    Evaluation of high-concentrate diets that vary in physically effective neutral detergent fibre for finishing lambs

    The objective of this research was to evaluate lamb diets with a high proportion of concentrate and various levels of physically effective neutral detergent fibre (NDF) using tropical ingredients. Four diets were formulated: D1 with 16.5% physically effective NDF (peNDF), D2 with 21.4% peNDF, D3 with 23.3% peNDF, and D4 with 24.6% peNDF. Twenty male Santa InĂȘs lambs at four months old with an average liveweight (LW) of 18.6 ± 3.4 kg were fed for 49 days. There were no differences (P >0.05) among the diets in dry matter (DM) intake. Crude protein (CP) intake, relative to either LW or metabolic live weight (LW0.75) or LW, was greater (P ≀0.05) for D2 and D3 than for D1 or D4. Lower (P ≀0.05) NDF intake, relative to LW0.75 or LW, was lower for D1 than for the other diets. Selection indexes (SIs) were similar (P >0.05) among diets. Animals that consumed D1 had less (P ≀0.05) rumination time per bolus. Meaningful variations were not observed in performance and efficiency of finishing lambs that were related to differences in peNDF among the diets. Santa InĂȘs lambs were able to adapt to diets with low levels of peNDF by increasing rumination time as a consequence of increased fibre consumption and greater particle size selection

    Ultrasonic vocalizations during male–female interaction in the mouse model of Down syndrome Ts65Dn

    AbstractDown syndrome (DS) is the leading cause of genetically defined intellectual disability. Although speech and language impairments are salient features of this disorder, the nature of these phenotypes and the degree to which they are exacerbated by concomitant oromotor dysfunction and/or hearing deficit are poorly understood. Mouse models like Ts65Dn, the most extensively used DS animal model, have been critical to understanding the genetic and developmental mechanisms that contribute to intellectual disability. In the present study, we characterized the properties of the ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) emitted by Ts65Dn males during courtship episodes with female partners. USVs emitted by mice in this setting have been proposed to have some basic correlation to human speech. Data were collected and analyzed from 22 Ts65Dn mice and 22 of their euploid littermates. We found that both the minimum and maximum peak frequencies of Ts65Dn calls were lower than those produced by euploid mice, whereas the mean individual duration of “down” and “complex” syllable types was significantly longer. Peak, minimal and maximal, and the fundamental frequencies of short syllables generated by Ts65Dn mice were lower compared to those by euploid mice. Finally, Ts65Dn males made fewer multiple jumps calls during courtship and the mean total duration of their “arc”, “u”, and “complex” syllables was longer. We discuss the human correlates to these findings, their translational potential, and the limitations of this approach. To our knowledge, this is the first characterization of differences between adult Ts65Dn and euploid control mice with respect to USVs

    Ti6Al4V-PEEK multi-material structures – design, fabrication and tribological characterization focused on orthopedic implants

SLM and pressure assisted injection techniques were used to obtain Ti6Al4V-PEEK multi-material structures. Aiming to reproduce to some extension the tribological phenomena occurring during and after hip implant insertion, five tribological tests were outlined and performed. The obtained results showed that the presence of PEEK on the Ti6Al4V-PEEK cellular structures led to a substantial improvement on the wear resistance (62% reduction in the mass loss) when compared to the material currently available on market for hip implants.     Inframalleolar Bypass Grafts for Limb Salvage

    AbstractObjectiveTo report our experience of long-term results of inframalleolar bypass.DesignRetrospective analysis.Materials and methodsWe analysed 122 inframalleolar bypasses performed between January 1991 and June 2005 in 116 patients. Most patients were treated for critical ischaemia (97%). The indication for the use of podalic arteries was a lack of tibial arteries with run-off to the foot. The dorsalis pedis was predominantly used for distal anastomoses (62.3%) and the greater saphenous vein (84.4%) as the conduit. The follow-up periods ranged from 1 to 60 months. The endpoints analysed were graft patency, limb salvage, preservation of deambulation and survival rate.ResultsThe cumulative patency was 58.2% at 3 years and 53.4% at 5 years. The best results were achieved with the devalvulated greater saphenous veins. Limb salvage was 70.0% at 3 years and 50.4% at 5 years, with preserved deambulation rates of 57.3% and 47.1%, respectively. There were 36 major and 45 minor amputations. At 3 years, the survival rate was 50.2% and the surgical mortality 13%. Female sex was associated with worse results for cumulative patency and limb salvage (P<0.01).ConclusionsIn the long term, inframalleolar bypass is a satisfactory option for limb salvage

    Nonextensivity in Geological Faults?

    Geological fault systems, as the San Andreas fault (SAF) in USA, constitute typical examples of self-organizing systems in nature. In this paper, we have considered some geophysical properties of the SAF system to test the viability of the nonextensive models for earthquakes developed in [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 73}, 026102, 2006]. To this end, we have used 6188 earthquakes events ranging in the magnitude interval 2<m<82 < m < 8 that were taken from the Network Earthquake International Center catalogs (NEIC, 2004-2006) and the Bulletin of the International Seismological Centre (ISC, 1964-2003). For values of the Tsallis nonextensive parameter q≃1.68q \simeq 1.68, it is shown that the energy distribution function deduced in above reference provides an excellent fit to the NEIC and ISC SAF data.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure, standard LaTeX fil
