Some properties of the resonant state in quantum mechanics and its computation
The resonant state of the open quantum system is studied from the viewpoint
of the outgoing momentum flux. We show that the number of particles is
conserved for a resonant state, if we use an expanding volume of integration in
order to take account of the outgoing momentum flux; the number of particles
would decay exponentially in a fixed volume of integration. Moreover, we
introduce new numerical methods of treating the resonant state with the use of
the effective potential. We first give a numerical method of finding a
resonance pole in the complex energy plane. The method seeks an energy
eigenvalue iteratively. We found that our method leads to a super-convergence,
the convergence exponential with respect to the iteration step. The present
method is completely independent of commonly used complex scaling. We also give
a numerical trick for computing the time evolution of the resonant state in a
limited spatial area. Since the wave function of the resonant state is
diverging away from the scattering potential, it has been previously difficult

First year student expectations: Results from a university-wide student survey
Although much has been written on the first-year experience of students at higher education institutions, less attention has been directed to the expectations of students when they enter an institution for the first time. This paper provides additional insights into the expectations of students at an Australian university and highlights areas in which students’ expectations may not necessarily align with the realities of common university practices. Cardiovascular risk profile and frailty in a population-based study of older British men.
BACKGROUND: Frailty in older age is known to be associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. However, the extent to which frailty is associated with the CVD risk profile has been little studied. Our aim was to examine the associations of a range of cardiovascular risk factors with frailty and to assess whether these are independent of established CVD.
METHODS: Cross-sectional study of a socially representative sample of 1622 surviving men aged 71-92 examined in 2010-2012 across 24 British towns, from a prospective study initiated in 1978-1980. Frailty was defined using the Fried phenotype, including weight loss, grip strength, exhaustion, slowness and low physical activity.
RESULTS: Among 1622 men, 303 (19%) were frail and 876 (54%) were pre-frail. Compared with non-frail, those with frailty had a higher odds of obesity (OR 2.03, 95% CI 1.38 to 2.99), high waist circumference (OR 2.30, 95% CI 1.67 to 3.17), low high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) (OR 2.28, 95% CI 1.47 to 3.54) and hypertension (OR 1.79, 95% CI 1.27 to 2.54). Prevalence of these factors was also higher in those with frailty (prevalence in frail vs non-frail groups was 46% vs 31% for high waist circumference, 20% vs 11% for low HDL and 78% vs 65% for hypertension). Frail individuals had a worse cardiovascular risk profile with an increased risk of high heart rate, poor lung function (forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1)), raised white cell count (WCC), poor renal function (low estimated glomerular filtration rate), low alanine transaminase and low serum sodium. Some risk factors (HDL-C, hypertension, WCC, FEV1, renal function and albumin) were also associated with being pre-frail. These associations remained when men with prevalent CVD were excluded.
CONCLUSIONS: Frailty was associated with increased risk of a range of cardiovascular factors (including obesity, HDL-C, hypertension, heart rate, lung function, renal function) in older people; these associations were independent of established CVD
Sums of hermitian squares and the BMV conjecture
Recently Lieb and Seiringer showed that the Bessis-Moussa-Villani conjecture
from quantum physics can be restated in the following purely algebraic way: The
sum of all words in two positive semidefinite matrices where the number of each
of the two letters is fixed is always a matrix with nonnegative trace. We show
that this statement holds if the words are of length at most 13. This has
previously been known only up to length 7. In our proof, we establish a
connection to sums of hermitian squares of polynomials in noncommuting
variables and to semidefinite programming. As a by-product we obtain an example
of a real polynomial in two noncommuting variables having nonnegative trace on
all symmetric matrices of the same size, yet not being a sum of hermitian

The Rotating Mass Matrix, the Strong CP Problem and Higgs Decay
We investigate a recent solution to the strong CP problem, obtaining a
theta-angle of order unity, and show that a smooth trajectory of the massive
eigenvector of a rank-one rotating mass matrix is consistent with the
experimental data for both fermion masses and mixing angles (except for the
masses of the lightest quarks). Using this trajectory we study Higgs decay and
find suppression of compared to the standard model
predictions for a range of Higgs masses. We also give limits for flavour
violating decays, including a relatively large branching ratio for the

High risk prescribing in older adults: Prevalence, clinical and economic implications and potential for intervention at the population level
Background: High risk prescribing can compromise independent wellbeing and quality of life in older adults. The aims of this project are to determine the prevalence, risk factors, clinical consequences, and costs of high risk prescribing, and to assess the impact of interventions on high risk prescribing in older people. Methods. The proposed project will utilise data from the 45 and Up Study, a large scale cohort of 267,153 men and women aged 45 and over recruited during 2006-2009 from the state of New South Wales, Australia linked to a range of administrative health datasets. High risk prescribing will be assessed using three indicators: polypharmacy (use of five or more medicines); Beers Criteria (an explicit measure of potentially inappropriate medication use); and Drug Burden Index (a pharmacologic dose-dependent measure of cumulative exposure to anticholinergic and sedative medicines). Individual risk factors from the 45 and Up Study questionnaire, and health system characteristics from health datasets that are associated with the likelihood of high risk prescribing will be identified. The main outcome measures will include hospitalisation (first admission to hospital, total days in hospital, cause-specific hospitalisation); admission to institutionalised care; all-cause mortality, and, where possible, cause-specific mortality. Economic costs to the health care system and implications of high risk prescribing will be also investigated. In addition, changes in high risk prescribing will be evaluated in relation to certain routine medicines-related interventions. The statistical analysis will be conducted using standard pharmaco-epidemiological methods including descriptive analysis, univariate and multivariate regression analysis, controlling for relevant confounding factors, using a number of different approaches. Discussion. The availability of large-scale data is useful to identify opportunities for improving prescribing, and health in older adults. The size of the 45 and Up Study, along with linkage to health databases provides an important opportunity to investigate the relationship between high risk prescribing and adverse outcomes in a real-world population of older adults. © 2013 Gnjidic et al.; licensee BioMed Central Ltd
How well do services for young people with long term conditions deliver features proposed to improve transition?
Background - For young people with long-term conditions, transition from child to adult-oriented health services is a critical period which, if not managed well, may lead to poor outcomes. There are features of transition services which guidance and research suggest improve outcomes. We studied nine such features, calling them ‘proposed beneficial features’: age-banded clinic; meet adult team before transfer; promotion of health self-efficacy; written transition plan; appropriate parent involvement; key worker; coordinated team; holistic life-skills training; transition manager for clinical team. We aimed to describe the extent to which service providers offer these nine features, and to compare this with young people’s reported experience of them.
Methods - A longitudinal, mixed methods study followed 374 young people as their care moved from child to adult health services. Participants had type 1 diabetes, cerebral palsy or autism spectrum disorder with additional mental health difficulties. Data are reported from the first two visits, one year apart.
Results - Three hundred four (81.3%) of the young people took part in the second visit (128 with diabetes, 91 with autism, 85 with cerebral palsy). Overall, the nine proposed beneficial features of transition services were poorly provided. Fewer than half of services stated they provided an age-banded clinic, written transition plan, transition manager for clinical team, a protocol for promotion of health self-efficacy, or holistic life-skills training.
To varying degrees, young people reported that they had not experienced the features which services said they provided. For instance, the agreement for written transition plan, holistic life-skills training and key worker, was 30, 43 and 49% respectively. Agreement was better for appropriate parent involvement, age-banded clinic, promotion of health self-efficacy and coordinated team at 77, 77, 80 and 69% respectively. Variation in the meaning of the features as experienced by young people and families was evident from qualitative interviews and observations.
Conclusions - UK services provide only some of the nine proposed beneficial features for supporting healthcare transition of young people with long term conditions.
Observational studies or trials which examine the influence of features of transition services on outcomes should ensure that the experiences of young people and families are captured, and not rely on service specifications
The Relationship between Fenestrations, Sieve Plates and Rafts in Liver Sinusoidal Endothelial Cells
Fenestrations are transcellular pores in endothelial cells that facilitate transfer of substrates between blood and the extravascular compartment. In order to understand the regulation and formation of fenestrations, the relationship between membrane rafts and fenestrations was investigated in liver sinusoidal endothelial cells where fenestrations are grouped into sieve plates. Three dimensional structured illumination microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, internal reflectance fluorescence microscopy and two-photon fluorescence microscopy were used to study liver sinusoidal endothelial cells isolated from mice. There was an inverse distribution between sieve plates and membrane rafts visualized by structured illumination microscopy and the fluorescent raft stain, Bodipy FL C5 ganglioside GM1. 7-ketocholesterol and/or cytochalasin D increased both fenestrations and lipid-disordered membrane, while Triton X-100 decreased both fenestrations and lipid-disordered membrane. The effects of cytochalasin D on fenestrations were abrogated by co-administration of Triton X-100, suggesting that actin disruption increases fenestrations by its effects on membrane rafts. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) depleted lipid-ordered membrane and increased fenestrations. The results are consistent with a sieve-raft interaction, where fenestrations form in non-raft lipid-disordered regions of endothelial cells once the membrane-stabilizing effects of actin cytoskeleton and membrane rafts are diminished.Full Tex
Nontrivial eigenvalues of the Liouvillian of an open quantum system
We present methods of finding complex eigenvalues of the Liouvillian of an
open quantum system. The goal is to find eigenvalues that cannot be predicted
from the eigenvalues of the corresponding Hamiltonian. Our model is a T-type
quantum dot with an infinitely long lead. We suggest the existence of the
non-trivial eigenvalues of the Liouvillian in two ways: one way is to show that
the original problem reduces to the problem of a two-particle Hamiltonian with
a two-body interaction and the other way is to show that diagram expansion of
the Green's function has correlation between the bra state and the ket state.
We also introduce the integral equations equivalent to the original eigenvalue
