined form for all of them and contents that differentiate them. The first analogy of the experience or doctrine of Kant's substance is explained by showing that any change we notice in our perceptions in a certain event is only possible if something in that same event does not change. The link between the doctrine of the substance and chemical equations is based on the example of burning firewood in the Kant’s CPR. To discover the substance of any event (including chemical reactions), the difference between transcendental (philosophical) and empirical (scientific) research is discussed. Empirical research is understood as subordinate to transcendental research, therefore proving that chemistry is compatible with Kant’s substance doctrine.Esse artigo investiga um possível contraponto à primeira analogia kantiana: as reações químicas. Para tanto se define lei de conservação em geral de acordo com o entendimento da ciência. Essas leis tem uma forma definida constante para todas elas e conteúdos que as diferenciam. Explica-se a primeira analogia da experiência ou doutrina da substância de Kant mostrando que qualquer mudança que notamos em nossas percepções num dado evento, só é possível se algo nesse mesmo evento não sofrer mutação. O elo de ligação da doutrina da substância com as equações químicas é feito a partir do exemplo da queima da lenha na CRP de Kant. Para descobrir qual seja a substância de qualquer evento (inclusive reações químicas) aborda-se a diferença entre pesquisa transcendental (filosófica) e pesquisa empírica (científica). A pesquisa empírica é entendida como subordinada à pesquisa transcendental, dessa maneira prova-se que a química é compatível com a doutrina da substância de Kant

HABERMAS, RATZINGER E OS PROVEITOS DO DIÁLOGO ENTRE FILOSOFIA E RELIGIÃO

This text works in the defense of the dialogical rapprochement between faith and reason. The text was constructed considering the reciprocal effect between two tensions: naturalism x religion and secular citizens x religious citizens. The first dispute is purely theoretical and addresses the narrowing of rationality led by naturalism and the loss of rational motivation to think morality. The second one concerns the socio-political relations between believers and non-believers in a post secular society. The meeting point of these rivalries is in a vicious circle where disputes feed each other and both sides end up with irreparable losses. Supported by Habermas and Ratzinger we seek to overcome these tensions through the idea of mutual learning between differences, showing in a new perspective that the recovery of the ancient and productive relationship between religion and philosophy is the only chance to overcome the confrontations standardized by a virtuous circularity between faith and reason.Esse texto trabalha na defesa da reaproximação dialógica entre fé e razão. O texto foi construído considerando o recíproco efeito entre duas tensões: naturalismo x religião e cidadãos seculares x cidadãos religiosos.  A primeira disputa é puramente teórica e aborda o estreitamento da racionalidade conduzido pelo naturalismo e a perda de motivação racional para se pensar a moral. A segunda versa sobre as relações sócio-políticas entre crentes e não crentes numa sociedade pós-secular. O ponto de encontro dessas rivalidades está num círculo vicioso onde as disputas se retroalimentam mutuamente e ambos os lados terminam com perdas irreparáveis. Com Habermas e Ratzinger buscamos superar essas tensões através da ideia de aprendizado mútuo entre as diferenças mostrando que a retomada, em nova perspectiva, da antiga e produtiva relação entre religião e filosofia, é a única chance de superação dos confrontos normatizada por uma circularidade virtuosa entre fé e razão

This paper focuses on the duty of diligence of the parent companies to stakeholders of their subsidiaries in the field of human rights, overcoming (partially) the traditional rule of subjective and asset partitioning of the entities that are members of the group.La propuesta de Directiva sobre diligencia debida de las empresas en materia de sostenibilidad [COM(2022) 71 final] establece obligaciones para prevenir los efectos negativos sobre los derechos humanos y el medio ambiente y reaccionar ante ellos. Este artículo se centra en la diligencia debida de las sociedades matrices frente a las partes interesadas de las sociedades filiales en materia de derechos humanos, superando (en buena medida) la regla tradicional de autonomía subjetiva y patrimonial de las entidades que integran el grupo
