The legal concept of discrimination by association: where does it fit into the digital era?
Personal autonomy, a core human rights principle, refers to the ability to both design and conduct the course of one’s life through making choices from a range of valuable options. This plays a pivotal role in the realm of equality and non discrimination, which are relevant in the context of the European Union (EU). Through case law, the concept of discrimination by association has emerged as a crucial step in strengthening anti-discrimination, recognising that individuals who are not part of a protected group but who have a relationship with someone who is, or are in some way associated with them, may be treated unfavourably, thus requiring appropriate remedies. Currently, the field of non-discrimination increasingly warrants attention, due to the rapid advancement of technology, which harbours unique discriminatory potential. For instance, through data mining and the use of artificial intelligence tools for profiling and clustering, people may be grouped based on collective characteristics that may not accurately represent their individual features, resulting in differential treatment regardless of whether legally recognised vulnerable groups are involved. It therefore becomes crucial to question to what extent discrimination by association can effectively address this discriminatory power or whether new measures need to be developed to safeguard personal autonomy and prevent the proliferation of such phenomena in the current digital landscape
Demographic ageing and vulnerability in the European Union: a brief analysis of the challenges and opportunities it poses
The pronounced ageing of the European population has multidimensional repercussions at the socio-economic level, which the European Union has been addressing. In this context, concerns about intergenerational solidarity and social sustainability are gaining prominence and constitute the cornerstones of the life-cycle approach embodied in the European Commission’s Green Paper on Ageing: Fostering solidarity and responsibility between generations, published in 2021. In this article, we aim to address the underlying challenges, as well as the opportunities that these demographic trends present in the European Union today, placing special focus on the aforementioned report. We also highlight important stakeholder inputs on this issue, notably the recommendation to put in place a human-rights based approach regarding the rights of older people in the European Union. It is also our intention to explore the notion of vulnerability associated with the elderly, essentially addressing the extent to which it can be applied uniformly to this group, and to briefly evaluate the concept of vulnerability in light of emerging theories that render it as a universal aspect of human life
Human rights violations on post-terrorist attacks situations: A comparison of France and the United Kingdom
This study is about how the terrorist attacks in Paris and United Kingdom between 2015 and 2017 influenced the violation of human rights in Muslim communities, with a special focus in Muslim women.
The policies adopted by governments and the media speculation revolving in Islam created a fertile environment for a rise in Islamophobic attacks in these two countries, among other factors, which contributed for a restriction of fundamental rights and liberties in these communities.
The main objective of this dissertation is therefore, to understand, with the help of interviews with various individuals related to this area, in which way some of these rights were being retrieved and by which policies, and what was the role of the society as a whole in the phenomenon.
Cluster analysis of financial time series
This thesis applies the Signature method as a measurement of similarities between two time-series objects, using the Signature properties of order 2, and its application to Asymmetric Spectral Clustering. The method is compared with a more Traditional Clustering approach where similarities are measured using Dynamic Time Warping, developed to work with time-series data. The intention for this is to consider the traditional approach as a benchmark and compare it to the Signature method through computation times, performance, and applications. These methods are applied to a financial time series data set of Mutual Exchange Funds from Luxembourg.
After the literature review, we introduce the Dynamic Time Warping method and the Signature method. We continue with the explanation of Traditional Clustering approaches, namely k-Means, and Asymmetric Clustering techniques, namely the k-Axes algorithm, developed by Atev (2011). The last chapter is dedicated to Practical Research where the previous methods are applied to the data set. Results confirm that the Signature method has indeed potential for machine learning and prediction, as suggested by Levin, Lyons, and Ni (2013).info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS).
The present study aimed to characterize the processes of expert assessment, under the
regulation of parental responsibilities (RPR) and, more specifically, families where resistance to visits
occurs by the minor (s) (Study I). In addition, a characterization of the variables that drive and
maintain resistance to visits by the minor was performed (Study II). The sample in both studies
consisted of 43 cases of RPR, made available by the Justice and Community Unit of the Psychology
Department of the University of Minho.
The information was gathered through consultation and document analysis of RPR processes
and subject to descriptive tests and inferences to the information processing using the Statistical
Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) program.
The results of the study I - the processes and families characteristics - demonstrated a greater
number of cases of RPR in children who demonstrated resistance to face visits of one of the parents, in
the years 2008 and 2009. The items not specified were the most frequent, being the targets of
evaluation mainly the child and both parents. In addition, the temporary child custody excelled only by
a single custody, mostly in charge of the mother. Regarding the characterization of families we have
found that in most cases the parent rejected by the minor was also the non custodial parent,
specifically the father, with a considerable number of allegations of domestic violence by the mother.
Furthermore, if on one hand it can be concluded that in general the progenitors from their self-report
revealed adaptively cope with the process of separation and divorce (IGS <1), on the other children
demonstrated more difficulties in adjustment, revealing few coping strategies.
Regarding the study II - factors that promote and maintain the resistance to visits - the results
show that resistance to visits by minors can result from several factors that need to be analyzed from a
broader context. In fact, the results show that the minor’s resistance to contact with the rejected parent
should not be solely to manipulation of a parent or to the child's characteristics, but a set of variables
such as the expectations of the child and the parents as to custody and visits, the presence of
suggestibility, allegations of domestic violence, the influence of parents and family in the visits
resistance and symptoms of the child itself

The general mechanisms of attack of nitrogen nucleophiles on carbonyl compounds: facts that determine the change of the rate-pH profiles
It have been described a general mechanism for the attack step of the reactions between nitrogen nucleophiles and carbonyl compounds to form a neutral tetrahedral addition intermediate. This general mechanism is based on the relative importance of the "concerted" hydronium-ion catalyzed attack of the nitrogen base on the carbonyl compound with respect to the "step wise" mechanism that involves the previous formation of a zwitterionic tetrahedral intermediate (T±) and the posterior proton transfer to it from the hydronium-ion. The relative importance of this pathway gives origin to three kinds of profile rates vs pH for these reactions. On the other hand, the importance of the "stepwise" mechanism was attributed to a dependence on the stability of the T± intermediate that is related to the pKa of the nitrogen base and the Kad (the equilibrium constant for the formation of the neutral tetrahedral addition intermediate (T0)). The comparison of the reactions of p-chlorobenzaldehyde and norcamphor with different nitrogen nucleophiles led to the observation that the general mechanism depends on each type of carbonyl compound. This is due to the great influence of the steric and electronic effects of the compounds structure, and the fact that the pKa value of the nitrogen base, which is more related to the stability of the T± than the T0 intermediate, is more important as a factor of prediction of the profiles than the value of Kad, this value being more related to the stability of the T0 intermediate
Assim, no

the organizational path and encouraged individuals to deliver the strategy and seek
improvements in the organizational space
feminina. O objetivo deste estudo é adaptar cultural e linguisticamente a versão original do PRAFAB
A amostra do pré-teste considerou o questionário curto, compreensÃvel e
