    Method for machining holes in composite materials

    A method for boring well defined holes in a composite material such as graphite/epoxy is discussed. A slurry of silicon carbide powder and water is projected onto a work area of the composite material in which a hole is to be bored with a conventional drill bit. The silicon carbide powder and water slurry allow the drill bit, while experiencing only normal wear, to bore smooth, cylindrical holes in the composite material

    Effects of seawater and deionized water at 0 to 80 deg C on the flexural properties of a glass/epoxy composite

    The effect on the flexural properties of a glass/epoxy composite of immersion in deionized water or seawater at 0, 25, and 80 C for 451 hr was examined. The percent weight gain at 0 and 25 C was low (0.06 to 0.17 percent) and there was no significant change in the flexural properties for these environmental conditions. At 80 C there was a decrease in the flexural strength of 17 and 20 percent in seawater and deionized water, respectively. This is a comparison to control samples exposed to 80 C heat alone. These decreases were found to be nearly reversible once the samples were dried. Optical microscopy did not reveal cracking of the matrix. The flexural modulus was essentially unaffected by exposure to deionized water and seawater at 80 C

    Fracture mechanics life analytical methods verification testing

    The objective was to evaluate NASCRAC (trademark) version 2.0, a second generation fracture analysis code, for verification and validity. NASCRAC was evaluated using a combination of comparisons to the literature, closed-form solutions, numerical analyses, and tests. Several limitations and minor errors were detected. Additionally, a number of major flaws were discovered. These major flaws were generally due to application of a specific method or theory, not due to programming logic. Results are presented for the following program capabilities: K versus a, J versus a, crack opening area, life calculation due to fatigue crack growth, tolerable crack size, proof test logic, tearing instability, creep crack growth, crack transitioning, crack retardation due to overloads, and elastic-plastic stress redistribution. It is concluded that the code is an acceptable fracture tool for K solutions of simplified geometries, for a limited number of J and crack opening area solutions, and for fatigue crack propagation with the Paris equation and constant amplitude loads when the Paris equation is applicable

    Organization theory and military metaphor: time for a reappraisal?

    A ‘conventional’ use of military metaphor would use it to convey attributes such as hierarchical organization, vertical communication and limited autonomy. This is often used in contrast to a looser form of organization based on the metaphor of the network. However, this article argues that military practice is more complex, with examples of considerable autonomy within the constraints of central direction. It is suggested that not only might this be a more useful metaphor for many contemporary organizations, but also that simplistic uses of military metaphor divert our attention away from the functions that management hierarchies play. The discussion is embedded within a critical realist account of metaphor, arguing for both its value and the need for its further development

    How dynamic capabilities drive performance in the Indian IT industry : the role of information and co-ordination

    This study examines key issues and effects of capability management on a fast-growing area of knowledge-intensive global business services &ndash; IT outsourcing and offshoring. An exploratory study is undertaken of Indian companies providing complex process-oriented offshore IT services to their global customers. The analysis of the data related to the service provider side shows that developing dynamic capabilities is strongly driven by management and top-clients and results in the development of business processes and in establishing a strategic partnership with the client organization. Key findings are that information exchange and coordination are the key to a leveraging firm performance.<br /

    Heterogeneity of O6-alkylguanine DNA-alkyltransferase expression in human breast tumours

    An important determinant of cellular resistance to chemotherapeutic O6-alkylating agents, which comprise methylating and chloroethylating agents, is the ability of cells to repair alkylation damage at the O6-position of guanine in DNA. This is achieved by a specific DNA repair enzyme O6-alkylguanine DNA-alkyltransferase. In this study O6-alkylguanine DNA-alkyltransferase expression was measured in human breast tumours using both biochemical and immunohistochemical techniques. O6-alkylguanine DNA-alkyltransferase activity was then compared with known clinical prognostic indices to assess the potential role of O6-alkylguanine DNA-alkyltransferase in predicting the behaviour of this common malignancy. The application of both biochemical and immunohistochemical techniques was feasible and practical. Most breast tumours expressed high levels of O6-alkylguanine DNA-alkyltransferase. Immunohistochemical analysis showed marked variation in expression not only between individuals but also within individual tumours, and in the same patient, between metastases and between primary tumour and metastatic site. O6-alkylguanine DNA-alkyltransferase activity in tissue extracts significantly correlated not only with immunohistochemical staining intensity determined by subjective quantitation, but also with measures of protein levels using a computerised image analysis system including mean grey (P<0.001), percentage of cells positive for O6-alkylguanine DNA-alkyltransferase (P<0.001), and integrated optical density (P<0.001). O6-alkylguanine DNA-alkyltransferase expression did not correlate with any of the established clinical prognostic indicators for current treatment regimens. However, immunohistochemical offers a rapid and convenient method for assessing potential utility of O6-alkylating agents or O6-alkylguanine DNA-alkyltransferase inactivating agents in future studies of breast cancer treatment

    Effect of particle size, coupling agent and DDGS additions on Paulownia wood polypropylene composites

    Studies aimed at improving the tensile, flexural, impact, thermal, and physical characteristics of wood–plastic composites composed of Paulownia wood flour derived from 36-month-old trees blended with polypropylene were conducted. Composites of 25% and 40% w/w of Paulownia wood were produced by twin-screw compounding and injection molding. Composites containing 0–10% by weight of maleated polypropylene were evaluated and an optimum maleated polypropylene concentration determined, i.e., 5%. The particle size distribution of Paulownia wood filler is shown to have an effect on the tensile and flexural properties of the composites. Novel combination composites of dried distiller’s grain with solubles mixed with Paulownia wood (up to 40% w/w) were produced and their properties evaluated. Depending on the composite tested, soaking composites for 872 h alters mechanical properties and causes weight gain
