With technological advances, the human being becomes more and
more reliant on technology. We use technology to work, to improve
our social experiences, to learn, among many other activities.
Medicine is no exception to this. It is common to hear about
concepts originated on Science Fiction coming to life in areas such
as spatial exploration or even communication. It is important to
realise how Science Fiction helps teams working in those domains,
as well as understand what consumers expect for the future.
However, we rarely hear about Science Fiction directly influencing
Medicine. Has this field also benefited from Science Fiction to
create new or enhanced existing artifacts? This literary and
cinematic genre pushes the boundaries of what is thought
"possible" by idealizing artifacts that go beyond what is conceivable
in their time. It is an outlet for those who want to imagine what the
future might hold, without forgetting to distinguish the possible or
plausible from the fantastical. In this dissertation, we go through
how Science Fiction can be used as a guide to developing Medical
Artifacts, as well as devise a framework that has the potential to
help their developers make more informed decisions about the
characteristics of those artifacts. MADIS - Medical Artifact Design
Inspired by Science Fiction - is a framework that incorporates the
knowledge acquired during the research and interviews with
medical professionals to create a tool which supports the
development of Medical Artifacts through the lens of Science
Fiction.
consumidores esperam do futuro. No entanto, raramente ouvimos
adquirido durante a pesquisa e as entrevistas feitas a profissionais
Input variability and late acquisition: clitic misplacement in European Portuguese
This paper reports a study on the acquisition of clitic placement by European Portuguese children aged 5, 6 and 7, using an elicitation task. Contrarily to what has been found for other languages, where children correctly place clitic pronouns from a very early age, our results show that European Portuguese children still misplace clitics at age 7, although there is a developmental effect from 5 to 7: they overuse enclisis in proclisis contexts, but not the other way round. This confirms previous studies based on spontaneous production. Our study shows, however, that: i) the rates of clitic misplacement are not identical in all proclisis contexts; ii) proclisis is acquired earlier in some contexts; iii) the contexts that are harder to acquire are the ones where we find more variability in the adult control group, and where diachronic data are not so categorical. We argue that, since clitic placement in European Portuguese is not linked to the finite/non finite distinction, there is a slower developmental path, reflecting the complexity of the input and the specific properties of lexical items and syntactic contexts
Volatility scaling applied to investment-grade bond portfolios
Scaling excess returns in investment-grade bond portfolios by their past volatility does not
increase risk-adjusted returns nor Sharpe Ratios, even considering longer or shorter periods
with different degrees of volatility. This is observed for the United States bond market in US
dollars. I would expect that volatility scaling could increase alphas for the lowest rated bond
portfolios of my sample, that theoretically incorporate a higher degree of equity features, BAA
bond portfolios, but that was not the case. When I isolate the credit or default risk from the
expected returns, I also verify the inexistence of volatility management risk-adjusted returns.
Major institutional holdings, buy and hold strategies typical of bondholders, mean reversion of
returns for long-term investments, liquidity constraints, regulatory procedures, transaction
costs, all can be reasons why the volatility scaling strategies are not worthwhile.
rendimentos acrescidos
Effects of carbon source, carbon concentration and culture conditions on in vitro rooting of Pinus pinea L. microshoots
In stone pine (Pinus pinea L.), clonal propagation via adventitious shoot formation from cotyledons has been reported before but rooting of these shoots is poor. The number of rooted shoots had low frequency limiting the used of micropropagation protocols as a choice for mass propagation of superior genotypes. Therefore the main objective of the present work was to increase the number and quality of roots per shoot in order to ensure the survival and growth of a great number of plants in the acclimation phase. To achieve this, different combinations of carbon source (sucrose or glucose) at different concentrations, under different environmental conditions (temperature and light), were tested in the induction and expression phases of the adventitious root formation. Shoots of different clones obtained via organogenesis have been employed for the experiments. Observations were made on the rooting percentage, root length and number of roots per shoot. The results showed a general increased of the number of roots per shoot and an earlier root formation when glucose was used as a carbon source. However, there were no differences in the percentage of rooting between the carbons sources tested. The best results were obtained using 0.117 M of glucose and dark treatment combined with 19°C during the induction phase of the rhizogenic process. Light and low sugar concentration proved to be beneficial for the expression phase, increasing the root length. A remarkable interclonal difference in the ability to form roots was observed. It was possible to obtain a rooting percentage of more than 75% in several of the tested clones
Cow’s milk protein allergy: the hidden danger of medicines’ excipients
Communication abstract: Proceedings of the 5th International Congress of CiiEM - Reducing inequalities in Health and Society, held at Egas Moniz’ University Campus in Monte de Caparica, Almada, from June 16th to 18th, 2021.This is an open access article distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution License which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. In patients with a cow’s milk protein allergy, the presence of these allergens in medicines, even in trace amounts, can trigger serious allergic reactions. The study of milk-related excipient prevalence in 165 antiasthmatic medicines, based on the information included in the Summary of Product Characteristics, revealed the presence of lactose in more than one third of these medicines. Since lactose may suffer cross-contamination with cow’s milk protein, these results are an alert to health professionals.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

No

Project PREPIT Pregraduate Research Program - Impact and Trajectories : análise bibliométrica
participantes do projeto GAPIC.
This internship report was carried out within the project PREPIT Pregraduate
Research Program – Impact and Trajectories, corresponding to the phase of
identification and analysis of the scientific production published in journals indexed in
the Scopus and Web of Science (WoS) databases of medical students who have been
admitted to one or more "Education through Science" programs, between 1997/1998 and
2016/2017, promoted by the Scientific Research Support Office (GAPIC) of the Faculty
of Medicine of the University of Lisbon.
The work has a general objective, which is to analyse the scientific production of
the participants in the GAPIC project. To achieve this objective, three specific objectives
were defined: to correctly identify the GAPIC participants as authors of publications
indexed in Scopus and WoS and collect their publications between 1997 and 2021; to
analyse the scientific production of these authors indexed in Scopus and WoS, using
bibliometric analysis and to characterize, based on a sample, the production indexed in
Scopus between 2012 and 2021.
The report used a quantitative approach to analyse the research of Science
Education Programmes participants, but also a qualitative approach in terms of content
analysis. We used primarily bibliometric analysis and content analysis as techniques for
data collection and treatment. Data were collected from the Scopus and WoS databases
and analysed using Microsoft Excel, SciVal and VOSViewer.
A total of 277 researchers were analysed with a total of 2583 publications indexed
in Scopus and 2820 in WoS. The analysis of the results revealed that 62.25% of the
participants have publications indexed in Scopus and Web of Science, which
demonstrates that most of the participants contribute to the dissemination of scientific
knowledge
Non-traditional and traditional engineering students’ academic expectations
This study compares the initial academic expectations of two groups of Portuguese first-year colege students in engineering programs: traditional students and non-traditional students. Non-traditional students were considered all students who assessed Higher Education (HE) with over 23 years of age. Participants included 430 students. Students answered a questionnaire about their expectations regarding experiences in the focusing on five dimensions: Training for career development, Quality of training, Social interaction, Adjustment to social pressure, and Political engagement and citizenship. Results showed that younger students present a profile of overall higher expectations, when compared to older students. Such a difference is more evident in the dimensions Adjustment to social pressure and Social interaction, and weaker in the dimensions Political engagement and citizenship, and Training for career development. Expectations for Quality of training were not different regarding both groups of students.Programa Operacional

Today’s more open and dynamic trends in markets, together with the
development of new technologies and e-business don’t allow companies to
compete on their own, but as a part of the integrated supply chain. Due to this
fact, the capability of the traditional models to face the challenges of the new
economy is endangered.
The aim of this work is to summarise the main factors that lie behind the
development and use of the concept of integrated supply chain management
that turn the supply chain into a major competitive source
