N,N '-dimethyl-N,N '-dicyclohexylsuccinamide: A novel molecule for the separation and recovery of Pd(II) by liquid-liquid extraction

N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-dicyclohexylsuccinamide (DMDCHSA) is investigated as a potential molecule for the liquid-liquid extraction of Pd(II) from chloride solutions for the first time. The effect of several parameters on Pd(II) extraction, such as the contact period between both phases, hydrochloric acid, extractant and hydrogen ion concentrations, is evaluated. Pd(II) extraction equilibrium is very fast (30 s) and the extraction percentage (%E) increases with the HCI concentration in the aqueous phases, being higher than 60% for [HCl] > 5 M. The loading capacity of DMDCHSA for Pd(II) is reasonable (molar ratio extractant/metal higher than 16). Several stripping agents (e.g. distilled water, 1 M HCl, seawater and 20 g/L chloride solution as NaCl) were successfully used to transfer Pd(II) to a new aqueous phase, and data obtained from five successive extraction-stripping cycles suggest a good DMDCHSA stability pattern. Attempts to replace 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCE) by commercial and more environmentally friendly diluents showed much worse %E for Pd(II). Selectivity tests with binary, ternary and more complex metal ion solutions were carried out to evaluate the performance of DMDCHSA towards Pd(II) recovery from 6 M HCl, when in presence of Pt(IV), Fe(III), Zn(II), Al(III) and Ce(III), metal ions usually present in solutions that may result from the hydrometallurgical treatment of spent automobile catalytic converters. It was generally observed that the additional metal ions do not affect the recovery of Pd(II) by DMDCHSA, although Fe(III) and Pt(IV) were co-extracted in a great extent. A solvent extraction (SX) scheme is proposed, based on a previous separation of Fe(III) with tributylphosphate (TBP) and on the selective and sequential stripping of Pt(IV) and Pd(II) from the loaded DMDCHSA with 0.01 M thiourea in 0.5 M HCI and seawater, respectively. The dependence of the Pd(II) distribution ratios on DMDCHSA and acidity, complemented with UV-Visible spectroscopy data, points out to DMDCHSA:Pd(II) extracted species with a 2:1 molar ratio and suggests the occurrence of an outer-sphere ion pair reaction, in which both [PdCl4](2-) and HCI are extracted

The research on emotional labor in nursing is already evident, however it is necessary to explain this field of intervention within its specific fields, namely, the pediatrics, which comprises several contexts. The purpose of this scoping review is to identify and systematize the publications availability within electronic research tools, about emotional labor in diverse pediatrics nursing care contexts, their focus, and which theories, models, algorithms and other practice guidelines which explains and sustain the emotional labor in pediatric nursing care. Following the Arksey & O'Malley 44Pensar Enfermagem | Vol. 24 | N.º 2 | 2º Semestre de 2020 (2005) methodology, 29 publications for review were identified, in which the scientific literature predominates (n=19), being the most studied pediatric contexts: pediatric inpatient service, pediatric palliative care and neonatal intensive care. Despite the lack of investigation within this scope, it appears that the emotional labor in pediatric nursing is valued, and its conception converges to a predominance of the focus on intra, inter and extrapersonal emotional labor (an integrative perspective). This review identifies research and development opportunities regarding the emotional labor concept in the pediatrics nursing care contexts, as significant gaps in qualitative and quantitative research were identified, including mixed studies, as well as the emotional labor in nursing conceptual and clinical models development.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Slow pyrolysis of cork granules under nitrogen atmosphere: by-products characterization and their potential valorization

ABSTRACT: Cork granules (Quercus suber L.) were slowly pyrolyzed at temperatures between 400-700 degrees C and under N-2 flow. While preserving its structure, some cells of the cork biochar became interconnected, allowing such carbon residue to be used as templates for manufacturing ceria redox materials. The pyrolytic char morphology was similar to that of the natural precursor. The produced cork biochar belonged to Class 1 (C > 60%) and possessed a high heating value of 32 MJ kg(-1). Other pyrolysis-derived compounds were identified and quantified through GC-FID and GC-MS analyses. The yield of gases released during cork pyrolysis was strongly dependent on the temperature used due to the thermal decomposition reactions involved in the degradation of cork. In particular, rising pyrolysis temperature from 500 to 700 T resulted in reducing the total hydrocarbon gases from 74 to 24 vol%. On the other hand, the yield of H-2 increased from 0 to 58% by increasing the pyrolysis temperature from 400 to 700 T. Due to the presence of suberin in cork, the composition and yield of bio-oil could be regulated by the pyrolysis temperature. Cork bio-oil was found to consist of long-chain hydrocarbons (from C11 to C24). The bio-oil resulting from the slow pyrolysis of cork residues is suitable as an appropriate feedstock for producing aliphatic-rich pyrolytic biofuels or as a source of olefms. Overall, the findings of this study suggest that Quercus suber L. could be a promising feedstock for biochar and biofuel production through the pyrolytic route and could contribute to the environmental and economic sustainability of the cork production industry.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Giving voice to patients: experiences during acute exacerbations of COPD

    Get PDF
Background: Acute exacerbations of COPD (AECOPD) have a negative impact on patients’ health status anddisease progression, regardless of the severity. However, their clinical presentation is heterogenous and still littleunderstood. Improving our understanding of AECOPD, during their occurrence, from patients’ own livedexperience may allow the development of person-centred interventions and enhance recovery. Thus, we aimedto explore patients’ experiences during a mild to moderate AECOPD. Methods: Semi-structured interviews with patients with a mild or moderate AECOPD treated in the communitywere conducted, at their homes, within 48h of the diagnosis. Interviews were audio recorded, transcribed in fulland analysed by deductive thematic analysis using the Web Qualitative Data Analysis software. A preliminaryanalysis focused on the impact of AECOPD was conducted and illustrated with representative quotes. Results: 11 patients (9 male, 67±10y, FEV1 41±16pp) participated. 7 subthemes demonstrating high impact ofAECOPD emerged: symptoms, limitations in activities of daily living, emotional challenges, physiological changes, limitations in recreational and social activities, work and family disturbances (Fig. 1). Conclusion: AECOPD, even when not requiring hospital admission, have a huge impact on patients’ daily lives. This study contributes with a foundation for the development of meaningful person-centred interventions during AECOPD.publishe

Multi-criteria model for classifying clients of companies distributing liquefied petroleum gas

    Get PDF
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is a fossil fuel that has been attracting a lot of attention in national and global markets because of its logistical versatility, its calorific power, and because it emits a low level of pollutants. The history of its exploitation in the sharply competitive Brazilian market has been marked by various crises which made the exploitation of LPG an activity that has been subject to a number of uncertainties. The product is in the production chain of different market segments and is an important component in the national energy matrix. As a result of this, the process of classifying consumers by LPG distributors is a strategic task and subject to a set of criteria that need to be observed. In this context, this article concentrates on multi-criteria modeling in order to resolve the problematic of classifying clients in a LPG distribution company. A model is proposed based on the ELECTRE TRI method and the aim is to allocate the portfolio of clients to a set of ranked classes.

O P-PAL encontra-se disponível em http://p-pal.di.uminho.pt/toolsIn this paper we present the strategies and procedures undertaken in the development of a new measure of lexical frequency of the contemporary European Portuguese – Procura-PALavras (P-PAL). Based on a corpus of over 227 million words, P-PAL offers the default frequency per million words (lemmas and wordforms), and the computation of several other objective (lexical and sublexical) and subjective word metrics. We also describe lexical entry integration and word frequency extraction. The high number of indices and lexical entries makes P-PAL an advanced and indispensable web application for the promotion and internationalization of Portuguese research.
