    Suspicion in Phishing and Organization Risk

    Phishing emails are communications that are sent out in mass and are designed with the goal of obtaining sensitive information, installing malware on a user\u27s machine, or gaining access to a network. Training users about the dangers of phishing emails is common in organizations, but users will still frequently fall victim to phishing attacks. Organizations may feel that they are doing the necessary actions, such as providing user security training, to mitigate the risk of users\u27 lack of secure behavior. Organizations are faced with the challenge of the human element; the most undependable and uncontrollable part of an information system. As time has progressed, corporations are beginning to understand that they must put measures and controls into their security IT to mitigate the possible problems that arise from human interaction with IT. This research attempts to explore suspicion as it relates to emails and how-to better train individuals to recognize illegitimate emails

    TeraHz tuning of whispering gallery modes in a PDMS, stand-alone, stretchable microsphere

    We report on tuning the optical whispering gallery modes in a poly dimethyl siloxane-based (PDMS) microsphere resonator by more than a THz. The PDMS microsphere system consists of a solid spherical resonator directly formed with double stems on either side. The stems act like tie-rods for simple mechanical stretching of the microresonator over tens of microns, resulting in tuning of the whispering gallery modes by one free spectral range. Further investigations demonstrate that the whispering gallery mode shift has a higher sensitivity (0.13 nm/{\mu}N) to an applied force when the resonator is in its maximally stretched state compared to its relaxed state.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Optics Letter

    Assessment of isoprene and near-surface ozone sensitivities to water stress over the Euro-Mediterranean region

    Plants emit biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) in response to changes in environmental conditions (e.g. temperature, radiation, soil moisture). In the large family of BVOCs, isoprene is by far the strongest emitted compound and plays an important role in ozone chemistry, thus affecting both air quality and climate. In turn, climate change may alter isoprene emissions by increasing temperature as well as the occurrence and intensity of severe water stresses that alter plant functioning. The Model of Emissions of Gases and Aerosols from Nature (MEGAN) provides different parameterizations to account for the impact of water stress on isoprene emissions, which essentially reduces emissions in response to the effect of soil moisture deficit on plant productivity. By applying the regional climate–chemistry model RegCM4chem coupled to the Community Land Model CLM4.5 and MEGAN2.1, we thus performed sensitivity simulations to assess the effects of water stress on isoprene emissions and near-surface ozone levels over the Euro-Mediterranean region and across the drier and wetter summers over the 1992–2016 period using two different parameterizations of the impact of water stress implemented in the MEGAN model. Over the Euro-Mediterranean region and across the simulated summers, water stress reduces isoprene emissions on average by nearly 6 %. However, during the warmest and driest selected summers (e.g. 2003, 2010, 2015) and over large isoprene-source areas (e.g. the Balkans), decreases in isoprene emissions range from −20 % to −60 % and co-occur with negative anomalies in precipitation, soil moisture and plant productivity. Sustained decreases in isoprene emissions also occur after prolonged or repeated dry anomalies, as observed for the summers of 2010 and 2012. Although the decrease in isoprene emissions due to water stress may be important, it only reduces near-surface ozone levels by a few percent due to a dominant VOC-limited regime over southern Europe and the Mediterranean Basin. Overall, over the selected analysis region, compared to the old MEGAN parameterization, the new one leads to localized and 25 %–50 % smaller decreases in isoprene emissions and 3 %–8 % smaller reductions in near-surface ozone levels.</p

    An NF-ÎșB - EphrinA5-Dependent Communication between NG2+ Interstitial Cells and Myoblasts Promotes Muscle Growth in Neonates

    SummarySkeletal muscle growth immediately following birth is critical for proper body posture and locomotion. However, compared with embryogenesis and adulthood, the processes regulating the maturation of neonatal muscles is considerably less clear. Studies in the 1960s predicted that neonatal muscle growth results from nuclear accretion of myoblasts preferentially at the tips of myofibers. Remarkably, little information has been added since then to resolve how myoblasts migrate to the ends of fibers. Here, we provide insight into this process by revealing a unique NF-ÎșB-dependent communication between NG2+ interstitial cells and myoblasts. NF-ÎșB in NG2+ cells promotes myoblast migration to the tips of myofibers through cell-cell contact. This occurs through expression of ephrinA5 from NG2+ cells, which we further deduce is an NF-ÎșB target gene. Together, these results suggest that NF-ÎșB plays an important role in the development of newborn muscles to ensure proper myoblast migration for fiber growth

    POGZ Is Required for Silencing Mouse Embryonic ÎČ-like Hemoglobin and Human Fetal Hemoglobin Expression

Strategies to derepress fetal globin expression in the adult could alleviate symptoms in sickle cell disease and ÎČ-thalassemia. We identified a zinc-finger protein, pogo transposable element with zinc-finger domain (POGZ), expressed in hematopoietic progenitor cells. Targeted deletion of Pogz in adult hematopoietic cells in vivo results in persistence of embryonic ÎČ-like globin expression without affecting erythroid development. POGZ binds to the Bcl11a promoter and erythroid-specific intragenic regulatory regions. Pogz+/- mice show elevated embryonic ÎČ-like globin expression, suggesting that partial reduction of Pogz expression results in persistence of embryonic ÎČ-like globin expression. Knockdown of POGZ in primary human CD34+ progenitor cell-derived erythroblasts reduces BCL11A expression, a known repressor of embryonic ÎČ-like globin expression, and increases fetal hemoglobin expression.     i-Rheo: Measuring the materials' linear viscoelastic properties “in a step”!

    A new analytical technique for determining a materials' linear viscoelastic properties from a simple step-strain measurement is reported. The technique avoids the need for idealisation of real measurements. The technique involves evaluating the Fourier transforms of raw experimental data describing both the time-dependent stress and strain functions. A comparison with conventional linear oscillatory measurements for a diverse range of complex materials is made and the technique is shown to be superior to existing linear oscillatory measurements in all cases

    Global exposure of population and land‐use to meteorological droughts under different warming levels and SSPs: a CORDEX‐based study

    Global warming is likely to cause a progressive drought increase in some regions, but how population and natural resources will be affected is still underexplored. This study focuses on global population, forests, croplands and pastures exposure to meteorological drought hazard in the 21st century, expressed as frequency and severity of drought events. As input, we use a large ensemble of climate simulations from the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX), population projections from the NASA-SEDAC dataset and land-use projections from the Land-Use Harmonization 2 project for 1981–2100. The exposure to drought hazard is presented for five Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP1-SSP5) at four Global Warming Levels (GWLs: 1.5°C to 4°C). Results show that considering only Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI; based on precipitation), the SSP3 at GWL4 projects the largest fraction of the global population (14%) to experience an increase in drought frequency and severity (versus 1981–2010), with this value increasing to 60% if temperature is considered (indirectly included in the Standardized Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index, SPEI). With SPEI, considering the highest GWL for each SSP, 8 (for SSP2, SSP4, SSP5) and 11 (SSP3) billion people, that is, more than 90%, will be affected by at least one unprecedented drought. For SSP5 at GWL4, approximately 2 × 106^{6} km2^{2} of forests and croplands (respectively, 6% and 11%) and 1.5 × 106^{6} km2^{2} of pastures (19%) will be exposed to increased drought frequency and severity according to SPI, but for SPEI this extent will rise to 17 × 106^{6} km2^{2} of forests (49%), 6 × 106^{6} km2^{2} of pastures (78%) and 12 × 106^{6} km2^{2} of croplands (67%), being mid-latitudes the most affected. The projected likely increase of drought frequency and severity significantly increases population and land-use exposure to drought, even at low GWLs, thus extensive mitigation and adaptation efforts are needed to avoid the most severe impacts of climate change

    Genome-wide association and Mendelian randomisation analysis provide insights into the pathogenesis of heart failure

    Heart failure (HF) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. A small proportion of HF cases are attributable to monogenic cardiomyopathies and existing genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have yielded only limited insights, leaving the observed heritability of HF largely unexplained. We report results from a GWAS meta-analysis of HF comprising 47,309 cases and 930,014 controls. Twelve independent variants at 11 genomic loci are associated with HF, all of which demonstrate one or more associations with coronary artery disease (CAD), atrial fibrillation, or reduced left ventricular function, suggesting shared genetic aetiology. Functional analysis of non-CAD-associated loci implicate genes involved in cardiac development (MYOZ1, SYNPO2L), protein homoeostasis (BAG3), and cellular senescence (CDKN1A). Mendelian randomisation analysis supports causal roles for several HF risk factors, and demonstrates CAD-independent effects for atrial fibrillation, body mass index, and hypertension. These findings extend our knowledge of the pathways underlying HF and may inform new therapeutic strategies
