    Biodiversity of vertebrates in Argentina: patterns of richness, endemism and conservation status

    Optimising conservation efforts requires an accurate record of the extant species as well as their geographic distributions. Nevertheless, most current conservation strategies start from an incomplete biodiversity inventory. Argentina has an extraordinary diversity of species, however, until now an updated inventory of its fauna has not been carried out. In this context, the main objective of this work is to present the results of the first national inventory of vertebrate species. Experts from each major vertebrate taxonomic group assembled and compiled its respective inventory. The information gathered included taxonomic rank, conservation status, endemism and geographic distribution. Species richness and representativeness were calculated for each taxonomic group, distinguishing between native, endemic and exotic, for each Argentinian province. Our results show Argentina harbours 3,303 species: 574 marine fish, 561 freshwater fish, 177 amphibians, 450 reptiles, 1,113 birds, and 428 mammals. Native species constitute 98.1% of the total taxa. The results achieved were spatially represented showing a pattern of higher richness from north to south and from east to west. Species considered as threatened account for 17.8% and 15.2% are endemic. There are five Extinct species. These results provide key information on developing strategies and public policies at the national and provincial levels and constitute a tool for the management and conservation of biodiversity.Fil: Bauni, Valeria.     Detailed descriptions of morphological features, morphometrics, neurocranium anatomy, clasper structure and egg case descriptions are provided for the thickbody skate Amblyraja frerichsi; a rare, deep-water species from Chile, Argentina and Falkland Islands. The species diagnosis is complemented from new observations and aspects such as colour, size and distribution are described. Geographic and bathymetric distributional ranges are discussed as relevant features of this taxońs biology. Additionally, the conservation status is assessed including bycatch records from Chilean fisheries

    A collaboratively derived environmental research agenda for Galapagos

    Galápagos is one of the most pristine archipelagos in the world and its conservation relies upon research and sensible management. In recent decades both the interest in, and the needs of, the islands have increased, yet the funds and capacity for necessary research have remained limited. It has become, therefore, increasingly important to identify areas of priority research to assist decision-making in Galápagos conservation. This study identified 50 questions considered priorities for future research and management. The exercise involved the collaboration of policy makers, practitioners and researchers from more than 30 different organisations. Initially, 360 people were consulted to generate 781 questions. An established process of preworkshop voting and three rounds to reduce and reword the questions, followed by a two-day workshop, was used to produce the final 50 questions. The most common issues raised by this list of questions were human population growth, climate change and the impact of invasive alien species. These results have already been used by a range of organisations and politicians and are expected to provide the basis for future research on the islands so that its sustainability may be enhanced. </jats:p

    Écrire, disent-ils - Regards croisés sur la littérature du XXIe siècle

    À l'origine de cet ouvrage, des rencontres : rencontres avec des écrivains reçus à l'Université Nancy 2, rencontres avec des textes contemporains. Le principe d’Écrire, disent-ils a donc été de faire se côtoyer le commentaire d’une œuvre et la parole vivante d’un auteur. D’un côté, des écrivains, romanciers (J.-P. Toussaint, T. Viel, L. Salvayre, F. Bégaudeau, Yun Sun Limet), mais aussi dramaturge (J.-P. Siméon) ou poète (J. Roubaud), font entendre le sens que peut recouvrir aujourd’hui l’acte d’écrire. De l’autre, des textes sur ces auteurs proposent sur leurs œuvres des éclairages choisis et rendent sensible à ce qui les distingue mais aussi à ce qui les rapproche : une attention à la langue et une recherche de l’hybridité stylistique, un travail de reconfiguration du réel, une volonté de réfléchir le monde et le social. Que signifie « être écrivain » à l’aube du XXIe siècle ? Comment se pense aujourd’hui le rapport de l’écriture au langage et au monde ? Quels liens avec l’héritage littéraire du XXe siècle ? Quels sont les enjeux de la littérature dite « contemporaine », enjeux esthétiques, mais aussi sociaux, idéologiques, voire politiques ? Telles sont quelques-unes des interrogations qui traversent ce volume, premier d’une série que nous espérons durable.     Este trabajo de tesis propone las ideas de tres jóvenes, que, en su incursión en la arquitectura ecológica y sustentable han visto la oportunidad para mostrar sus ideas y su interés en ayudar a un lugar donde no se habla de un patrimonio arquitectónico, intentando otorgar, en este caso, a Puerto Ayora, en la isla de Santa Cruz, el diseño de tres opciones de viviendas cuyo propósito es mostrar las bondades materiales obtenidos en el archipiélago, así como, otorgar una identidad arquitectónica, llevados por la investigación minuciosa que va desde la historia de las islas, hasta los aspectos económicos y la forma de vivir de los galapagueños, siendo ésta, una sociedad pluricultural conformada por la llegada de personas de todos los rincones del Ecuador continental, influenciada por las tendencias actuales y que poco o nada ha sabido respetar y/o relacionarse con su entorno.ArquitectoCuenc

    Cooperative breeding alters physiological and behavioral responses to habitat fragmentation

    Animals respond to habitat alteration with changes in their behavior and physiology. These changes determine individual performance and thus precede changes in population size. They are therefore hypothesized to provide important insights into how animals cope with environmental change. Here, we investigated physiological and behavioral responses of a cooperatively breeding bird, the placid greenbul (Phyllastrephus placidus), in a severely fragmented tropical biodiversity hotspot and combined these data with remotely sensed (LiDAR) environmental data. We found that individuals had increased glucocorticoid hormone levels when breeding in territories with low native canopy cover or located within small fragments. However, when breeding with the help of subordinates, breeders in low quality territories had similar glucocorticoid levels as those in higher quality territories. Our study shows that sociality may impact how well animals cope with environmental change and contributes to our understanding of the role of glucocorticoid physiology and behavior in response to anthropogenic change.Peer reviewe
