    Se presenta un caso de quiste óseo aneurismático de localización superficial en la cara externa del húmero. El tumor fue tratado mediante la resección en bloque y relleno con hueso liofilizado. La evolución ha sido satisfactoria no habiéndose presentado recurrencia del tumor y considerándose el enfermo completamente curado a los tres años de realizado el tratamiento. Se establece una relación próxima en el tiempo con un episodio traumático, que se considera desencadenante del desarrollo tumoral y de la sintomatología.A case of aneurysmal bone cyst located at the lateral periosteal surface of the humeral diaphysis is presented. The patient was treated by in-bloc tumor resection and grafting of liophylized bone. The outcome has been satisfactory without tumor recurrence. Three years after surgery the patients remains free from disease. A relationship between previous trauma and the development of tumor could be found

    Synthesis of fluorescent dendrimeric antigen efficiently internalized by human dendritic cells

    A new fluorescent dendrimeric antigen (DeAn) based on a dendron with amoxicilloyl terminal groups has been synthetized. The synthesis implies a novel class of all-aliphatic polyamide dendrimer (BisAminoalkylPolyAmide Dendrimers, or BAPAD).[1] The introduction of a cystamine core allows the incorporation of this dendrons into a 1,8-naphthalimide fluorofore functionalized with a maleimide group. The fluorescence properties of this DeAn has been studied and compared with the properties of an equivalent dendron possessing amino-terminal groups. This DeAn has been used as a synthetic antigen in a biomedical assay that tests the amoxicillin sensitivity of dendritic cells (DC) from tolerant and allergic patients.Universidad de Málaga.     Fractura bipolar de clavícula

    Se presenta un caso de fractura que afecta a ambos extremos de la clavícula. Fractura tipo II de Neer del fragmento distal y fractura del extremo esternal de la clavícula. Se realizó tratamiento quirúrgico mediante reducción abierta y osteosíntesis con agujas de Kirschner en ambas. El resultado a largo plazo ha sido satisfactorio cosmética y funcionalmente.A case of bipolar fracture affecting both ends of the clavicle is reported. The lesion consisted of a Neer type II fracture at the distal segment and a fracture close to the proximal joint with the sternum. Surgical treatment was carried out by open reduction and Kirschner wire fixation stabilizing both sides. At follow up, clinical and cosmetic results are satisfactories

    Computer labs on virtual environments: A flexible, portable and multidisciplinary model

    Teaching of computer-aided practical subjects in engineering education creates new challenges. Computers have to be configured to support particular requirements of each subject. Virtual Environments allows the building of a Virtual Machine (VM) tailored to requirements of each subject, allowing flexible, versatile and low cost laboratories. However, the use of multiple VM at a shared computing facility creates new problems, both technical and related to the performance of the class sessions. To solve these challenges, we have developed the Virtual Machine on-Demand (VMoD) tool. It automates the adaptation of each VM to the environment in which it is deployed and simplifies its use to students. As a result, the creation of computer-aided engineering laboratories on a shared computing facility using VM is possible and profitable

    Resultados del tratamiento quirúrgico del dolor lumbar con instrumentación diapasón

    Se presenta un estudio sobre 23 pacientes con patología lumbosacra tratados quirúrgicamente mediante artrodesis e instrumentación vertebral transpedicular tipo diapasón. El promedio de seguimiento ha sido de 25 meses (18-38). El dolor lumbar estaba relacionado en 10 casos con estenosis de canal, en 6 con espondilolistesis y en 7 con hernia discal y artrosis secundaria. Todos fueron instrumentados por vía posterior mediante fijación transpedicular y artrodesados posterolateralmente con injerto autólogo. Se consiguió una artrodesis sólida en un 96%. No se han presentado complicaciones preoperatorias. Ocho pacientes presentaron complicaciones en el postoperatorio inmediato. Observamos un desplazamiento de barra y un desanclaje del tornillo fuera del pedículo. Siguiendo los criterios de valoración de Henderson se ha conseguido un 96% de excelentes y buenos resultados.A series of 23 patient with lumbosacral pathology, surgically treated by posterior arthrodesis and vertebral diapason transpedicular fixation was retrospectively review. The average follow-up period was 25 months (18-38). The diagnosis was spinal stenosis in 10 cases, spondylolisthesis in 6, and disc herniation with secondary osteoartrhitis in 7 cases. Apart from transpedicular fixation all cases underwent posterolateral fusion with autogenous bone graft. A solid arthrodesis was achieved in a 96% of patients. There were no per-operative complication. Eight cases showed complications in the immediate postoperative period. We observed displacement of a bar and detachement of a screw out off the pedicle. According to Henderson's assessment criteria we obtained 96% of excellent and good results

    Responses to Increased Salinity and Severe Drought in the Eastern Iberian Endemic Species Thalictrum maritimum (Ranunculaceae), Threatened by Climate Change

    [EN] Thalictrum maritimum is an endangered, endemic species in East Spain, growing in areas of relatively low salinity in littoral salt marshes. A regression of its populations and the number of individuals has been registered in the last decade. This study aimed at establishing the causes of this reduction using a multidisciplinary approach, including climatic, ecological, physiological and biochemical analyses. The climatic data indicated that there was a direct negative correlation between increased drought, especially during autumn, and the number of individuals censused in the area of study. The susceptibility of this species to water deficit was confirmed by the analysis of growth parameters upon a water deficit treatment applied under controlled greenhouse conditions, with the plants withstanding only 23 days of complete absence of irrigation. On the other hand, increased salinity does not seem to be a risk factor for this species, which behaves as a halophyte, tolerating in controlled treatments salinities much higher than those registered in its natural habitat. The most relevant mechanisms of salt tolerance in T. maritimum appear to be based on the control of ion transport, by (i) the active transport of toxic ions to the aerial parts of the plants at high external salinity¿where they are presumably stored in the leaf vacuoles to avoid their deleterious effects in the cytosol, (ii) the maintenance of K+ concentrations in belowground and aboveground organs, despite the increase of Na+ levels, and (iii) the salt-induced accumulation of Ca2+, particularly in stems and leaves.     Multidisciplinary studies supporting conservation programmes of two rare, endangered Limonium species from Spain

    [EN] Background and aims Two local threatened endemics from Valencian salt marshes were analysed from a multidisciplinary perspective combining field studies with experiments performed under greenhouse-controlled conditions. The work aimed to investigate the habitat of the two species but also to explore their limits of tolerance to severe drought and salinity and the mechanisms behind their stress responses. Methods The number of individuals in several populations, climatic conditions, soil characteristics and accompanying vegetation in the natural habitats were analysed in the field study. Plants obtained by seed germination were grown in the greenhouse and subjected to one month of water and salt stress treatments. Growth and biochemical parameters were analysed after the treatments were finalised. Results No correlation between climatic parameters and the number of individuals censed of the two Limonium species could be established. Although L. dufourii was found in more saline soils in the natural habitats, under controlled greenhouse conditions, this species was more severely affected by salt treatment than L. albuferae, which is more susceptible to water stress. A common biochemical response was the increase of proline under all stress treatments, but mostly in water-stressed plants. Oxidative stress markers, MDA and H2O2, did not indicate significant differences between the treatments. The differences in the two species¿ responses to the two kinds of stress were correlated with the activation of the antioxidant enzymes, more pronounced in conditions of salt stress in L. albuferae and of water stress in L. dufourii. Conclusions Although L. albuferae is found in sites with lower salinity in the natural habitats, the greenhouse experiment indicated that it tolerates higher concentrations of salt than L. dufouri, which is more resistant to drought. The two species efficiently mitigate oxidative stress by activation of antioxidant enzymes. The results obtained may be helpful for the conservation management of the two species: whereas salinity is not problematic, as the two species tolerated under controlled conditions salinities far beyond those in their natural environments, water scarcity may be a problem for L. albuferae, which proved to be more susceptible to water deficit.This research was supported by the project AICO/2017/039 from Generalitat Valenciana.     Consumption of caffeinated beverages and kidney function decline in an elderly Mediterranean population with metabolic syndrome

    It remains unclear whether caffeinated beverages could have deleterious renal effects in elderly population with underlying comorbid conditions. We investigated the associations between coffee, tea, or caffeine intake and 1-year changes in glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in a large Spanish cohort of overweight/obese elderly with metabolic syndrome (MetS). This prospective analysis includes 5851 overweight/obese adults (55-75 years) with MetS from the PREDIMED-Plus study. We assessed coffee, tea, and caffeine consumption from a validated food-frequency questionnaire and creatinine-based eGFR using the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration equation. Multivariate-adjusted regression models were applied to test associations between baseline coffee, tea, or caffeine intake and 1-year eGFR changes. Caffeinated coffee (> 2 cups/day) and tea (at least 1 cup/day) drinkers had 0.88 and 0.93 mL/min/1.73 m2 greater eGFR decrease respectively, compared to those with less than 1 cup/day of coffee consumption or non-tea drinkers. Furthermore, caffeinated coffee consumption of > 2 cups/day was associated with 1.19-fold increased risk of rapid eGFR decline > 3 mL/min/1.73 m2 (95% CI 1.01-1.41). Similarly, individuals in the highest (median, 51.2 mg/day) tertile of caffeine intake had a 0.87 mL/min/1.73 m2 greater eGFR decrease. Decaffeinated coffee was not associated with eGFR changes. In conclusion, higher consumption of caffeinated coffee, tea, and caffeine was associated with a greater 1-year eGFR decline in overweight/obese adults with MetS
